How to run it correctly? I don't like it either, but the general impression I get is that if you turn it on it cools down the room.
Is the question "how to run an air conditioner efficiently?" or something else? I didn't mean to mock your question if it's a real one.
Sweeter says that it is "too hard on the machine" to run it in the afternoon. I don't get that. When should I turn it on then? Right now it is nice and cool out. I want fresh air!
Turn it on once the sun sets or slightly before so the damn thing doesn't run so much and the house will cool overnight.
You turn it on. You crank it as high as it can go. You leave it on until it's cold out. Mission accomplished:)

The idea is to cool the house gradually - with periods where the A/C doesn't run continuously for hours on end, but rather comes on and turns off at regular intervals. That way you don't rack up a monster electric bill, like the one I had last month.
Unless you're on some sort of budget set-up with your energy provider whereby you pay the same amount every month regardless of usage. In that case, run it at will.

I do a little of both. I run the AC in the room where I sleep, and where the kids sleep, but I leave the windows open through the rest of the house.

Yes, once you get it to the desired temperature, leave it. The tricky part is getting it there without breaking the bank.

Me too. I even like to occasionally crack a window at night during the winter, but I can't sleep when it's too hot. The humidity around here for the past few weeks has been ridiculous.

I'm learning that we dress our children different too.
Leah has Matt's thermostat, which is hard for me to figure. he comes home from work, takes off his shirt, takes off hers, closes the windows/doors, and then walks around with her in the blasting cold.
I just want to chase them around with a blanket but she seems happy either way.

my house has an evaporative cooler. it works fine because we have such a dry climate. I have to leave a door/window open to create the vacuum needed for it to work effectively. It costs almost nothing to run, so I just have it cranking all summer!
A/C Operation: fill ice cube tray with water. leave on coffee table. turn on a/c. keep turning down temp until water becomes solid. sit. enjoy
i don't think extreme a/c is for everyone.and i'm in the open doors/windows, let the air run through club.
i know in IN the humidity in the summer is brutal especially with all the rain we have been getting and a/c is welcome

I'd more than welcome fall right about now.

barb - after spending much time in countries where they do not use or have a/c i would have to agree. sitting in a cafe eating your food in 95 degree heat and 90% humidity is not so bad if there is no alternative. much of it is a state of mind.but since i can have the cool air, i am using it

I'd be better able to judge if I should be afraid if I had any clue who that was ... maybe he's a sweet old grandpa..."

I'm an idiot for assuming you followed hockey, aren't I? All apologies...

Leaving windows open in my neighborhood is NOT an option... plus ours are painted shut. We leave the AC on auto (always on auto, not "on") at 74 during the day. Then around 8:30pm, we'll turn it down to 72. I wish we had the sort of weather that could allow for open windows (or the windows that allowed for open windows, for that matter), but we don't. I can live with the AC. It's nice to be able to breathe in this oppressive heat. :)
We have two thermostats for the house (two furnaces, two air conditioners), and both are set for 78 degrees during the day, then OFF at night.I love to open the windows when I can at night, but it hasn't been below 85, even at night, for more than a week. It will likely be another 10 or so days before we can get back to the more natural method of cooling -- open windows & doors.
Oh, I forgot to add... ceiling fans are a must! The AC will cool off the air, but the fan will cool the people.
My next home will be in a safe area where I can sleep with the windows open if I want. :) I'm already dreaming big.
Even Nick's house in New Orleans had widows that opened for nice winter evenings.

also Excel Energy might have some resources since they give you a rebate for buying/installing a system.

OHHH MY HEAVENS!!! I miss that in a baaad way. When I lived on Pearl Street here, we had some neighbors who moved here from NO and they had night-blooming jasmine on their iron gate. I'd take Robby for lots of late night walks just to squeeze in some extra sniffs... and then I'd wake up wicked early to squeeze in a few more before getting ready for work.
