Sherry Back in the day when I was a working Mom(and even when I wasn't working)I HAD to have some me time seperate from my family in order to feel rejuvenated and energized to continue to be a loving and patient mom.

What are some of the ways you get rejuenated and energized?

I use to paint. For the hour that I was painting, unless the house was on fire I was not to be disturbed. Now I visit the bookstore or buy a purse,I looove purses!

Gary Shiebler | 1 comments Hi all,

Since I can't watch television anymore without getting a migraine, I've decided to replace that time by catching up and re-reading some of my faves. First up is "Desert Solitaire" by Edward Abbey. Funny, irreverent and beautifully written, Abbey is one of our true American treasures. Books like "Desert Solitaire" and "The Monkey Wrench Gang" inspired me to become a writer. I can't think of a greater tribute to a scribe than that...

message 3: by Santina (new)

Santina (littlesaintina) | 76 comments LOL...I often go to the book store for peace, I love the purse thing. That is so funny, I can't afford the purses I want, but they're nice to look at. I have too many "bags" they're call by my husband...haha.

Do you still paint Sherry? I wish I knew how it's so relaxing.

Hi Gary, nice of you to join the group!
I hope that you have a chance to check out our threads and share a bit of yourself with the group....

This is a great place to be for a lover of books (or I suppose, in your case, also a Writer of Books....), and as I see you have no books on your shelf (yet) I do want to warn you, it will soon overflow with tons of to-reads.....

message 5: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Not as much as I used to.I broke my elbow and damaged the tendon on my right index finger,it was devastating at the time.I broke it playing what time is it Mr. Wolf with the After school kids in the gym if you can believe it!I used to invent different ways it happened but nothing topped the truth.
I had gotten pretty good for an amateur, even sold a little but it's hard to go back to square one when you were doing so much better than that.

I've bought some patterns and paint to get some projects going again(soon as the renos are done in the family room)but the best way is to just play with the paint and see what it can do.So much fun when you don't stress.

message 6: by Santina (new)

Santina (littlesaintina) | 76 comments well I don't know if I should feel sorry, or laugh about how you did it. Seriously though that sucks that it took away your painting, but good that you found a way to deal with it. I think painting it just good for everyone.

When my daughter was still in a highchair, I used to give her construction paper with a cup of water and a paint brush, she loved it. Then later I found these buddah boards...same thing, only they drive much faster. It must be something about the movement of it.

message 7: by Sherry (new)

Sherry It can berelly fun, just swishing the paint on the brush and on the surface you're painting on.I can see why kids love it.When you see that if you do something this way or that it can pruduce interesting effects.I loved it and would hate to think I lost that feeling because I was to much of a wus to try again.

It was a funny and weird way to break one's arm,I didn't think that playing children's games could be so hazardous!

message 8: by Shea (new)

Shea Shopping-ALONE...for pretty much anything, but I too LOVE purses. Purses are so much more interesting than shoes. I hate any shoes that aren't comfortable so that rules out most of the interesting looking ones. I can even be shopping for groceries but if no one is asking me a million questions or second guessing my every decision I am relaxed.

message 9: by Sherry (new)

Sherry *LOL* or hurry up,we gotta get home!

Mona | 52 comments I read, I write in my journal, I take long walks with our dog, I write letters to friends I haven't talked to in a while, I call a friend and have a good conversation on the phone, I listen to music on my I-pod, I take pictures, I look through my new recipes and try and cook something new for my family.... all these hobbies relax and rejuvenate me and make me a more patient, loving mom.

message 13: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda (icedcap) I sit out on my deck and read or just sit and watch the birds or take a nice long walk with hubby and dogs. It gives us time together plus time to discuss our kids or anything else happening in our life.

message 14: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 25 comments One of the things that actually "rejuvinates" me in a way is actually spending time one on one with my kids. Truly committing to them, not taking 10 mins in between loads of laundry and dishes. I work shifts and have a long commute, so I often miss those moments, or I am just too distracted and make other things more important. When I give them my undivided attention, whether it be going for a walk with my daughter at HER speed, or take my oldest to a movie it just brings me back to what is really important. But I have to admit as well, grocery shopping solo is SWEET!!!

message 15: by Santina (new)

Santina (littlesaintina) | 76 comments I can't believe I'm going to admit this, but I recently bought a Nintendo Wii, and I have to say, it's so much fun. We bought Dance Dance Revolution, and I turn it on after my daughter goes to bed. I can justify that though, because it's fun, and it's exercise. I think I like it more than she does.

message 16: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda (icedcap) That sounds like fun and great exercise too! I hear that Nintendo Wii is pretty neat. My son's friend has it and they play when they have the time.

message 17: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 25 comments The Wii is AWESOME!!! My husband and I have gone on what we call "bowling dates!" lol!!! Put the kids to bed and turn on the Wii. Admittedly we are usually laughing so loud that at least one of them eventually wanders down. But it's a cheap date - no babysitter or shoe rentals :)

message 18: by Santina (new)

Santina (littlesaintina) | 76 comments oh yeah it's a lot of fun. I totally recommend Dance Dance Revolution...even for a laugh. The first time I tried it I looked like a drunk trying to dance. Good Fun.

message 19: by Mona (new)

Mona | 52 comments We went over to a friends' house earlier this year and we played the Wii. It was very fun!!! I love the bowling game. :) I LOVE the idea of bowling dates. How fun! :)

message 20: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 55 comments I don't know why, but I just discovered this thread. Anyway, I have several activities/rituals that help me recharge. I love to knit and I love to sew by hand - there is something meditative in both processes - kind of like counting the rosary of chanting or something! Ialso just love the first little chunk of the day when I am first up - sitting at the table with my toast and coffee and reading the news on the internet. It is a daily ritual that I need so much that I get really crabby if it is interrupted! Sometimes a little time away - reading or writing in a coffee shop while the hubby watches the kids - is all I need to reset my mechanism.

message 21: by Shea (new)

Shea I got some retail therapy yesterday. Since I just got back from a family vacation I haven't had any alone time (unless you count showers) in over a week. I went shopping yesterday all by my lonesome and it was nice. I spent a bunch of time at Kohl's trying on clearance clothes and there wasn't anyone to ask me how long it was going to take. Then I went to Lowe's to buy a new dishwasher. It was bad news that our old one died, but good news that I got a great deal on the new one and it fit in my VUE. Then I was off to Meijer for grocery shopping. While grocery shopping is not exciting it was necessary. Our cupboards were bare of perishables and my family doesn't do well without with milk. The vacation and time away from work has recharged my proffessional batteries. I am just about ready to go back to work tomorrow, well not really (-:

message 22: by Santina (new)

Santina (littlesaintina) | 76 comments Sounds great, the only retail I got this weekend, was fall clothes for the kid and fighting to find all the school supplies on her list. I love Khol's too bad I have to drive 2 hours to get to one.

message 23: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I had a dream of a retail week-end with new lingerie,a new purse and new books! These are a few of my favorite things.:)

message 24: by Shea (new)

Shea Ooohh. I LOVE purses! I looked but didn't find anything that jumped out at me. Luckily I am picky about my purses so I always look but rarely buy. We bought some books on vacation. I just browsed the clearance aisle and picked up a few that sounded interesting. My son started reading the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series and he has been choosing to read those instead of watch TV-YEAH.

message 25: by Santina (new)

Santina (littlesaintina) | 76 comments I find myself lately sitting at my kitchen table just starring out the window. I don't know why, there seems to be a lot of peace in the kitchen, that is when people aren't eating...lol.

It just relaxing to sit there, it's the only place in the house, everyone stays out of, unless they're hungry. It seems to relax me lately and we're lucky enough to have a view of some mountains so maybe that's what I find so relaxing.

message 26: by Molly (new)

Molly OHHH Shopping for Purses is sooooo fun I'll ususlly shop for about 2 months before i buy one my favorite right now is an Elliot Luca. I usually dont buy expensive purses. i try to buy things within my means., Which also rejuvenates me, I love getting unique and edgy things at like a thrift store for a few bucks. Painting my Toes rejuventates me....Having Fresh sheets on the bed.. The house being Clean when someone stops by unexpectedly. A Good new Cd always does the trick too. Recently got Pat Benetar at a garage sale for .50 It Was the best $$ i ever spent, I Blaired Heart Breaker For weeks everyone in the house knows it by heart now...
I like creating inside jokes with friends. for example, Right now all my friends young and old have the vegi-tales song " Barbara Manatee" stuck in their heads, Yep thats funny!!!! I'm smiling just thinking about it. ;)

message 27: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Awesome!!! Another purse lover (there can't be too many!)

message 28: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen (momof4boys) Purses don't get my pulse rate up but shoes! make-up! Books!

My biggest gripe living in Jakarta is they don't have the make-up brands I love like Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier, Nars, Benefit, Stila. Books are limited too and I can't just order on Amazon. Package might not reach destination (read: stolen in the mail)

I also love to bake. I bake when I'm happy, sad, tired, energized, calm, stressed. Thankfully there's no shortage of quality baking supplies here.

i just made a chocolate peanut butter truffle torte. Like a peanut butter cup for grown-ups, though my 4 boys love it too. Mmmmmm...

message 29: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne Hey Kathleen can I have the recipe?

Baking, shoes, yarn and books top my list but purses are important too!

Actually I love the grocery store! I love to go through all the aisles and create new meals as I go.

message 30: by Molly (new)

Molly I was actually wondering if u ladies wanted to start a recipe thread???

message 31: by Santina (new)

Santina (littlesaintina) | 76 comments Yeah a recipe thread...Great Idea.

I know I've said it before, but please start any thread you you think would be a good idea.

message 32: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne YAY!!!!!!! New recipes, great books and wonderful women!!!! This is heaven on earth!!!!!!

message 33: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen (momof4boys) Hi Suzanne! I usually eyeball it but I've put together a recipe and posted it under a new thread "Recipe Exchange"

Hope you like it.

C'mon ladies who love to cook, eat or both! Let's have them knockout recipes!

message 34: by L & D (new)

L & D I exercise (usually Jazzercise or walk the dog). I need the endorphins, plus I am still trying to lose weight (30lbs to go).

I do love to cook and bake as well, but baking doesn't help weight loss. :)

message 35: by Shea (new)

Shea I wish you continued success in your weight loss. Even without the weight loss it is great to be moving and getting that exercise anyway.

message 36: by Shea (new)

Shea Just read a great little book that is both inspirational and thought provoking for women/mothers. It is Anne Morrow Lindbergh's Gift From the Sea. I read it for my library book discussion group and really enjoyed it. I plan to read it a second time before we meet. I was hesitant to read it knowing that she had written it after her baby was kidnapped and murdered but she wrote it many years later and doesn't even go into her personal story. It is a little piece of philosophy but an easy read.

Literary Chanteuse I wanted to comment on Santina's post about just sitting in the kitchen and staring out the window.(even thought it was a long time ago) I do the same for some reason. We also have a view of mountains and it is very relaxing.

I've actually created a room for myself otherwise known as "Mommy's Room" which was formally the breakfast nook. It is off the kitchen with a sliding door to the balcony and view and it contains a chair, ottoman, floor lamp and end table which is for my book ( I am currently reading) and a cup of coffee or tea ( or stronger when I need it) and a throw blanket. I don't get a chance to use as often as I would like but I feel like I'm in a different world when I do.

Literary Chanteuse Thank you to Shea for the gift from the sea. I will add that to my list to read.

message 39: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Sounds wonderful Margaret, I think it's very important to have a special place all our own, even if we can't get there as often as we like...

Sounds good Shea, I'll be checking it out.

message 40: by Angela (new)

Angela (angbens) I read, garden, crochet, shoot my bow, go hunting, cook, workout...

message 41: by Kelli (new)

Kelli Bostwick I read (of course!) but my guilty pleasure is buying beauty products. I love Zia skin products and Aveda hair products. One of my favorite things to do is go to Marlene's (a natural food store by my house) get a smoothie or a veggie juice, and shop for face wash!
