We're writing an article that we're publishing in a US magazine, the topic is "Are Chinese characters too hard for foreigners?", so any help from this group will be more than welcome.

I've lived in China for over 4 years. Because of the interest I've had in the Chinese culture for a long time, I set up a group to write and publish books about China.

Our latest book is called Chinese Without Tears, which aims to teach foreigners the most basic and useful Chinese characters. Our approach is pretty unique as for most part of the book, it teaches only characters without the sound, which makes it much easier for learner to get the hold of them.

We believe that this is the reason why most foreigners think it's TOO HARD to learn Chinese characters. If they learned first a set of 100-200 characters, then the corresponding sounds, it would be much easier to go on with learning Chinese.

My questions in this group are:
(1)- Do you have experience with such teaching methods?
(2)- How important do you think learning Chinese characters is in the process of learning Mandarin/Chinese?

Thank you.
