The July meeting ran long because this book brought up so many topics of Christianity and witness in a pagan world both long ago and now, but also because it is just great fun to read. It has romance, tawdry pageantry, colorful villains (oh Chilon ...), detached observers (Petronius, how I love your sarcasm), and more.

I don't know about anyone else but the vivid portrayal of the burning of Rome has held me enthralled. There is clear foreshadowing of Rome being burned from the moment we meet Nero so it is not a spoiler to comment that I had never given any thought to the complete chaos that would ensue from attempting to flee a burning city ...
