message 402: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Welcome to the group, Krystal! I'm going to put more effort into keeping track of my movies. In fact, I just signed up for a 50 movie challenge. It should be interesting.

message 403: by Krystal (new)

Krystal (crazylittlebookpage) Thanks for the welcome :)

JanBreesmom (goodreadscomjanbreesmom) | 55 comments 1.) I have 3 small grandsons ages 7 mon., 2 & 1/2 yrs and almost four yrs old. My oldest grandson has been diagnosed with severe autism last year...I am reading everything I can about autism to better understand him and be able to help.

2.) I worked 23 yrs as a registered nurse in an acute care hospital. I retired because of a disability last April.

3.) I really enjoy everything Twilight related. I belong to a Twilight discussion group and have blogged in the past for Twilight fan sites.

4.) Although I'm a real amateur, I've developed an avid interest in photography and crafts involving photographs.

5.) Playing the piano was my passion growing up. I hope to get back into playing now that I have more free time. Practicing takes hours each day (but I found it very therapeutic when did it in the past)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Welcome, Jan. I've never been good at anything musical. I envy people that can play instruments. I can't get past learning to read the sheet music. I can't hear a tune and play it either so I am doomed in the music department.

In my limited experience, the best thing for him is doing what you are already doing. Learn, learn, learn! Not just about autism, but about your grandson individually- mannerisms, triggers, etc. But, I'm sure you already know that. :)

I student taught in an inclusion classroom and had two autistic students. I loved them and I wouldn't mind getting my special education certification because they had such an impact on me!

message 406: by Laura (new)

Laura (lglovett) | 1444 comments Krystal, I also put my DVD's in alphabetical order. It drives me insane when they aren't.

Jan, I also played the piano as a child, although I never was very good at it.

Welcome to the group, ladies!

I have a son who is High Functioning autistic, he's an amazing and bright child, I can only imagine that your grandson is also very bright and has taught you so many things about life you never knew. If you'd like to chat please message me

I don't meant to be rude, but, There is nothing to be sorry for when it comes to a child with Autism. It's not a life ending disease and it shouldn't be thought of as something to be sympathetic over. It's this kind of ignorance that hinders children who have Autism, most people think they are not capable children and they are unable to do the same things that "normal" children do. Don't be sorry that someone was blessed with a child who has autism because honestly children who have autism are AMAZING! Sorry I just really get offended and on edge when people apologize to people with Children who have Autism.

But you're correct in one thing, it's always good to learn everything you can about the spectrum and the mannerisms of a child with Autism.

message 409: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments You're right, Krystal. I never know how to start out talking about it. As you said "sorry" is not the correct word. I guess I said that for lack of knowing what else to say and that makes me look ignorant. No offense taken and I regret my choice of words. Please accept my apology. I did not mean to offend you in any way. Autistic children are amazing and I loved teaching them while student teaching. These particular parents were not all that supportive of their kids and seemed to think of their children as a burden rather than a blessing. These are the only autistic children and parents I have ever had contact with and it seems to have clouded my judgement and outlook as far as having an autistic child. I will edit my comment.
Thank you for letting me know how you felt and that not all parents are like the two I encountered.

message 410: by Krystal (new)

Krystal (crazylittlebookpage) Rachel I accept your apology, and I'm very sorry if I sounded harsh. I'm also sorry that you encountered two parents who felt their children were a burden, how sad of them to think so. I just want to let you know though that for the most part those parents are the exception and not the rule when it comes to autism and having children with autism. I know so many people with autistic children from a support group I am a part of who feel that their children are such a blessing and are so proud of them. I will admit it can be very trying to have a child with ASD but the wonderful moments far outweigh the trying moments

message 411: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments It did not sound harsh, very heartfelt. :) I can tell you are passionate about it, which you should be, it is your CHILD and I know I would feel the same about mine! I am glad to know that these parents were not the majority and wish they could be more like the way you sound.

message 424: by Amanda (new)

Sounds awesome! I did laugh at the cows part though. I didn't know there were cows in the safari.

What a dope...I just accidentally deleted my own post that you commented on. Sometimes...okay...most of the time, I am computer challenged. Anyway...as far as the turkey goes, Lisa, I don't recommend it. A fresh caught turkey stinks to high heaven when you gut it, then you have to dunk the foul fowl in boiling water to pluck the feathers, then clean it and cook it. Does it taste like the store-bought? Not even close. Yuck!!!! Give me a Butterball any day. So, see...not so talented. LOL

5. I read constantly. If I'm not actively engaging another human being then I'm probably consuming written material somehow. I listen to audiobooks in the car, the grocery store, in line at the bank. Then when I'm sitting down I'm probably reading text.

message 433: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Sounds like we have a lot in common, Sara. I love to bake, too. And I usually have an audiobook playing in my ear when I grocery shop. I wish I worked in a bookstore! Of course, I'd spend all my paycheck.

message 434: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Welcome to the group, Sara! If you ever need someone to taste test your baked goods then I'm your girl. Just ship them to me! :)

Also, you're job sounds awesome!

Yeah, I have that problem. I joke that the owner should just pay me in gift cards. Though, the publishers do send us free books, which helps with making the bills.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Oh, love Baby Roo, Aqueda! My parents let me play the violin, because it was their favorite instrument, but I was never was any good at it. Come to think of it, why did they do that? LOL!

Hot artichoke and green chili dip (requested by my besties every time I host), gingerbread with lemon sauce, and drinks of course!
