Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments I know Cassie says somewhere that there can be varying power levels among masters, even when they're first level, but I suppose I always assumed that Senators were at the top of the pile. But thinking about it now, that's probably not correct.

If Senators are challenged, they're allowed to pick someone to duel in their place, so I suppose they don't need to be off-the-chart powerful if they can call on someone to fight for them. So, for instance, if you had excellent mental skills like Mircea, or powerful connections or perhaps some amazing first-level super power, a Consul might want you on his/her Senate, even if you weren't the most powerful master. If you were challenged, the Consul could appoint someone like LC to fight for you, because you were useful in other ways and they'd have your back. So I guess sheer raw power isn't the be all and end all that I assumed it might be.

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments When we did hear the name of the African consul in FK, as I recall it sounded vaguely familiar as being a prominent African figure from maybe the time of the Crusades?

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Kathleen, the African consul is called Hassani. KC gave some info on him in a Q & A a while back ...

What historical figure (if any) is Hassani based on?
Hassan-i Sabbā, the founder of the Order of Assassins. Since he’s head of the African Senate, which governs the Middle East as well as Africa, I thought it only fair to use someone with ties to both regions. Hassani was born in Iran and ended up in Cairo, so he fit. Plus, he and the order he founded have always interested me.

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments Has KC mentioned when vampirism started? It would have to be sometime after humans became quite numerous and lived in towns to provide enough sustenance (without much traveling in between feedings, or vamps would have died out. So, only within the last few thousand years. That means the old consul on the elephant, if he was 5,000 years old, would be one of the first. I wouldn't have thought the population in Egypt would have been dense enough so early... 3000, though, should work. with large groups gathering to build the great temples and monuments. Maybe another
question for KC?

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments I don't think we need big cities to have vampires. I think we need big cities to sustain a large group of vampires. But if it's a metaphysical disease, it could have began the same time as humanity. Who knows?

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments I'm guessing "the old consul on the elephant" is from Masks? I suppose this, on its own, isn't exactly a spoiler, but could we please keep everything Masks-related to the spoiler thread for now. A minor comment can easily spark a discussion which leads to giving away something major. It's easier for everyone to follow if all Masks discussion is kept to the one thread until the spoiler period ends. Thank you kindly!
