While I admire his enthusiasm, I think he needs a better strategy.

ms.petra (mspetra) that seems somewhat harsh for the crime...

janine | 7709 comments such love for books!

Hours after the arrest, Wilkins was “perp-rolled” out of the 78th Precinct stationhouse, strapped to a rolling chair and awaiting a mental health evaluation.

does that mean love for books = crazy person?

message 5: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) I wonder which books he stole.

Brittomart I want to know the titles of the books he stole. I guess someone really latched onto this Stieg Larsson craze.

Those were bad ideas, who'd a thunk it? :-)

Agreed. Hitting a New York City police officer is basically a way of attempting suicide by proxy.

Lori And he's a danger on the street, the guy can't drive!

I'm amused this is Bklyn. And I'd also like to know what books he grabbed.

message 12: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Well, most native New Yorkers can't drive, so he's not that unusual.

No idea which books he stole, but about ten years ago, there was an article in the Times about the books most frequently stolen from the Union Square branch of B&N in Manhattan.

The absolute number one author of choice among book-loving shoplifters was Charles Bukowski. Other popular ones included Paul Auster, William S. Burroughs, Raymond Chandler, Jack Kerouac, and J.D. Salinger.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I can tell you that the popular books for thieves at the library include mushroom field guides, and books on tattoo art. Oh, and witchcraft and divorce.

I just glanced at this thread title and I thought it said "Barnes and Noble runs out." of books? hahaha.

message 15: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I wonder if the divorce books are because people check them out and move away. Or do you mean they just disappear from the shelves?

Why didn't this guy go to the library, come to think of it?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments The divorce books just disappear, AND they get checked out and never returned. That happens with a lot of the test guides too, like the ASVAB.

message 17: by Lori (new)

Lori Divorce I can see, just because it's so common. Even tattoo books somewhat. But mushroom guides? They're so high from the shrooms they're finding that they can't get a job to make money?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I don't know, Lori. Maybe they have too many fines on their library cards from being too high to remember to return things on time. :)

message 19: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (samhanson) Surely, there must be libraries in New York.

But how many fines could that possibly be? What is the highest balance you've ever seen on a user's account?

Yeah, it does. At least they didn't tase him.

message 22: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Don't tase me, bro!

These people didn't survive it:

87 year old woman in Oregon

Another Oregonian

A guy in the next town

etc., etc., etc.

Sickening. Tasing needs to be outlawed.

That 87 year old woman was brandishing a pellet gun, not a handgun. How do you taze an 87 year old woman? Someone's going to taze a 9 months pregnant woman and her fetus next. If people think this is acceptable there is something deeply wrong with them.

Lobstergirl | 24778 comments Mod
I remember that. It was revolting. And the man's mother was at the airport to pick him up - she wasn't present to view the tasing, she found out later that as she was waiting, he was being killed. Can you imagine??

message 25: by BK (new)

BK Blue (paradoxically) | 56 comments "Grand Theft Auto" style. Too funny.

message 26: by Agathafrye (new)

Agathafrye | 17 comments Jackie, you forgot the books on sex and astrology. Also, it's a hopeless endeavor to keep the Anarchist Cookbook on the shelves in any library.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Oh, heck yeah! There are never any astrology books on the shelves!

The puberty books are there, though! I guess sex info is different when it comes to youth services, compared to adult reference. No one feels the need to steal a book about starting your period. :)

message 28: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Why do think people steal such different books from libraries (astrology, witchcraft, the Anarchist Cookbook, etc.) than from bookstores (male hipster fiction, mostly)?

It seems odd, but probably there's a reason for it.

message 29: by Agathafrye (new)

Agathafrye | 17 comments Seems ripe for a study.

Rachel | 1106 comments Maybe the guy was looking for something in one of the books?
