RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Interesting story this morning on NPR about a small press giving away their books for donations...

What do you think? This reminds me of that Panera experiment we discussed a couple months back (which is working, from what I understand) and Radiohead allowing their fans to pay however much they wanted to download their last disc.

Seems like a bad business plan to me.

Brittomart According to a friend, Radiohead said they're never doing that again.

Pat (patb37) I heard the story on NPR, and then checked out the site.

It looks like they have 1 free title at a time, and give away a limited number of copies each day.

I agree with Jim - seems like a bad business plan to me.

Why are people calling it a business plan? It's a charity. They have extremely low overhead, they solicit donations, writers and designers donate their services free, they sell merchandisey stuff in their online store. I don't know why they would fail sooner than any other charity.

Pat (patb37) They are not a charity, they are a non-profit organization that encourages people to donate to charity.
Non profit organizations fail all the time.

Its not that I want them to fail, I think its a noble idea. I'm just not convinced that it is sustainable.

Where did I say they wouldn't fail, ever?
