message 601: by Katey (new)

Katey | 4 comments Why hello!

I'm Katey - 30ish elementary school teacher hailing from sunny Southern Florida.

Love reading voraciously (shocker), gaming, and playing with my toddler.

Especially love these summer months when I am free from work and have MUCH more time to indulge in the above.

Favorite books/series include the usual suspects: Tokein's world, Harry Potter's world, and I wait in anticipation for the next instalments of A Song of Ice and Fire: A Game of Thrones / A Clash of Kings / A Storm of Swords / A Feast for Crows and The Name of the Wind

Currently reading Robin Hobb Collection: Assassin's Apprentice, Royal Assassin, Assassin's Quest - am appreciating her tale, but the thievery doesn't match the quality I loved in The Lies of Locke Lamora or The Way of Shadows

Maybe I'll be surprised, am only 1/2 way through book 2.

Anyway - glad to meet everyone!

Ken (kenzen) Hi,

I'm Ken. I'm from Europe, living and working in the Netherlands. I bought the Sony eReader as soon as it was available and since then I have upgraded to a Galaxy Tab with the Kindle and Kobo apps and Mantano for every other book.

Right now I am reading the Fionavar Tapestry. After that I have a read-through of the Malazan series scheduled. With some scifi thrown in every now and then.

Ken (kanthr) | 165 comments I really liked that one. It started off somewhat average, but really picked up. One of Kay's best.

message 604: by Colin (new)

Colin (mobewan) | 10 comments Hi, I’m Col and I read. Mainly SciFi, Fantasy and variations of. But will generally pick up anything if it’s well written and engaging. Started when my Dad handed me Magician by Raymond Feist and I then swiftly devoured every book my Dad owned. I’m also trying to write something I’d enjoy reading. So far a few short stories on smashwords and have a few “irons in the pan”, but it’s safe to say I’m building my skills up through doing - I’m not a natural writer, never have been, but the journey I’m on at the moment is a lot of fun.

Due to small children, time consuming job (IT Manager. Yes, it is as exciting as it sounds), mountain biking, falls off mountain bikes and general hustle and bustle of family life, I don’t get to do as much reading and writing as I’d like. One day though…

New to GR and thought this group looked like one I’d have many things in common with plus the discussions on the message boards seemed some of the most interesting and sensibly debated. Looking forward to fun times :-)

message 605: by John (new)

John | 1 comments Hi all! I'm John. Originally from Brooklyn, now live in NJ. I work in NYC in the IT dept of a bank (Project Manager). I used my commuting time to devour whatever I can on the Kindle reader. I am a fan of JRR Tolkien, JK Rowlings, David Gemmell, Eddings, Robert Jordan, GRR Martin. I will read just about anything, really. Since I've gotten the Kindle, I've been into a lot of the classics. Alexandre Dumas is now one of my favorite authors. The Count of Monte Cristo is truly a classic. I love a good paranormal story as well.
I've come across some great authors on GR's that I probably would never have read if not for this site. I'm glad to be here! Look forward to future discussions! Friend me and any recommendations are welcome!

message 607: by Alexander (new)

Alexander Scotchfield (scotchfield) Hi there! I'm a 33 year old guy from Southern Ontario in Canada, currently employed as a postdoc at a university here. I work in software analysis, and came back to academia after a four-year stint in industry.
I'm a big fantasy/sci-fi fan, although I confess to a passion for horror as well.
Like many of the other posters above, I have a job, a family (with kids), and therefore a lack of free time. However, there's always time to be found if you look hard enough. Reading books along with a group of other enthusiasts sounds like a great idea. :)
Thanks for hosting such a great group!

Kenny Chaffin (kennychaffin) | 96 comments Welcome Alexander.

message 609: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (mkc2192) Hello! My name is Melissa and I'm from a small town in Wisconsin where everybody knows everybody and it's hard to keep secrets. I'm married and have one son who just entered into his 'terrible twos' phase.

I have two sisters that are also bookworms and one loves manga and the other is very into sci-fi. They give me recommendations all the time and keep me interested in trying out different kinds of books that I probably wouldn't have picked out on my own.

I own a kindle and have about 40 books downloaded into it. I don't read with it very often, but I do use it when traveling. I have a small collection of books in my home because I still use the library and that's where I get most of my books from. I expecially love when they get rid of extra books and sell them for a $1 a book. I know, I'm cheap. :P

I love sci/fi fantasy, young adult, crime, thriller, horror, mystery, and comedy genres and I'm big on anything having to do with zombies, alternate dimensions and time travel.

And that's all folks!!! :)

message 610: by Kenny (new)

Kenny Chaffin (kennychaffin) | 96 comments Well see the good thing about a Kindle is that in a small town no one can tell what you are reading, like they can with those romances. :)

Welcome!

message 611: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 09, 2013 10:57AM) (new)

Hello everybody :D
I am a digital artist & graphic designer, and started writing art books since last year.

When I have some free time, I like writing the stories of my characters. I just started a series of short stories called "Stories of Duskland", and the first one is just published and for sale on Amazon :)

I like to read about arts, leadership and self-development, historical fiction, epic and dark fantasy and something of paranormal romance. Love horror stories, too...

message 612: by Kenny (new)

Kenny Chaffin (kennychaffin) | 96 comments Welcome Isis!

message 613: by Tsitsi (new)

Tsitsi (tsitsidzangare) | 2 comments Hi I am Tsitsi. I am an interior designer from South Africa. I love Fantasy more than Sci Fi but either will do as long as it is well written. Favorite authors are Terry Pratchett, George RR Martin, Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson and even JK Rowling.

message 614: by Ted (new)

Ted Brandy | 2 comments Hi. I'm Ted. I'm a lifelong scifi junkie. I like all types, but I'm less a fan of the hard scifi and more of the space opera kind. I'm a big Arthur C. Clarke fan and Heinlein. I've been finding the shorter ebook scifi lately to be a lot of fun. Wool, of course. And I've read a handful of others. Currently, I'm tackling Game of Thrones and also picked up an new ebook space opera.

message 615: by Marianela (new)

Marianela (tatanob) Hello, I'm Marianela, from Argentina. I love horror stories, mind screw sci fi, love Harlan Ellison, Neil Gaiman and manga. I also indulge in some cheesy romantic stuff every now and then when I want to unplug my brain.

message 616: by S.J. (new)

S.J. Hollis (sjhollis) Hiya! My name is Shelley and I'm in the UK. I'm a YA author and I write children's science fiction and fantasy mash-ups. My favourite genres all mixed together. Teenage witches in spaaaaaaaaaaace!

I love to read comics. I have a very expensive habit! I mostly read Marvel and DC, but DC's reboot a couple of years ago means they are not in my good books!

Love all the usual SF films, TV and books, but I will admit to a soft spot for Stargate: Atlantis. I'm also one of the only people alive on the planet who enjoyed Prometheus. Sorry.

Obviously I love The Avengers film, and I have an uncontrollable crush on Tom Hiddleston.

I'll stop there because I feel the urge to babble coming on!

message 617: by K.R. (new)

K.R. Cox (krcox) | 7 comments Today I went for a short 6km hike with some new hiking gear, a new backpack loaded up with tent, sleeping bag, water, batteries, socks, and a mattress to see where the rub points would be. I used hiking poles too for the first time (those things that look like ski poles, but are more durable and stronger) , and found they are actually really useful. It was like I had four legs!

Favourite books are Ulyssess by Bernard Evslin - got me to love the idea of adventure, White Fang by Jack London - he really understood the mind of a canine, and Lord of The Flies - amazingly written.

I have a blog at www.krcoxbooks.com if you want to read about some of my outdoor adventures or whatever.

Thanks, and HELLO!

message 618: by Joe (new)

Joe Donahue | 15 comments Hi, my name is Joe. I'm a wannabe writer and a small brewery owner. I joined Goodreads because I have a novel I'm about to self publish and trying to find ways to market it, but I also enjoy getting involved in online communities like this. Don't worry, I'm not going to be one of those authors that just constantly spam their book and push it down your throat. I really went to get involved and immersed in your group. I look forward to getting to know as many of you as I can.

message 619: by Kenny (new)

Kenny Chaffin (kennychaffin) | 96 comments Hey Joe! Welcome and best of luck with your novel!
Is it Science or Fantasy or Magic? :)
(I bet you're hoping it's magic, eh? )

message 620: by Joe (new)

Joe Donahue | 15 comments It's Fantasy. The general premise of the novel is that there is an ongoing war between Angels and Demons. Every time a child is born it has an angel assigned to it to be its protector and a demon assigned to be its corruptor. They interact with the child through its dreams. That's a very bare bones synopsis of the plot, but it gives you a general idea of what it's about.

message 621: by S.J. (new)

S.J. Hollis (sjhollis) Joe wrote: "It's Fantasy. The general premise of the novel is that there is an ongoing war between Angels and Demons. Every time a child is born it has an angel assigned to it to be its protector and a demon a..."

It sounds brilliant!

message 622: by Kenny (new)

Kenny Chaffin (kennychaffin) | 96 comments Sounds good! And as I said best of luck with it.
Will be looking forward to your publication announcement.

message 623: by Joe (new)

Joe Donahue | 15 comments Thanks! I am aiming to self publish it and put it out there sometime in the next several weeks. I had set a target date for next weekend and was making very good progress towards meeting it, but was recently hit with a sinus infection and don't have the energy to do anything. I'm honestly not sure how much it will set me back. I guess we shall see.

message 624: by Alan (new)

Alan Denham (alandenham) | 69 comments Joe wrote: "Hi, my name is Joe. I'm a wannabe writer and a small brewery owner..."
And I was just thinking Wow, my kinda guy . . . then I looked at your home page and realised you are in the USA - a bit remote from the UK, and 'brewery' does not necessarily mean quite the same thing either - yes, I am a traditional British 'warm draught beer' drinker.
Never mind - post something up when you publish, and I shall take a look

message 625: by Joe (new)

Joe Donahue | 15 comments Ah yes, but I'm not your typical American mass produced lager style brewer. I love a good malty English style ale. I've even been known to drink my beers room temperature as well. Of course you are definitely right about one thing...it would be one heck of a journey for you to cross the pond to get a pint. Either way, thanks for the reply. I hope you enjoy my novel if you decide to read it once I publish it and I also look forward to interacting with you more in the future on these forums.

Alan Denham (alandenham) | 69 comments Joe wrote: "Ah yes, but I'm not your typical American mass produced lager style brewer. I love a good malty English style ale...."
An American who understands Real Ale? About time too! Spread the word (and the taste!)
Cheers.

message 627: by Micah (new)

Micah Sisk (micahrsisk) | 233 comments New member from Frederick, Maryland USA. I read almsot nothing but SF. Haven't found a fantasy story since Tolkien's that connected with me. Sometimes--rarely--I'll put the SF down a while and read some comforting old mystery stuff like Chandler or Georges Simenon (or John Mortimer's Rumpole work). Even rarer I might read some physics/cosmology for the lay person.

Favorite author of all time is Philip K. Dick. Vonnegut's not too far behind him. Otherwise, my list of authors who I will read practically anything from includes:

Alastair Reynolds
Iain M. Banks
Peter F. Hamilton
Ken MacLeod
Greg Bear
Joe Haldeman
Frank Herbert
Jon Armstrong
Adam Roberts
John Scalzi
Rudy Rucker
David Marusek

And, yes, malty English style ales FTW.

message 628: by David (new)

David Ciccarelli (scifi_writer) Hi,
I'm Dave. I'm a high school teacher and a scifi writer. I just put out an ebook called Mesh: The Pioneers, that is more of a space opera story. I'm looking to read more indie authors to see how I stack up but also just to read something different than the usual.

message 629: by Nathaniel (new)

Nathaniel Danes | 11 comments Hello and welcome, I hail from Odenton, MD and read only SF also.

Good list of authors...also a fan of BV Larson and Jay Allen. Crimson Worlds Series and Star Force Series are must read.

message 630: by Vaulte (new)

Vaulte Kamish (vkamish) | 1 comments I'm a Goodreads Author who just wrote an Action-Adventure, Black Comedy, Satire that is - in some respects - Sci-Fi/Fantasy in that it's a work of speculative fiction with lots of social commentary.
Wow! That was a mouthful!

I grew up glued to "Heavy Metal" magazine (or, "Metal Hurlant" as it was known to us in Europe). This fostered a love of Sci-Fi/Fantasy... although, I would say that, over the years, I've become more keen on Sci-Fi than Fantasy, per se.

I love Sci-Fi books that address important social issues and I try to do the same in my own work.

I live in London and spend my time writing novels, screenplays, and short humour pieces for the Web.

I read mainly on the Kindle App on an iPad Mini. I have a Kindle device but only use it outdoors when it's sunny (which is rare over here).

Ciao,

vK

Charles (nogdog) Just dropping by to say hi to the recent members, and how cool it is to see the several international members. Maybe there's an interesting reading topic: SF and/or fantasy from non-English-speaking authors (preferably with a good English translation available!).

Hi, I'm a self-published author of a 2 book YA fantasy series, but that's not the reason I'm posting here.

Do you read/write fantasy and/or sci-fi? I guess you do or why else are you a member of this group?

I have recently launched One Thousand Worlds in One Thousand Words, which is a blog to showcase the first 1000 words of a writers work. In the 2 weeks since going live, there have been 10 authors featured and over 1500 people have visited the site. 3 fantasy authors are featured during the week, and there's 1 author featured on Sci-Fi Saturdays, which starts this week.

Please stop by and read the great excerpts posted. The authors would like to know what you think about their work and you might find your next great read!

I am also looking for review partners to review and post books on my site. All books will of course be provided free by the author.

For more information, please check out the blog.

Tom Tinney (tom_tinney) First and foremost, I am an Biker-Nerd. They seem like those two things would be in conflict, since wearing either hat (or doo-rag/leather vest) at an opposing event would surprise people. What it really allows me to do is toss out my opinions and ideas on any subject with no governor, since neither “group” is sure what to make of me. Of course, being 6’3” of 300 lb biker means people that are displeased with my position are polite with their response.

I have always had an active “story tellers” mind and the natural ability to capture listeners through humor and style. I am also an avid reader and a prolific writer. I have contributed to and edited biker magazines, as well as blogs (political/biker/ rights) for about 10 years. Pounding out 5000 inspiring words in an evening doesn’t seem like work.

I served in the military (USAF) as a long range radar tech, worked in aerospace, ran tool shops, and became an instrumentation sales manager. I am also an engineering director…all with a basic high school education. The ability to get my message across and gain people’s confidence is part of what I am and it translates well into the written word.

When I was giving serious thought to writing a novel, instead of articles and short stories, most of my circle thought I would write a biker novel, but instead I went with the subject that lets the imagination fly and has unlimited options. I wrote a Science Fiction book. The first of many to follow.

I also know that I know that I am giving up 47% of the country as readership (Political joke) because I hang my political and philosophical views out there on my Blogs and with the lead in to my first novel. For the other 53%, I hope they enjoy my take on a future where hard work gets rewarded and that individual efforts will make the difference, not some government program.

Michael (discombobul8d) Hello, everyone!

I am an avid reader, and while I do enjoy the sensations of an old fashioned paper book, I do love my Kindle! I have been a life long geek of sorts (think Big Bang Theory, and you would be close to some of my childhood), but like Tom above, I don't exactly look the part.

This is my first "book club", so please be gentle!

Michael

Welcome, Tom.

You can't intimidate me, 'cause if you really weigh in at 300, I can outrun you ;-) especially if I kick you in the knee first.

Seriously, at 69 I don't run, I just hobble along.

Glad to see you in the group. I suspect most of the older SF fans hold similar political views to those you expressed so well on your page. Don't know about the younger ones.

Hope to be able to peek at your first SF yarn. I suspect it will be interesting.

message 646: by Acidrica (new)

Acidrica | 1 comments Hello, I'm a 22 year old scifi and fantasy fan with an old kindle as my e-reader of choice. I'm probably not as well read as most other members here, at least not where the classics are concerned, but I'm hoping to change that.

message 647: by Paul (last edited Oct 08, 2013 05:04AM) (new)

Paul Monk (pcrmonk) | 3 comments Hi, my name's Paul, I'm a reader and writer based in England, though lived for many years in Spain and France. I love fantasy and fantasy-tinted books, anything from The Graveyard Book to The Alchemist, but also Alice In Wonderland and Lord Of The Rings.

I also got into SF thanks to an old friend, an ex-French resistant parachutist and entomologist. He was crazy about SF and once a week we'd watch SF films or series together with him asking me what such an such means. But I still prefer reading fantasy over SF, though. This may also be because I spent many years writing scripts for video games. I suppose I really just love a good story brimming with imagination or at least imaginatively written.

Shawn Kass (wayoftheteacher) | 1 comments My name is Shawn Kass and I just published my 2nd book, Another Chance: An Allons-y Adventure; available on Amazon in paperback and kindle format. It feels like Firefly mixed with Star Trek according to the first readers I have heard from.
Hope you all enjoy it.

message 649: by Myla (new)

Myla (garciamf95) | 1 comments My name is Myla and I live in California. I'm simply looking to expand my recent interest in sci-fi novels.
I aspire to be a published author one day and am currently studying Comparative Literature in university and would like to work for the UN. I look forward to the different books we're going to read.

Nice to meet y'all.

Thomas (thomasstolte) | 104 comments Hello all,

I'm Tom from Northern Virginia (i.e. Virginia near DC). I read almost anything as long as it's good. SciFi and Fantasy have always been my favorites. Currently working on my first book, it's with a friend in peer review. So maybe one more editing pass. The cover and back are in my profile photos.

I'm also a home brewer, tending toward stouts and brown beers. No lagers here.
