Gail Hedrick | 120 comments Easy for you to say-you probably are your own webmaster, too!! I am not sure how a read would get done-my minor was speech and theatre, so I've always dreamed of doing voice overs! Anyway, I might ask my webmaster about doing a read.
Hope your cat tales sell like crazy!

Oh, yes-a lot to learn? I've been writing for years, and sometimes it seems like I'm just a rank beginner! Always something new to learn. Promotion is hard for me, so I hope it comes easy for you as it's important. Have a great Labor Day!

Alison Maskell | 1 comments Hi, Jodi and all members, I'm Alison and live just outside of London, U.K.
I'm not a published author as I have not yet completed my first book, reasons being is 1. I'm very self-critical and 2. I class writing as 'me-time', and like most mums, that usually comes after everything else if you have the time!
I used to love reading as a child, usually Enid Blyton and the style where my imagination wandered to believe I was there in the story.
My first experience of writing 'a lengthy piece' was whilst at school at the age of eight years, where we were expected to write a page on evacuees, my 'piece' was 23 pages long.
After 'the Terrible Teens' years and youth passed by, I married and had children. My passion for writing was re-ignited by my eldest daughter, who was approximately two to three years at the time, wanting the same 'made up' story each night, or the same characters, so I thought I had better write them down, and hence, my dawn of writing was again re-born.

Hello, Alison!
Welcome! You don't have to be published to be a writer :)...sounds like you already are! Putting it to paper is just part of it. Sounds like you have amazing inspiration though! Happy to meet you, and that you've joined the group. It has grown into an amazing and ecclectic group of authors...some published, some newly published, and some working on that next phase. I hope you'll enjoy!

Robyn Safarian (robynsafarian) | 7 comments Hello everyone,

My book 'Kangaroo Kangaroo Where Are You?' is free on Kindle today: http://www.amazon.com/Kangaroo-Deligh...

I know giving your book out for free is a bit controversial and not everyone thinks it to be a good promotional tool. However, I think it's a decent way of getting your book in front of readers and possibly reviewers as well; especially if you don't enjoy the same shelf space as bestsellers in major bookstores.

What's your take on it? I'd love to have some feedback.

Cheers,
Robyn

First glance, it's adorable and the drawings are sure to grab kids.
Your giveaway day will probably pay off. Best wishes.
Also, will there be more 'kanga' adventures?
Gail

message 236: by Robyn (new)

Robyn Safarian (robynsafarian) | 7 comments Hi Gail,

Thank you for your lovely feedback.

There might be more kanga adventures in the future, but right now I'm working on a series called Molly Wonders. It's about a kindergarten age girl who is curious about things that happen around her and the silly yet funny questions she asks.

Cheers,
Robyn

Children's Book Insiders is a website I learned about a few months ago. They have critic groups and discussions that help you learn about the craft of children's writing and how to get published. If you search CBI clubhouse you will find it. I have already learned so much from them. http://cbiclubhouse.com/clubhouse/ This link might help- However you will need to join. It only costs a few dollars a month.

Carol, happy you have joined our group! That's what I love about this group. When I started it, I was only newly published and had no idea what I was doing, lol. Remember, every author was unpublished at some point, so don't worry...no intinmidating here...just a lovely group of people...some published..some aspiring to be...so enjoy and we're all heere to help! :)

Happy to fill you in. You can find it online at the CBI Clubhouse. It's a program that helps you work on your story and eventually get published - learning how to write, market etc. I have already learned so much from them. I am working with a critic group and a critic partner. It does cost just a few dollars every month, but it's worth it.

Hi Deborah,
Welcome to the group. I was curious. Are you wanting to self-publish your books? Or do an e-book? I'm trying to decide for my first picture book. I'm pretty low-budget too.

AUTHOR: Deborah Gandy | 5 comments Hi Carol, Thanks for the welcome. My first book I self published which set my husband and I back a bit. I personally think they charged too much for the book since the economy is so bad but I had NO control over that with company I used. I personally prefer a book I can hold in hands but it seems EVERYTHING is going to e-books. Kids are crazy about these new gadgets! My book has not done so well so far as I can't afford to advertise. Maybe we can get some helpful hints from this site, if only in encouragement. Good luck and hang in there, Carol.

message 248: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Deb,
I did a copy paste of an email of an email that was sent to me. I learned about this award through Childrens' Book Insider. Here is the info: Good luck

Ezra Jack Keats New Writer Award

Presented by: The University of Southern Mississippi & the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation

Contact Person: Ellen Ruffin
Curator, The de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection
601-266-4349
Email: ellen.ruffin@usm.edu

This award, made possible through the generous support of the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation, will be given to a new writer for a picture book written in the tradition of Ezra Jack Keats that:
• Highlights the universal qualities of childhood and the strength of the family
• Reflects the multicultural nature of our world
• Has an original text and original story (no folk tales or retelling of folk tales)
• Unifies illustrations and text
• Avoids stereotypes
• Is respectful of the child’s intelligence, sensitivity, curiosity and love of learning
• Displays freshness and originality of language and literary expression

This award is given for distinguished writing and text, not for illustration.
The intent of the New Writer Award is to identify and encourage early talent, and so to be eligible, the author will have no more than three children’s books previously published.
Books that have not already received awards will be given preference.
No books by committee members or their immediate families will be considered.

To be eligible, books must have a 2012 copyright date. Entries may be sent at any time during the year prior to the deadline of December 31, 2012.

A cash award of $1,000 coupled with the esteemed Ezra Jack Keats medallion inscribed with the recipient’s name will be presented to the winning author at the Keats Awards Celebration. The celebration will be held at The University of Southern Mississippi, 118 College Dr., Hattiesburg, MS 39406. Further, a handsome gold seal with the image of Peter in a red snow suit from The Snowy Day is available to the publisher to affix to copies of the book. The Foundation expects that the winning book will carry the seal.

The publishers are asked to:
• Be sure the books submitted meet the above criteria
• Ensure and underwrite the appearance of the winning author at the award presentation, along with the editor and publishing house representative
• Agree to display the Ezra Jack Keats New Writer Award seal on the winning book
• Send a copy of each entry to all of the members of the committee
• Please indicate on the package that the enclosed items are for the EJK Awards
