SOLVED. Military science fiction novel - war on Alpha Centauri (?) [s]

It was an adult military science fiction novel, somewhat similar to Starship Troopers in tone. The protagonists go through basic training, then go to fight a war in another star system, which I THINK was Alpha Centauri. As I recall, the aliens were never really described much, nor was the reason for the war. There was one scene in which one of the trainees died by falling under a tank's treads. I also vaguely recall there was a sequel.

There are a lot of military Sci-Fi books out there. Many with somewhat similar events occuring. Do you remember about when you read it? And was it new or older at that time?

It would have been somewhere around 1993-1995 or thereabouts, and I think it was a relatively new book at the time.

Hum, ok, then I don't think its the one that I was thinking of. That didn't come out til after Y2K. And it was a series.

Nope, that's not it, this was a much more recent book. (But thanks for reminding me of another book I read long ago that I'd forgotten about!)

Could it be by John Steakley? It sounds somewhat like one by him called "Armor".

Hmm... a little closer, but no, this isn't it. I wish I could remember more details. I think the weapons the troops used were not terribly futuristic -- no powered armor, no beam weapons.

I was thinking Robert Heinlein but I saw you mentioned Starship Troopers so that's not it. I have some books like this stored away, I'll dig them out and see. I think I know at least the author but i can't quite place it.

This came out in '74, but still, could it be "The Forever War" by Joe Haldeman?
