Benedicte Serner Hi everyone. Another new person signing in. First of all I am really with you on that Keely, although University has kind of made me enjoy modern works more.
1) I work for a horrible print on demand publicing agency, so I know just how hard it can be to get published, which makes me very critical of new authors. I usually say that they have 50 pages to wow me or I will put it down. Not a big fan of those books that people swear will get better, halfway through.
2) I am a literary English Master, currently seeking permission to do a PhD on Generation A.
3) My favorite book is Pride and Prejustice, I have read my copy that I got for my 10th birthday so many times that it has no cover anymore and some of the words are so smudged out that they are not readable.
4) I speak and read 8 languages and have always known that I was going to do something with language or literature.
5) I am an avid Larper and tabletop roleplayer.

Sans Welcome everyone!

Kirsten wrote: "My current (rather obsessive) hobby/interest is genealogy, specifically researching my own family tree. (which now can be traced back to about 800AD) Though I do dabble in researching for other people too..."

I've been wanting to do this for a while myself. My dad recently pieced together (through stories passed down in his family that may or may not be accurate) that our ancestors were kicked out of Scotland fighting for Bonnie Prince Charlie and later generations fought for the South in the Civil War. I've been wanting to trace our roots since then but have no idea where to start. How do you do your research?

I started by filling what I knew about my immediate family, then added in any information my relatives could remember/dig up in their own records. Now I've been using Ancestry.ca/.com/.co.uk to find more evidence and sources for my information. Also if I can I'll visit graveyards where my family is said to be buried. Headstones can give a lot of key information about a person and/or their family... :)

Morgan Vank (katara317) | 10 comments 1) I have a 20 lb cat
2) For all the books I read, I can still maintain a 3.6 GPA or better
3) I'm heavily interested in the mind and adolescent paychology
4) I'm an avid game player, mainly online games.
5) I'm telling you these facts as I watch the Casey Anthony Trial

message 305: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Welcome, Alexei. I'm envious of the GPA thing. I have to drop back on how many books I read to keep my grades up.

message 306: by Trish (new)

Trish Bodine (trishbodine) | 3 comments Hmmm....

3. I am a soccer coach.

4. World of Warcraft, gardening, computer graphics, writing and cooking are my other hobbies.

5. Tramp the Wonderdog is more spoiled than my husband, or so he says. :) lol

message 307: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Welcome to the group, Trish. That's quite a gap that you're teaching. Congrats on all the weight loss.

Sashana Welcome to the group, Ingrid. My best has quite a few ridiculous phobias too. She hates taking elevators. Every time we go somewhere she hyperventilates in the elevator or takes the stairs. She also hates clowns. I'm trying to get her to go to the circus with me for my bday next year and it's a challenge. I'm not an animal lover but I gotta agree with you on those animal commercials. I always change the channel when they come on. I can't bring myself to watch them.

Elise-Pinterest+Goodreads=The Perfect Book Boyfriend (eliselovesshinyandnew) | 7 comments @Trish-Congrats. I had lapbanding three years ago and lost 70 pounds. I want to lose 10 more but I am at a standstill for some strange reason. Just started Zumba about 3 weeks ago so we will see.

@Sashana-My 18 yr old hates clowns too. At first I thought she was kidding but no, she really hates clowns.

@Cassy-I am so jealous-8 langauges. I think that is wonderful!

message 311: by Kylee (new)

Kylee Sartwell 1. I am not afraid of heights but I am afraid of falling.
2. I am obsessed with the tissue paper toilet seat protectors.
3. I love all kinds of cheese except Limburger.
4. I am still disappointed that Dr. Quinn Medicine was cancelled.
5. I have met Tom Wopat twice.

message 312: by Sans (new)

Sans Sashana wrote: "She also hates clowns."

There's nothing wrong with hating clowns. They're obscene pedobear crimes against nature and man. *shudders and trying to think about something else now*

message 313: by Sans (new)

Sans Ingrid wrote: "Every time i watch a commercial about the endagered species or how animals have been brutally beaten and abused to death, i cry in the middle."

Me, too. I have to change the channel. Especially when it's one of the commercials with that Sarah McLachlan song playing. ;_;

message 314: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Sans wrote: "Me, too. I have to change the channel..."

Is that the one that says "In the arms of an angel..."? And I'm guessing you hate clowns too? I've always found clowns to be extremely funny. They're usually very nice people.

message 315: by Sans (new)

Sans Yeah, the Angel song. If I can't find the remote, I leave the room very quickly and turn my stereo up.

Oh yeah. Big on the clown hate here. I have to cover my eyes when they're in commercials and I refuse to watch a movie or tv show if there's a clown in it.

message 316: by Micha (new)

Micha (micha85) | 32 comments Hmmm... I've commented on a few posts, but not really done these getting to know you (feels like bursting into song) type things on goodreads, so here goes!

1. I have mentioned it before but I'll do it again here. I'm Scottish. I love being Scottish but nobody would think it. My boyfriend is American, and am excited at the prospect of going over to America for a while when his visa expires. I don't even have a particularly strong Scottish accent - I spent my formidable years with my English grandparents. Constantly being asked if I'm English, or lately it's been American.

2. I love cats! I had a silver tabby that I had to re-home with some relatives when I moved to the city as I'm not allowed pets in my apartment. I miss the little silly thing so much, but now if I visit a friend that has a dog I spend more time with the animals than I do my friends lol.

3. I read to escape life sometimes. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Being an unemployed student (but I still have an income) I sometimes feel that life's a bit dull and depressing, so I actively try to lose myself in a book which cheers me up no end!

4. I'm shamefully addicted to Starbucks. I have been known to put £50 onto my Starbucks card and find that it's run out a week later. But I'd live on caramel machiattos if I could!

5. I think it's safe to say that I'm addicted to books. Maybe not books, but certainly addicted to buying them. I can't go past a book store without wanting to buy lots of books. My friends, family and my boyfriend all now know that if they're with me when we walk past the stores they have to firmly take me by the arm and drag me past. I think my sister has had to pick me up and carry me away from a book shop before now.

I'm glad I don't work in a book shop or their shelves would be empty and I'd have absolutely no money!

message 317: by Sans (new)

Sans Hi Michelle! I wish I was Scottish. Way back in the family tree is not enough for me. Where is Scotland are you from?

I love cats too (got two little furry people of my own). And I'm also going to ditto your last three points as well (breakfast every day is a triple venti extra hot soy latte), I love losing myself in a story to get away from all the crap in RL and I have over 2,000 books. My first retail job was at a bookshop and at least 1/3 of every paycheck went into buying books.

message 318: by Micha (new)

Micha (micha85) | 32 comments Hi Sans!

Was born and raised in the Highlands (born and spent my childhood in Inverness and spent my high school years in Thurso), but have lived in Glasgow for the past year.

I love that I'm Scottish, but it's not a country you want to live in if you suffer from SAD!

Haven't got many books as I usually give them away to family and friends. Often I'll read a book and it makes me think of someone. Though when I lived with my grandparents when I was a teenager they had (and still have) a library at the back of their house that stretches almost the length of their house. Floor to ceiling shelves, I love that room! Could never move back to Thurso though - no Starbucks for a hundred miles (though there is a little Costa at John O' Groats lol).

I find it so funny how no American is American - they're all Irish, Scottish, Scots-Irish or Italian. Often have the argument with my boyfriend that he is an American, while he says he is Irish. He's American with Irish heritage! Haha! If I were to go by my heritage I would have to say I was French, which isn't my idea of fun.

message 319: by Sans (new)

Sans Hi Michelle! I'm so sorry for the delay, RL keeps trying to convince me I need to actually work at work. WTF?

Ahhh, so lucky! I'm planning a trip to the Highlands for late spring. I think I have reverse-SAD, actually. I get really cheerful and energetic the more rainy and gloomy it is outside and sunshine and warm weather turn me into a weepy grumpy pants. ^o^

RE: Americans, no joke, right? It gets pretty ridiculous around here, especially in younger generations.

Great to meet you!

message 320: by Ema (last edited Aug 13, 2011 04:37PM) (new)

Ema Five things about me:

1. I'd live a life in yoga pants and oversized t-shirts, if I could get away with it.

2. I absolutely LOVE cheese, I'm willing to try any kind.

3. I'm the worst procrastinator. But I tend to work much better under time constraints and pressure.

4. I have dreams of going to UMich and becoming a psychiatrist. Key word: Dreams.

5. I like to let things just roll off. But up until that point, I'm a nervous wreck.

Simply put, I'm quite strange...

message 321: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments You're aren't strange Ema. I think you'll fit in great with this group. I hope, however, you're okay with being considered normal instead of strange. :)

message 329: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) Hi everyone Lisa Kay told me of this group, and if she's here, then I know it's a good place *waves at Lisa Kay*

Anyway, here's my 5 random things:

1 - I was born in Texas, I will forever be a Texan in my heart, but I don't think I'll ever move back. It's just too damn hot! But I miss it dearly!

2 - Of course, I love to read thanks to my mommy who seriously encouraged me from a young age, it's one of the best "gifts" she's ever given me.

3 - I'll be 34 this month, married for 12 years, no kids and I love it this way. I get to spend everyday with my best friend and we do whatever the hell we want!

4 - Someone else mentioned phobias, I am slightly agoraphobic, if it weren't for my husband I could see me becoming one of those crazy ladies with tons of cats who never left and no one knew she died until the smell was bad, I love being at home! I'm not afraid to leave, just really prefer my own place. Too many people make me agitated.

5 - I realize this is a 'Nothing but Reading Challenges' group but honestly I don't know how well I'm gonna do on this, as deadlines make me want to thumb my nose at them, but we shall see!

message 330: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Welcome to the group, Shell's Bells (I love the name!). I love that you're married with no children, I don't think I want any either but people write me off when I say this because I'm "young". We have many people who aren't great with challenges but they still have a good time.

message 331: by Lisa Kay (last edited Sep 03, 2011 07:23PM) (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments **big wave at Shelly**

@ Shell's Bells

#1 - I was born in Texas too! Too young to remember it.

#2 - I had a neat mom who would read great things like Jules Verne!

#3 - We share a birthday month. I'm be 29 this month. **keeps a straight face while saying this**

#4 - Me too, LOL!

#5. - There are a lot of fun things to do in this group, Shelly. :)

message 332: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) @Sashana - We wanted kids, even tried all the fertility crap several times, just wasn't meant to be. I live in OK now, and believe me, I still get tons of crap about it, people are too damn nosy and rude about it, trying to give all sorts of advice when I tell them it wasn't we didn't want, but couldn't have. I feel like asking them about their sex lives and asking if I can see their bank statements to see if they like me being just as nosy.

message 333: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) Hi Lisa Kay!!

1 - This makes you awesome anyway, I knew there was a reason I liked you so much!

2 - My mom would make me read my own books, but then I had to tell her all about them, mini book reports but only more fun! She was too busy reading western romances!

3 - LK, I didn't know you were younger than me!!!

4 - We'll be crazy cat ladies together!

5 - You're here, I already know it's fun!

message 334: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Shelly,

#2 - My dad was the western reader. When he became ill, I would read them to him. Got me hooked; their good!

#3 - That's my story. :)

#4 - Okay! Can I have one dog?

#5 - Thanks. (BTW - I did the whole fertility crap too. And I'v had people tell me I was "selfish" b/c I had no children. Whoa!)

message 335: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) I'll defend your story; depends on the dog; and I hate nosy people!

message 340: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Johnson (gypsybecky) I have four and he has five! Thankfully they all get along and are good kids or I would not have any sanity!!!

message 342: by Beth (new)

Beth (crazytarantelle) 1. I spend an insane amount of time here on GR and on last.fm.

2. By the time I was eight I was reading at a college level.

3. I'm a California girl, born and raised and I still live in the same area (but I wish I didn't!).

4. I'm an only child and even though I'm grown, I still wish that I had siblings.

5. I collect random postcards and have a whole wall in my bedroom looks like a postcard version of a patchwork quilt.

message 343: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Welcome to the group, Beth!

#4 I think a lot of people with siblings don't want them and a lot of people without them want them. Personally I'm still waiting on a DNA test for my brother.

#5 Are they post cards of places you've been? I think that's a cool collection.

message 344: by Beth (new)

Beth (crazytarantelle) Thanks for the welcome, Sashana!

#4 Most of my friends with siblings say they would give many things to be an only child like me. The offer to trade on a regular basis. Haha.

#5 I wish they were Postcards of places I've been (I haven't really traveled much, just around the states)! A few of them are of places that I really want to travel to but most are random art postcards that I found on Zazzle. Which means most are odd and quirky. :-D
