This chapter, for me, highlights the difficulty of appreciating beautiful code without having some familiarity with the domain. In the case of bioinformatics, I have no background, so I read lightly. Perl would not have been my first choice for a data and graphics intensive application, but it seems to have served this application well. It was interesting to see the evolution of the GUI requirements (and even publication-quality graphics). I do agree that Ajax would be a nice next step to meet the browser client demands.

The introduction to bioinformatics was nice too eventhough this chapter was mostly about a GUI. Looks like the next chapter might be more bioinformatics topics, so the introduction from this chapter will have been helpful for the next chapter too.I found the introduction to perl syntax section useful, because I'm not familiar with perl.
