Oh now that is just not fair! ;-)
Gatorman, how did you guess that so fast?

A former co-worker who knew I read a lot was a Barnes fan and would tell me about the Carlyle books to try to get me to read them. The Boston PI/former cop thing stuck in my head so I took a guess.

1. I work for the FBI.
2. Most would say I am rather eccentric and like to play by my own rules.

this is not ringing any bells with me!

4. I was married but my wife was murdered while on a safari.

I didn't think that would work but you are right! I'll see if someone who has actually read the books can recognize it.

There you go! Nice job! I thought it would be solved after the third clue. I guess it's your turn, Jan.

This sounds like an intriguing series, will look it up. I found the answer on wikipedia, interestingly enough, but that felt a little like "cheating." Although when I post clues I don't care how people find them!
I'll just quickly jump in :)
1) I am a PI in California.
2) My appearance doesn't matter much to me, but my fitness does - I combine many running miles with a love for junk food.
3) My parents died when I was a young child.

It doesn't bother me if someone resorts to research and I think perhaps there aren't as many people playing so the contests might stall out if someone doesn't step in with a solve?
That being said, I'm about tapped out on my stash of characters for potential fodder, so I can't afford to solve any more! :-)

Thanks, Jan C and T, for your comments. I agree with both of you. I will wait for a few more clues to see if someone else gets it without "research" before I guess.

That was my guess, too, but I got it by Googling."
Oh, silly me! I did it the old fashioned way by reading the books.

Agreed, Scout. I guess we just have to balance the two so everyone gets a shot at having their fun.

Sorry to be back so late! Jan C., you are right so if you would start a new one...
I agree on the Sidetracked Goole Discussion btw :) - there are just so many books not read yet and I love doing some online detective work from time to time!

2. My wife teaches English literature.
3. My boss' secretary is a whiz on the computer and frequently advises me that it is better not to ask.
4. I work for the police department.

For myself, and someone else said it, I will Google if I can't figure it out and there are some good meaty google-able clues. If I haven't read the books I might wait a bit to give someone whose read them a chance to guess. That seems more legit to me, but that's my preference, not intended to drive anyone else's posting. If no one is getting it I'll offer my googled answer.

Sounds like Jesse Stone, but he is on the list of protaganists already guessed.
