message 555: by Lára (new)

Lára 1. I´m taphophile. I did not know my obsession has a name before reading The Restorer. Thanks, Ms. Stevens, now I can tell people about it with just a one word!

2. I love animals. I´m obsessed with frogs (toads included) and all thing aquatic! I have 4 aquariums and two ponds with all kind of fishes and snails. And everyone´s (except snails, since I have more than 100) named and over a year old. I have a pet mouse whose name is Gregor, pet rabbit named Casper, two budgies and a canary. It´s a big family (including fish and snails, of course).

3. I absolutely adore plants! Gardening is my number three hobby (see two above for first two hobbies. I have room full of plants (winters are too cold for outside gardening), and of course, planted aquariums! And some plants actually have personal names.

4. I hate repeating. Can´t read, watch, play the same thing more than once and it´s driving me nuts!

5. I have a dark sense of humor. I tend to laugh at situations people usually don´t find funny at all

message 558: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Miller 1. I love to write but hate for people to read my stuff.
2. I am a dedicated exerciser!
3. I'm incredibly opinionated.
4. I am trying to work on my writing skills by reviewing books.
5. It takes a lot to get me talking, but once I start I don't shut up!

message 559: by Ashley Marie (last edited Mar 08, 2013 10:51AM) (new)

Ashley Marie (darlingdoor) | 1733 comments Hi Mandy! I wish I was a dedicated exerciser - kudos to you!

Here's mine:

1. I'm a Whovian. I can't wait for this series of Doctor Who to start back up! Honestly, I really love anything that Steven Moffat does - I love Sherlock, too!
2. I've met lots of famous people through my previous job as an event planner for a college, but the only people I've ever fangirled-out over meeting were Neil Gaiman and Peter S. Beagle. I started crying when I met Peter, and he was so gracious about how awkward I was (Nerd Girl problems!). Neil tweeted about my wedding and it was by far the coolest thing that ever happened to me.
3. I work for a small non-profit Literacy Council, and I'm so proud of the work we do! We focus on adult literacy, and have helped many people gain ESL skills and their GEDs.
4. I just got married in December. My husband thinks I have a Goodreads addiction and refuses to enable me by joining the site himself, even though he loves to read.
5. I have a swiss mountain dog named Sora, who we rescued from the pound. He thinks he's people. Here's a picture of his shnoz:
Sora

Erika | 22 comments It's very impressive what you do there, Ashley Marie! I want to work somewhere where I could also say I'm proud of the work I do! :)

And It's pretty cool you met Neil Gaiman! I saw your profile picture, I'm jealous, lol.

message 561: by Laura (new)

Laura (lglovett) | 1444 comments Welcome, Mandy!

I wish that I was a dedicated exerciser and that I enjoyed it!

Welcome, Ashley Marie!

I love Dr. Who and I believe there are lots of Whovians in this group.
Its awesome that you have met some famous people, specifically writers.
Your job is cool. I would love to do something like that along with my teaching.

message 562: by Mary (last edited Mar 08, 2013 04:50PM) (new)

Mary (merinwe) | 1043 comments Did someone say Doctor Who? ;-D

Mandy, I completely feel you about #1. I love to write as well, but I never show my stuff to anyone.

Ashley Marie, I am SO jealous of you meeting Neil Gaiman (as are we all, probably). Your dog is the cutest. Also, love Sherlock too!

message 563: by ~Mariee~ (new)

~Mariee~ | 12 comments 1: I love the Winter Season, and I hate to be hot and sweaty, (but i do like mild sunny days.)
2: I really wish I was more of a sporty person. I would love to take up running to be alittle more healthier and lighter, but never seem to have the time. After work, and the kids, all I want to do is relax with a cup of tea and read my book. I feel so Lazy :(
3: I am an office administrator, and I do love my job, but if I could get a job that allowed me to read all day, I would be in Heaven.
4: When i was growing up, I used to dream of having 3 children, 2 girls and one boy, and unbelievably, that is exactly what I've had!! I count my lucky stars everyday.
5: A dinner table surrounded by people who enjoy the same books as me would be my idea of bliss!!

message 564: by Julia (new)

Julia (juliace) 1) I love to go fishing - salt and freshwater doesn't matter as long as I can drop a line. (catching something isn't bad either)
2) I'm starting to have dog withdrawal. We (my family) always had one in NJ and after being in FL for 20 years I'm jonesing for one . .. BAD
3) I LOVE cookbooks. I can't go into a bookstore and not buy a cookbook - and I don't even cook! Go figure
4) It takes awhile for me to warm up to new people, but once I do warm up you can't get me to shut up . .
5) With 50 breathing down my neck, I REALLY need to start taking care of myself and eating better, so I've started taking a couple of zumba classes and I LOVE THEM!!!

message 565: by Jex (new)

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments @~Mariee~: I'm the same way with the running thing. Each day I say this is the day I jump on the treadmill, but then I sit on the computer for 3 hours instead :-P

It may not be a dinner table, but hopefully you'll find some people in NBRC to talk about those books with!

message 566: by Jex (new)

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments @Julia2848: Interesting about the cookbooks thing. Is it the pictures of food? Or finding recipes you want others to make you?

message 567: by Ahenry (last edited May 16, 2013 09:21AM) (new)

Ahenry | 0 comments 1) I have a touch of OCD. Not in the way we all do, but for real. My kids each went through mild bouts of tics and oddisms as well. It is much better now, but I still will find myself with the occasional blinking tic or some such thing.

2) I love to garden. I keep expanding my gardens, and I am waiting for my HOA to say enough is enough. I organically grow my fruits and veggies.

3) Along that OCD line, I get into these..ruts...I went years unable to sit in anything but the third seat from the aisle at a theater. After 9/11, I came up with this lengthy bedtime prayer that I said from memory each night... for nine years (missing only one night) though I am not terribly religious. Stuff like that.

4) I am terrified to fly. I take Valium. And more valium. And chardonnay. And occasionally rum. And still, I cry.

5) Lisarenee has flown with me. She can vouch for number 4. She and I went on vacation together several years ago.

message 568: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (books4mellie) This is fun!

1. I am a mother of 3 kids under 9, AND I'm pregnant with twin girls.

2. I have run 3 marathons since 2010, 8 half marathons since 2009, and 4 triathlons since 2011.

3. I am a HUGE fan of Joss Whedon. I love all things Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse, Avengers, etc.

4. Reading is my absolute favorite thing to do. But sometimes between great books, I get 'moody' and can't settle down with anything. I call it my book floozy phase.

5. I love reading Christian non-fiction and completing Bible studies. I love feeling like I'm improving my mind and soul continuously and being able to share that with my family.

message 569: by Shelly (new)

Shelly Bretheim (shellybre) | 43 comments 1. I am the mother of 2 girls and run a daycare in my home for 11 other kids; so any adult interaction is great!!

2. I teach theater/drama to elementary aged kids in an after school type setting and absolutely love it. It is saving my sanity since after 20 years of different levels of acting I haven't been on stage in over 9 years

3. I grew up an Army Brat and am so thankful to have had that crazy, adventure as a kid

4. I love to read pretty much anything, but I also make jewelry. I have an entire bucket of stuff that I have made that I need to get rid of before my husband will let me enter another bead shop so if you want anything just let me know :)

5. Since I grew up moving around so much I get a little stir crazy being in one place for a long period of time (before I got married 3 years was my max in one house and there I changed bedrooms half way through) so I start rearranging furniture and painting every year or so. Recently got an itch and while my oldest and my husband were at Talledega (a NASCAR event) I totally redid her room. So I should be ok for another year or so

message 570: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (mentha) 1. I speak 3 languages fluently. I can however not spell perfectly in any of them. The firefox dictionary plugin is my live-saver.
2. I live in a cottage smack in the middle of a cultural nature reservation and still use a wood-stove and a hearth to keep the place warm in winter. I pump water from my own well in the garden and I don't have to pay any tv, phone or internet bills since non of these things are present in my cottage either. I'm also one of the few students who do not live at home and still can pay for all her living expenses without having a loan or a job.
3. I have a large set of useless talents. One of them is balloon folding, which is something I learned when volunteering at the local animal shelter. Another is that I can navigate with coordinates with a map an compass. Something pretty damn useless now everyone has a gps on their phone.
4. I don't have a car or a bus card. I simply take my bike everywhere.
5. I wanted to become an entomologist as a kid. However, there are no entomology educations in Sweden so it never came to be. I have however a large collection of books on bugs and my walls are adorned with butterflies, maggots, moths, beetles and spiders, both plastic and real.

Chatterjak 1. I'm brand new to good reads & I love it already, sadly I'm hopeless at using websites & computers - I'm not sure if this is because I've let myself get out of date with everything, or whether I'm just a total dummy with any thing vaguely technological (I'd like to think I'm otherwise reasonably bright!!)
2. I've been a voracious reader since I was a child, and love nothing better than to escape into a really good book
3. I'm at a professional crossroads in my life, unsure about what direction I should be taking. I've had no enthusiasm for my work for the last few years really, but can't decide what career I'd prefer, and feel its late/too expensive to go back to studying at 38. I really feel stuck.
4. I've secretly always wanted to be a writer but doubt my ability, & seriously lack confidence in general. I also suffer with spells of clinical depression & anxiety disorder. I hide it a lot & most people would probably describe me as cheerful & outgoing - which I am when I'm well!
5. I'm in a civil partnership (& deeply in love!) with the most wonderful supportive woman ever, we've been together for eleven years. We're both animal fans & currently have one cat & two dogs (although we did once peak at 4 dogs & 3 cats!) - all very spoiled of course :)
