Taueret | 58 comments Something new on Audible.com, I started listening to it today. It's sword, not laser, and published only in audio format. The reader affects an accent that makes me grit my teeth, but that's probably just me. If I didn't know it was acting (you hear her real accent at the beginning when she introduces the book) it wouldn't bother me at all, so I am probably wierd.

Here's a link, but I think it probably goes to the Australian audible store, fwiw.

aldenoneil | 1000 comments It'd be interesting to hear a Bacigalupi novel in a different world than Windup Girl. Let us know how it is.

AND - maybe the reader was affecting an accent in the beginning. :)

Very interesting, both that's it two science fiction authors trying out fantasy, and that's it audio-only. I'll probably give it a shot, but I may skip the intro to avoid that accent-disconnect. ;)

Taueret | 58 comments I finished listening to it a couple of days ago. It drew me in much more than I thought it would early on. I'm not much of a fantasy reader beyond some of the old favourites so it would be interesting to hear what a fantasy fan would say about it.

I liked the way the writers used magic as a metaphor for environmental pollution, similar to the way karmic pollution in a closed system was a theme in the Windup Girl, I guess. Overall I enjoyed it. Left the door open for a sequel, but one is not necessary. I'd recommend a listen, worth the price.

Tom Hansen (scarhoof) Are those two books available in book/kindle format? I can't seem to find them. I don't have an audible account.

Taueret | 58 comments It's one book, apologies for lazy punctuation. " The Alchemist and the Executioness". I believe it's audio only. It was pretty cheap, you could buy it as a one-off (instead of subscribing to Audible). I did that even though I subscribe because I didn't want to spend a whole credit on a $6.95 book. Definitely worth what I paid though.

Sandi (sandikal) | 1212 comments I finished listening to the stories yesterday. Wow. What a pair of stories and what a pair of talented writers.

The narrator of the Bacigalupi story is kind of hit-or-miss with me. He always seems to be the narrator on books I want to listen to. I think he narrated The Windup Girl quite well, but I've heard him narrate some clunkers. I thought he did a good job on this story. I really loved the narrator of the Buckell story and will be looking for more of her narrations.

Especially since I've read both authors.

Otto (andrewlinke) | 110 comments I've got this book downloaded, just need to finish Quicksilver before I dive into it. Good to hear that it should be good.
