Jessica Chambers | 60 comments I'm living in a very conservative area of Tennessee and have limited funds, so I try to get everything from thrift stores and libraries. However, I'm running out of options lol...anybody consider a book swap? I've got quite a few of the books on the list. Let me know if anyone is interested!

message 2: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Chambers | 60 comments nope thanks for the tip!

message 3: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Chambers | 60 comments Would still like to know if anyone here would swap, since I'm only looking for 1001 books. Thanks.

message 4: by Kristel (new)

Kristel (kristelh) It is hard to find books on the list at Paperbackswap and Bookmooch. I've been trying and it is a struggle. My best luck is the library. The older books can be obtained for free on line either as an e book or audio. I've done both. It would be nice to make exchanges when a book is hard to find.

message 5: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Chambers | 60 comments Well, I figured maybe we could all list what we're looking for and what we've got, and then message each other about what we're interested in...maybe work something out with postage costs if we didn't have equal amounts to swap...

Well, I can't find "Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit" and "Blood and Guts in High School", which I'm totally interested in reading. It's gotten to where I'm bogged down with stuff like "Tristram Shandy" because it's all I can get, and while I don't mind reading it, I'd like to intersperse stuff like this with more entertaining reads, frankly...I'd be willing to swap my copy of "A Suitable Boy"
"The Catcher in the Rye" "Cat's Eye" and "The Poisonwood Bible", and I know I've got others that aren't popping into my head right now.

message 7: by Janet (new)

Janet | 25 comments I use bookmooch.com and the public library system. With bookmooch, the book owner pays the shipping. Media rate is $2.38 for up to 1 lb. That covers all but the chunkiest book. If you set it up, I would suggest that the person who wants the book pay the shipping. Then, of course, it would cost an additional $.44 to send the money. So you're up to almost $3 for a book under 1 lb.

Isn't there a goodreads swap system in place? I'm rather new.

I follow our local book sales also...another good resource.

message 8: by jb (new)

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) Unfortunately I do not have many of the books to be able to do a bookswap. My 1001 have been limited so far and most of the classics I have I got from BN for free.

message 9: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Chambers | 60 comments Well, I guess I'll keep trying bookmooch, but if anyone happens across this thread and wants to swap, please message me! Thanks!

There is a Goodreads Book Swap. I believe it would be slightly more money than other services, as Goodreads adds a tiny bit to the actual postage costs (to go towards supporting goodreads) and (I think) it is only available to people in the US.

message 11: by jb (new)

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) Jessica - You should just list some of the books you are looking for so we can keep an eye out.

Could be, I try but between the two book trading sites, I have only gotten a few. I find more at Goodwill which costs about 1 to 2 dollars.

message 13: by Elise (new)

Elise (elise327) I have a bunch of 1,001 books that I haven't added to my BookMooch account because I'm feeling lazy, but if you add me as a friend on BookMooch, I think I can list books as "friends only" or offer them to you guys first. My username is elise327 (I think).

message 14: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments Elise, I looked at the bookmooch site; but I do not see how to set up to have bookmooch "friends". Have you done this before?

I have had much better luck finding 1001 list books on paperbackswap than I have bookmooch! Strange to read that others have had the opposite experience!

I'd be interested in swapping books from the list if I could get copies of the ones I've been looking for for a long time. I keep them after I read them, but I'd be willing to sacrifice some for some specific titles I've wanted. I own about 300 of them.

Does anyone have a copy of "Justine" by Durrell? Or, better still, the trilogy of which "Justine" is a part? That is just one of the many I've never been able to find...

message 15: by Elise (new)

Elise (elise327) Judith, you can do it from the member's profile page--it has a link on the righthand side of the page saying "Add to friends."

message 16: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Chambers | 60 comments jennbunny wrote: "Jessica - You should just list some of the books you are looking for so we can keep an eye out."

Good idea. Right now I am looking for "Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit" and "Blood and Guts in High School".

message 17: by Elise (new)

Elise (elise327) Amanda wrote: "Elise- I added you!"

I am reserving so many books for you, Amanda! About ten.

message 18: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments Elise - I'd like a couple of your books on bookmooch, but, alas, I have no points at present. Thanks so much for befriending me though, and I'll keep checking your inventory when I do earn a point. Meanwhile, if you want to list what you are looking for, I'll see if I have it and can post it there for you.

message 19: by Elise (new)

Elise (elise327) Judith, I still have about 700 books to get through, so maybe it would be easier if you tell me what you have, and also what you've got your eye on in my inventory, so I can hang onto it for you.

So far, 9 list books are going begging, kids! I'll post the list of what I have tomorrow, so you can decide if it's worth it to friend me on BookMooch.

message 20: by jb (new)

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) I have never heard of bookmooch. I will have to check it out.

Justine is the first book in the Alexandria Quartet, the other 3 books are Balthazar, Mount Olive and Clea. Should be able to get it on amazon with all four books in one novel.

I'm interested in "Foundation", "How Late It Was, How Late" and "Talk of the Town"

I looked through you wishlist on bookmooch and I see you want a copy of James' "The Ambassadors". I'll reserve that one for you if you want it. The book is in good shape.

message 25: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments Thanks for the leads, Liz and Deanne!

message 26: by Elise (new)

Elise (elise327) Judith, that sounds great. Did you enjoy "The Ambassadors"?

message 27: by Anthony (new)

Anthony DeCastro | 168 comments I have the following that I would be willing to swap:

Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger
Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer
Wise Blood by Flannery O'Connor

I think this is a great idea. Also, if any group member have a Nook, I'd be interested in swapping e-books with it. Unfortunately, I currently only have a couple of the free e-books from the list, but that should be changing soon.

message 28: by Kristel (last edited Aug 08, 2010 05:44PM) (new)

Kristel (kristelh) my bookmooch id is kristelh. I haven't posted very many 1001 but would be willing to use bookmooch as a means of trading with others for books from the lists. I have Crime and Punishment and Howard's End for sure that I can exchange and I have others as well. This is a great idea.

I have a nook, so will keep that in mind as well. i also don't have much on it yet.

message 29: by Susan (last edited Aug 08, 2010 05:51PM) (new)

Susan | 17 comments Ok swapping is a good idea, but I'll tell you how I've been getting my 1001 books. I belong to my link text so I've participated in book rings/rays. Where you get a list of people who want to read the book and then you mail them out. Like I just finished The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood, to which I will be mailing it out to the next participant. You may want to do the same here a 1001 books to read before you die book ring/ray. Either the last participant doing what they want with the book or the book coming back to you. Something to think about.

message 30: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments I'm Judith (USA: AZ) on bookmooch. Anyone with 1001 books to trade is welcome to "befriend" me also!

Thanks!

message 31: by Anthony (new)

Anthony DeCastro | 168 comments If anyone is interested in the books I've listed above, you can just PM me here on GoodReads.

message 32: by Elise (new)

Elise (elise327) Judith wrote: "I'm Judith (USA: AZ) on bookmooch. Anyone with 1001 books to trade is welcome to "befriend" me also!

Actually, it's surprisingly hard to find people that way! If people search for jloucks they'll have better luck... (I learned this the hard way when I was trying to find/friend my aunt.)

message 33: by Anthony (new)

Anthony DeCastro | 168 comments Ok I joined BookMooch. Username: tonyd31 or Tony D (USA:SC). You can friend me. I'm not sure how this helps with our group as the books I've listed already have 50 or so bookmooch members wishing for them, and I assume the next on the list will have first dibs on my books. Unless, it works differently than paperbackswap.com.

message 34: by Elise (new)

Elise (elise327) Tony wrote: "Ok I joined BookMooch. Username: tonyd31 or Tony D (USA:SC). You can friend me. I'm not sure how this helps with our group as the books I've listed already have 50 or so bookmooch members wishin..."

It does—everyone who has that book on their wishlist will get an email, and the first to respond has "dibs." However, you can reserve books for your friends (the timing is screwy—the wishlisters will still get an email, only to find a "Sorry, this book is reserved for someone else" message when they try to mooch).

message 35: by Kristel (new)

Kristel (kristelh) Elise said that we can set aside books for specific people. I am not sure how this works but bookmooch does allow the member to select who to mooch from and you do have a lot more control that paperbackswap. Tony, if you haven't given your Everything is illuminated book, I would mooch that. i will check.

message 36: by Anthony (new)

Anthony DeCastro | 168 comments Kristel

I will reserve Everything is Illuminated for friends only...and you should be able to mooch it (I think).

message 37: by Anthony (new)

Anthony DeCastro | 168 comments Ok, I'm sending you (Kristel) Wise Blood and Everything is Illuminated.

message 38: by Kristel (new)

Kristel (kristelh) Tony wrote: "Ok, I'm sending you (Kristel) Wise Blood and Everything is Illuminated." Thanks Tony, are there any particular books you are looking for?

message 39: by Kristel (new)

Kristel (kristelh) I am going to try to indicate which books I own on my shelf. If anyone sees something there they can check with me. I sometimes get kind of attached to some books, and also save some for my grandchildren but it never hurts to ask.

message 40: by Anthony (new)

Anthony DeCastro | 168 comments I think we can all relate to being attached to books. There are some books that I love so much that I just can't let go, and others that I received as a gift which I have a hard time letting go of as well.

message 41: by Anthony (new)

Anthony DeCastro | 168 comments Ok, I posted 5 books (4 list books) on bookmooch yesterday and they're all gone. It will probably be a week or so 'til I'm ready to do ship out again, but I'll be posting at least 3 more list books, if any of these interest you let me know and when I post I'll reserve for you and let you know when they are posted.

July's People by Nadine Gordimer
The Plot Against America by Philip Roth (this has been dropped from the current list)
The Human Stain by Philip Roth

message 42: by Elise (new)

Elise (elise327) I wouldn't mind "July's People"...

message 43: by Anthony (new)

Anthony DeCastro | 168 comments I'll reserve it for you

message 44: by April (new)

April I have a nook with several of the list books on it and I can't possibly read more than one at a time. Post a list of what you are looking for and I'll see if I have one. Maybe I can lend them to you. I think it's only lend-able for two weeks, though, so you would want to make sure you can read it in that amount of time.

message 45: by jb (new)

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) April wrote: "I have a nook with several of the list books on it and I can't possibly read more than one at a time. Post a list of what you are looking for and I'll see if I have one. Maybe I can lend them to ..."

That is a fantastic idea April!

message 46: by Anthony (new)

Anthony DeCastro | 168 comments April,

I just started reading a list book, so I wouldn't want a ebook loaner until I've finished it, but in general I'm up for just about any list book that I haven't read. Though, I am probably most interested in "Remains of the Day."

message 47: by Leslie T. (new)

Leslie T. (lat0403) | 12 comments I just joined. My username there is lat0403. I'm at work so I can't really add any books until I get home, but I've got a few on the list. Probably the books that most people have already read, though.

message 48: by April (new)

April I don't have Remains of the Day. I have a bookshelf titled nook books if you want to see the ones I do have on my nook. I plan on going through and starting a bookshelf for lend-able books but I haven't had a chance. Probably tonight. Not all of the ones I have are lend-able.

message 49: by Mystique (new)

Mystique (slickitty) | 8 comments I'm a bookswapper. If you look under Explore and Swap, you'll find lots of people swapping books.

I've got 16 up for swap now. I don't know if any of them are on the 1001 List, but you're welcome to look! I know many of the ones on my wishlist are from the 1001 List.

message 50: by Leslie T. (new)

Leslie T. (lat0403) | 12 comments I think the only book I've got to list tonight that's on the list is Saturday by Ian McEwan. Does anyone here want it before I list it?
