Tish, I beg to differ you can turn off the Kindle. If you hold the slide button foe several seconds till the screen goes white. it doesn't turn back on. I know you stated that you are a Kindle support person, do you own one?
You're most welcome Linda. I can't wait to get mine. Even though it's not here yet I've been studying the manual so I'll know how to use it when it comes.

Yes I own one actually. I have a K3 so maybe you guys have a different model. Either way you're not supposed to turn it all the way off. I've never bothered trying to turn mine off because there's no point. And I know you're not supposed to anyway. As has already been stated, there's no need to turn it off in order to save battery power because it doesn't use the battery while in sleep mode.
I wouldn't leave it on sleep. I had been doing that and got up to use it yesterday and its broke. No longer works, won't switch on and reset doesnt work. When I get a new one I think I'll be turning it off.

Tish if it is true that you should never turn it off I think it's kind of strange that in the manual where it tells you how to turn it off it doesn't say "warning don't do it!"Also earlier you said it was not possible to turn it off, but the manual clearly states otherwise.

Thank god, I miss it already!

I was also wondering that. I read the complete manual when I got mine and don't remember any warning.
I have a K3. If you slide and hold the power button it goes to a blank screen, but if you then slide and release it comes on again immediately, the same as when you have the picture on the screen. So it would seem it is still just sleeping. But I am almost certain that when I got my kindle last September if I turned it off it took awhile to come back on again, as if the software was loading, and I have upgraded the software version since buying, to 3.0.3. So my guess is that this is something that has been changing. (Don't remember how I upgraded, but I think you have to do it online from Kindle Support.) However, tested my daughter's kindle as well, bought a couple months later, and it works the same way, has 3.0.2. However, turning off may have cancelled her wireless network as it was not there afterwards, although I did not check before. This does not happen with my kindle with 3.0.3. Sometimes after turning it off it flashes a few seconds later, so that my be the software reset Tish referred to earlier.
Turning off does seem to also turn off the wireless, which sleeping does not, as there is a delay for the connection to show when turned on again, which is likely why you have to do a turn off for planes, the blank screen being the reassurance the attendants would be looking for if they checked.
That brings up another point. people are posting that they are turning off thier wireless to save battery life. This will take several steps to turn off and back on. It is much simpler to turn the Kindle off if you aren't going to be reading gor a while. Karen
I'm always posting quotes to Facebook. I keep my Wireless on it is no big deal to plug it in to charge, I am trained by Apple to plug things in when I go to bed. I know at least one person bought a book because my quotes sounded interesting.

First, you set it up by providing your account login, then when ever you want to share a passage, you underline it, and hit alt return and a box pops up that you can put a comment in, then it prompts to post. All of your underlining also go to your cloud storage so later you can go back and easily look for what you saved. Karen
