Hey Laura - sorry I couldn't vote with you for The Brothers K. If you're not reading it yet, I would read it with you. It would be a reread for me, but I really enjoyed it the first time, and it's been quite a while. Or I would vote for it for next chunky read. :)

We can definitely make this one of the next Chunky reads. I think we will be reading all of the nominations.
Thx Annie! Wow the chunkys sure are growing and changing, aren't they? ((((((Chunkys))))))Is it weird I suddenly got a chocolate craving?

I saw this on the latest GR newsletter and though of my fellow chunky chicks. Interesting list maybe some ideas for future reads.

Wow, I'm so excited how the Chunky Reads have expanded. I started out reading them and you picked a couple I read. I read GWTW a couple years ago and loved, loved, loved it. I can't wait to read everyone's comments. I might have to read along with MD. Sounds like you have some books lined up in the future I'd love to read. I have all these chunky book that I'd like to read and it's great reading them with a group.
I am new to goodreads, and immediately stumbled into this group & the Chunky Reads and (be still my heart) GWTW. I seem always to be the lone voice in the room defending the greatness of this (historical) novel. I've read it several times, and will use this excuse to read it again.Once, years and years ago, I re-read it after having read an editorial by the then current Managing Editor of Time magazine... who also complained about being the single voice in the room championing GWTW. He stated flatly that it was possibly the best account of the Civil War he had ever read.
As if this wasn't enough serendipity, I have recently been yo-yo-ing back and forth with the idea of re-reading Moby Dick (read it for high school & don't remember a thing), and wishing I had someone to talk to about it... and now here you are you lovely ladies, you fabulous chicks, fulfilling all my dreams...
Welcome Janice! Glad you're joining us and good to hear how much you enjoy GWTW. Makes me look forward to the read even more!
I read the book a couple of months ago. I read the first 250 pages and then took a break and read something else. When I came back to it, I finished it in 2 days! Loved it so much, I went and rented the movie right away. The special features in the movie were priceless. But be aware, that a lot is cut in the movie.A couple of quotes from Scarlett are unforgettable.
I thought about all of you last night. My local used bookstore has an ARC of Fall of Giants for sale at $25.

I'm reading The Brothers Karamazov right now. I'm about 1/3 of the way into it. Have you started?
My copy of GWTW just arrived at the library so I think I'm all set to try my first ever chunky read - hope it's ok to join you!
Em wrote: "My copy of GWTW just arrived at the library so I think I'm all set to try my first ever chunky read - hope it's ok to join you!"Hi Em! It will be my first chunky read also! :) My copy of GWTW hasn't come in yet, but I just picked up Moby Dick yesterday.
Of course it's okay to join us Em! We're not going to be starting the read and discussion for GWTW until October 1st so you'll be well ahead of the game!
Thanks Jo, well I will be picking it up from the library this week but I very much doubt I'll get started much before the start of Oct (still got a couple of books to finish first.) I've wanted to read this one for ages so looking forward to it!
I'd like to join in the discussion for Moby Dick. When will there be a breakdown of our weekly readings? I'll probably need to get a head start.
Hey all! Reminder: Gone With The Wind begins 10/1! Just wanted to pop in and let our Gone With The Wind readers know that I'll be posting the reading & discussion schedule one day next week towards the middle/end of the week. Looking forward to 10/1 and discussing this classic with you!
OH!!!! I want to join in on GWTW!! I have read this one many times.... on my 4th copy of the book... have worn them all out!!!
Great Kat! The more the merrier! (And good to know, this is my first read of GWTW - I know, hard to believe coming from someone who loves southern lit, lol!)

(hangs head in utter shame)Yes, it is. I don't know how I've never read it! Nor have I ever seen the movie!
(ducks, avoiding rocks being thrown at head)

haha!! You have truly been sheltered!!! Once you read it, AND see the movie, most other southern lit won't compare.

Actually, I was sheltered as a child, my mom was very over protective... Oh, heh hum... Where did that come from? :-) So far I'm enjoying it!
LOL
Nope, haven't seen the movie but may (or may not) after I'm finished reading the novel, depending on how I like it once I'm done. I love reading Civil War era fiction, historical fiction and nonfiction! Fascinates me.
Civil War history bored me when I was young but after I first saw Ken Burns' Civil War in my early 20s (which I still love) I was hooked. And I love southern lit, have since I first read To Kill a Mockingbird freshman year of high school.
My 22 yo daughter is a GWTW fan. Her birthday was this week and I had bought her a copy of
The Authentic South of Gone With the Wind: The Illustrated Guide to the Grandeur of a Lost Era by Bruce Wexler It has such fascinating history, that I had to order myself a copy.
Looks like a great book Nancy! Thanks for mentioning it. I may have to see if the library can get a hold of this for me.
So the next chunky read is Gone with the Wind? When do we start?(Sorry I am SO far behind... I just moved and got my internet back! I feel so.... connected. *lol*)
GWTW starts 10/1. I'll be posting the reading & discussion schedule later this week.Hope the move went smoothly Kristin!
I loved the movie and felt it stayed pretty close to the form of the book. I think Mitchell demanded that it be so. Huh! Clark Gable short wow, what a disappointment. I had heard the same thing about Kirk Douglas too! Vivien Leigh was just gorgeous and apparently they had massive screen tests for all the Hollywood stars who wanted a go at this role. She was the perfect Scarlet, I think. Only book Mitchell ever wrote. I guess after GWTW, she was set for life ott perhaps she knew she would never be able to top that one!

Hey GWTW readers, I've posted the discussion & reading schedule --> http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/4... (the thread is going to be closed to comments to help us to not discuss the novel before the start date of 10/1).Discussion will begin on 10/1 with discussing chapters 1-6 so you can start reading now!
I have read GWTW many times and it is also one of my favorite movies - so I will join in on the discussion.
Hopefully I can get all my other reading finished so I can join in on this read with you ladies! I have been meaning to read GWTW for ages. Loved the movie, loved Clark Gable too :)
Wow, I was really surprised to get the email that we'll be reading GWTW... I just read it like 2 years ago, but since there's wonderful discussion bits to help dissect the book, I think I'll go dig my copy out!
Xeni. I was surprised as well. I read GWTW earlier this year for the first time and enjoyed it so much. I will probably join in the discussion as well :)
I just checked out my copy of GWTW today! I'm excited to read this classic - although that is ONE CHUNKY BOOK. :)In Moby-Dick chunky read news...Meg offered to let MD start at the end of November so that everyone who wanted to participate in GWTW could without having to read TWO chunkies at the same time. Maybe that's just me, but I took it.
I'm getting settled in to our new home in northern Cali, but I've got my copy of MD out and will get reading schedule up soon.
