scherzo♫ (pjreads) It's easier to type the GR Author name into the spreadsheet if I can see it on the screen or in a copy of the Completed Tasks thread page.

When my computer or the GR site is in a user-unfriendly mode that doesn't like a lot of clicking to other pages, I type the names then check later.

Donna Jo Atwood | 2412 comments I don't mind linking books and authors or even book covers, but I sometimes read editions of older books that I can't find in GR--and no ISBNs to track them down so I just list Title, authors, pub date, and number of pages. I would hate for those books to not count because there is no link.

It seems to me you could link to the edition on here, and put a note on your post saying that the edition you read was not available on GR.

message 254: by El (new)

El Donna Jo, I've found some things on Amazon that aren't on Goodreads. I'm sure they would accept a link to the Amazon page - a little extra work for you though. And I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule - my personal beef is just when there are no links, period. No explanation either.

message 255: by Megan (new)

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments I can understand disliking no links, but what if the book is out of print? For the winter challenge I read one of my great-grandmother's books, which hasn't been in print for quite some time. It don't know how often something like that will come up, but it would be a shame if out-of-print books with no GR or Amazon entries to be excluded outright.

message 256: by El (last edited Aug 06, 2010 08:53AM) (new)

El I said there'd probably be exceptions. But it would require someone explaining in their post, "Hey, this is out-of-print, there isn't a link for this one." That's just common courtesy, and personally I think that's what the link issue really comes down to - common courtesy both to the moderator and other participants who are looking for interesting new books to read. If there's no link available, a simple explanation as to why would probably be sufficient. What I would like to see avoided is people not linking just because they plain don't want to or don't care to learn how.

A brief note stating that fact should suffice. There are always exceptions to every rule.

message 258: by scherzo♫ (new)

scherzo♫ (pjreads) I'd prefer to keep the current rule: either a link OR both title & author

Links are easier for the moderators and should be encouraged, but not required.

message 259: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments if a book is out of print, you can also contact a GR Librarian (i'm in) or apply to be one (you have to have at least 50 books on your shelves) and then you can add books...you can also edit metadata on books if its wrong, add covers and the like

PJ, I give you a "totally agree" on this:)

message 261: by Ashley FL (new)

Ashley FL | 721 comments This has nothing to do with the rules or anything, but I will say that I personally appreciate it when people list both title and author, and link to the title. I get so many book ideas from the completed tasks thread, and it helps me out! So, for those of you who do that, THANK YOU :)

Erin (NY) (erin_p) | 653 comments I completely agree with El, I think it is common courtesy to the moderators to make their job as easy as possible. They are doing so much for us as is, why not make their job a bit easier?

That's what I usually do. I only link to the author if I'm claiming a Goodreads Author ticket in the belief that makes the moderator's job easier.

There's a list:
http://www.goodreads.com/author/on_goodreads

Mostly I find them by a link in the Completed Tasks thread or I stumble on them looking for a book.

Looking at the books on your shelves, GR Authors have an asterisk by their name.

As mentioned above, there's a note when you look at the author or book page.

message 267: by El (new)

El Sara Grace, there are some authors (like Neil Gaiman) who actually have a Goodreads profile and updates his page just like the rest of us "little people". :)

I don't usually search out Goodreads authors myself, but I might read something by someone who turns out to be on Goodreads. I'm sure there's a list somewhere too, but I suck at that sort of thing.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Man - I have been forgetting all about including whether the author is a GR author or not. I definitely have to get better organized!

message 271: by Julie J (new)

Julie J | 115 comments One other idea (although I have only read through half of these posts, but I got to run - so not sure if it was said already) is to eliminate all the extra things in a task, like having to give a book away or volunteer or play a game or post a review or post a certain comment or a non-reading thing that is in addition to the book(s) you have to read. That often (in my experience) is the problem with not posting correctly and that might save the mods from having to get people to fix their posts. Just a thought. I see it was changed to ask task designers to possibly make those optional, but maybe that could be firm. No worries either way, but I completely understand how there is just more and more for the mods to keep track of and maybe we could simplify it for them.

I think getting extra points if you do the optional extras would be a good option.

right now extra points sounds like a nightmare ... maybe after we have 4 moderators for a while we can see if that will work

scherzo♫ (pjreads) Christine wrote: "When are we expecting the move of the group/new fall tasks posted/etc to happen? I'm assuming it would be in the next week or so?"

Sandy's planning the poll for the new group name for Sunday. Whatever name a group is created under is the group name (can't edit it). I'm hoping to get the new group set up to the point that we can do the Group Reads polls there by the end of next week (barring more surprises).

The 5/10/15 point tasks for the new challenge are usually posted about 2 weeks before the challenge starts. That's what we're aiming for.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) You guys and everyone that is helping you are phenomenal.

message 277: by Alice (new)

Alice (aliceg) | 424 comments Pj that's great thank you. Have you got the extra people that are needed for the new group moderator wise? If there is any job that you need filled maybe just posting them on here may be a good idea as some people may be happy to volunteer for specific jobs rather than say they'll be moderator as that can sound scary! Just a thought and of course if you've got the people you need it's a redundant thought!

I like the rule that you either have to post the books author AND title OR add link to the book. If you are claiming it as a GR Author link to author must be included.

Maybe getting rid of the extra requirements for tasks may be a good idea just for the next challenge. That way it will ease the 4 moderators into it and see how you all get on. Then if it's felt that extra requirements could be added they can be for the Winter Challenge.

Has Sandy been able to sort out creating a poll within this group for the new one? I hope so as it will make it easier to choose the new name otherwise I guess you could on the amount of times one is backed in the Rename thread.

Are there only going to be ten 25 point tasks and then if more people finish be 30 point tasks or are there going to be just sets of ten 25 point tasks? I'm sorry if that is already mentioned in the rules and I've missed it. Don't want to check back now as will lose this post doing so!

Thanks PJ and Sandy (and anyone else who may be now working behind the scenes) I think you realise by now that we all want the challenges to continue so appreciate all your work!

Alice x

Hi Alice...In post 159 PJ put all the new rules. From my understanding the 1st 5 people who complete the challenge will have the 30 point task after that anyone else who completes the challenge will get a 25 point task so if only 6 people complete a challenge there will be only one 25 point task. (Somebody please correct me if I am wrong). But if 20 people complete the challenge there will be 15 25 point tasks.

message 279: by Alice (new)

Alice (aliceg) | 424 comments Hi Megan,

Yes I just read over the rules and I saw that the task points were confirmed in there. Thanks though!

I wondered if rule 18 could just be tweaked a bit to say: That a person can choose another person to create their task. I think that saying that a person can pass their task to someone else isn't quite clear if you have never done the challenge before. It may confuse you!
