By this point, even though I knew that the abdication of the throne was inevitable I was still immensely frustrated with Nicholas, but even more so with Alexandra. I would love to take a look at one of her letters- Massie seems to defend Alexandra by claiming her writing style made her appear less sane than she really was...it really makes one wonder however.
Their relationship reminds me a lot of Charles I and Henrietta Maria in England. Both couples seemed wonderful and loving as regular people, but they seemed so out of touch with the realities of their situation as leaders.
Given what Nicholas had gone through as a child (his grandfather's assassination and the Borko incident) I'd say that he was a prime candidate for a good case of PTSD. Alexandra, the same what with loosing her mother and several siblings as a child. I think both of them coped by trying to isolate themselves into what was a 'safe' place for them -- sadly, Russia was going through too many changes for either of them to keep up. It could be that no one would have been able to stop the Revolution from occurring.
