message 458: by Christina (new)

Christina (christinagilmer) Hello everyone. I am new to the group. My name is Chrissy and I live with my family in Maryland. I'm a newbie when it comes to Amish fiction but I have really enjoyed the books I have read thus far and look forward to reading more. I just finished reading Cindy Woodsmall's "The Christmas Singing" and found that it was a very delightful read. I plan to read her book "The Harvest of Grace" next.

This is a unique book in comparison to our normal Amish fiction book. I can't wait to hear what you think of it!

I'm about in the middle of it now. I'm finding the Shaker lifestyle bewildering, yet interesting! I thought it would be somewhat like a typical Amish novel, but it certainly is something quite different... almost cult-like, in a way...

message 462: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) Bewildering is a good word to describe it! I was thinking of odd, peculiar and even bizarre. The way they separate the families and forbid them to see each other is the most bewildering part of it all to me.

I don't know which books you've read so far, so if you haven't read Cindy's The Hope of Refuge and The Bridge of Peace, you might want to hold off on reading The Harvest of Grace.

message 464: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Finally finished the book I was reading for English, Back by Henry Green, and once I've finished my history essay and handed it in I shall go back to reading Christmas Mail-Order Brides: Four Mail-Order Brides Travel the Transcontinental Railroad in Search of Love :) Then I aim to start Composing Amelia by Alison Strobel.

Diane U (djuseless) I am reading A Plain and Fancy Christmas by Cynthia Keller.

It's quite a different story about mixed up babies in the hospital 28 years ago! I can't wait to read how this works out!

Last night I started Naomi's Gift: an Amish Christmas Story by Amy Clipston. I shouldn't have had that third cup of coffee before the 1 hour + drive home from my daughter's concert -- 34% of the book read & wide awake at 3 A.M. -- and had to get up and go to work. But I'm loving the book!!

Reading Love Finds You under the Mistletoe. I finished the first story and I thought it was neat because I could really picture where it took place from. I live about 1 hour from Booneville, Ky and when I was an Extension Agent I had to travel to that county and sometimes we had meetings within the county and I heard people talking about Mistletoe. How neat is that! The first story was pretty good, now moving on to the second story which is a contemporary fiction.

I finished Naomi's Gift: an Amish Christmas Story by Amy Clipston a couple days ago & I really enjoyed it! Today I started reading A Log Cabin Christmas: 9 Historical Romances during American Pioneer Christmases while waiting for a meeting to start. I'm so glad it's warmer here that it was in the first story and no snow to be seen anywhere!

message 477: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I'm nearly finished A Log Cabin Christmas: 9 Nine Romances of American Pioneer Christmases, halfway through the second last story! After this I plan to read The Shadow of Your Smile by Susan May Warren. I know, taking a break from Christmas books! But the cover looks wintery :)

message 478: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Okay, I've now finished The Shadow of Your Smile and started An Amish Christmas by Patricia Davids which, I'd forgotten, is also about someone with amnesia!

I finished An Amish Christmas by Patricia Davids while on our way to my in-laws. While we've been here, I've started & finished her The Christmas Quilt. Now I'm working on A Plain and Fancy Christmas by Cynthia Keller.

We were supposed to leave yesterday, but have car trouble & they couldn't look at it until this morning.

I wonder if Keller is planning to write a sequel. I would love to hear more about Rachel Yoder, as well as hearing more from this author.

Paula-O (kyflo130) | 119 comments Camille I read Levi's Will and was first book of Dale Cramer I had ever read but now want to read more, it is a great story.
I am now re-reading Cindy Woodsmall trilogy "Sisters of the Quilt," story about Hannah Lapp, I still cry at how they treated this young girl and how she had to struggle so in her life.

I just finished Katie's Redemption and loved it! It reminded me of an earlier Beverly Lewis novel. I borrowed it from Amazon with my free Amazon Prime month trial. It said I could check out another book on Jan 1, since you can only check one book out a month. We will see and then I will check out the next book in the series The Doctor's Blessing

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Right now I'm reading The Merchant's Daughter by Melanie Dickerson and really enjoying it. Not sure what I'll read once I'm finished, only have about 30 pages left.

message 490: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) I am reading The Keeper: A Novel by Suzanne Woods Fisher in paperback for Baker Publishing. It is always weird to read a paper book every now and then instead of the kindle.

message 491: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I finished The Merchant's Daughter by Melanie Dickerson and now I'm listening to To Win Her Heart by Karen Witemeyer on audiobook. I need to finish up a couple of books for English that I'm partway through reading before I start a new book for fun! Shall attempt to finish Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh tonight. My fiance gave me the cutest bath bomb shaped like a cupcake with a snowman on it, so I plan to have a nice, relaxing bath and get some reading done with a paperback (not my Kindle in the bath!!)

I've read all but the final book in that series and have to say that Plain Promise was my ultimate favourite!

& I'm with Camille, Sarah's Garden is a great book too, and the second book in the series is even better :)

Right now I'm attempting to finish a couple of books for university before my English exam on the 17th. I've been struggling through The Heat of the Day by Elizabeth Bowen and ultimately it keeps putting me to sleep, the descriptions are just too dense and tangential. So I've switched over to a non-fiction book, A Pacifist's War by Frances Partridge. And I'm about 1/3 of the way through To Win Her Heart by Karen Witemeyer which I'm listening to on audiobook while I do housework.
