A former co-worker who knew I read a lot was a Barnes fan and would tell me about the Carlyle books to try to get me to read them. The Boston PI/former cop thing stuck in my head so I took a guess.

This sounds like an intriguing series, will look it up. I found the answer on wikipedia, interestingly enough, but that felt a little like "cheating." Although when I post clues I don't care how people find them!

A question for all. Do you think that finding the answer to the clues by using Google is "cheating" and that the only people giving guesses should be those who have actually read the books of the guessed protaganist? Personally, it does not matter to me how people guess from my clues but I am curious as to the opinions of the rest. Any thoughts?
I think that if you google when there aren't many clues then it may be. But if there are a number of clues then I don't think it is a problem. But I feel like you should wait a bit. Maybe that's just me.
Hi Gatorman....I'm guilty of the Google trick when I'm stumped...I guess the good side of it is that we learn a bit more about the characters and series by doing the research, and may get hooked into finding another author/character to dig into. I know I have. It doesn't bother me if someone resorts to research and I think perhaps there aren't as many people playing so the contests might stall out if someone doesn't step in with a solve?
That being said, I'm about tapped out on my stash of characters for potential fodder, so I can't afford to solve any more! :-)

I agree with both of you. I will wait for a few more clues to see if someone else gets it without "research" before I guess.
I only google when there's a specific clue that would be good to google on. Most clues are far too vague for me to even attempt it!!! And then it's normally when there's lots of clues and no-one seems able to guess it.

Gatorman, I've wondered, too, about the Googling thing. What're you gonna do, though? Asking people not to Google will just drive them underground with the pot smokers:) Not that there's anything wrong with that:) Seriously, it just makes you feel better to get one on the merits of your reading, but playing detective on the net is OK, too. It's just a game, and having fun is the thing.

Just to weigh in on the Google thing... I have my own views on whether I want to offer my Googled result, but I don't mind if others proceed differently.For myself, and someone else said it, I will Google if I can't figure it out and there are some good meaty google-able clues. If I haven't read the books I might wait a bit to give someone whose read them a chance to guess. That seems more legit to me, but that's my preference, not intended to drive anyone else's posting. If no one is getting it I'll offer my googled answer.
