my library membership is overdue and I need a parent there to renew it so I have to go to the library almost every day but can't get books out its torturee

message 27824: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 3428 comments That sounds miserable!! I'm kinda surprised they don't overlook that rule for a consistent volunteer....

message 27825: by mels (new)

mels (padmeskywalkers) | 10006 comments Mod
Nah, they're really strict about that kind of stuff
Plus I volunteer with the children's department so the front desk really doesn't care, ahaha

If your going to the library almost everyday can't you get one of your parental units to come with you one of the days that you go so they can help you renew your card?

message 27829: by mels (new)

mels (padmeskywalkers) | 10006 comments Mod
Nah, my mum always takes me and she's usually dropping me off on her way to somewhere else, and there's no point in renewing my card at a different time than the rest of the family's, so I have to wait till my dad takes me and my family is organized enough to get all our library cards together

Which could be a while, since I'm the only one that uses mine

message 27830: by Dakota (new)

Dakota Stein (droelofs001) ah I see thats got to be a struggle but maybe you could get your family to try and use their cards more frequently so that way the wait isn't so long

message 27831: by Briana (new)

Briana (brianals) | 15203 comments Mod
Wait. You have to renew your library card?????

message 27832: by Dakota (new)

Dakota Stein (droelofs001) yea you have to renew it every so often so the information on there can updated or what not since people move change phone numbers or whatever

Mine must be a different system; I don't think they've checked any of that stuff since I first got my card. o.o I hope you can get it renewed soon, Mel!

message 27834: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 3428 comments I think they do that in most American libraries. Maybe not all though. *shrugs* Though, at the one I work for, we don't require an adult to be present, at least not over 10 y.o.
Hey, Meli, could a parent call the library and have the cards renewed?

message 27835: by mels (new)

mels (padmeskywalkers) | 10006 comments Mod
Yeah, idk. They make you renew it once a year, now, and you have to have a parent with you unless you're over eighteen. Which is rather stupid, since you don't have to pay or anything if you're under eighteen...

message 27836: by Rebecca (last edited Jul 30, 2016 10:51AM) (new)

Rebecca | 3428 comments Wait, do you have to pay if you are over 18?

message 27837: by mels (new)

mels (padmeskywalkers) | 10006 comments Mod
Yep! Idk how much, but some guy was saying it cost "a king's ransom" so I'm guessing it's not cheap.

message 27838: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 3428 comments *note to self: moving to Canada after presidential election might not be such a good idea*

I've heard of having to pay for library membership in other countries before, yet it still blows my mind every time I hear it!

message 27839: by mels (new)

mels (padmeskywalkers) | 10006 comments Mod
Wait, you don't have to pay there? That's so cool!
It might just be my library, idk?

message 27840: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 3428 comments Libraries here are government funded, so technically taxpayers are paying for libraries. I can get a library card anywhere in Pennsylvania without paying the library for it. Now, if I want a card in a state where I don't live, I would have to pay for it because I'm not paying taxes in that state. It's a little more complicated than that, but that's the simple version.

message 27841: by mels (new)

mels (padmeskywalkers) | 10006 comments Mod
Hm, interesting. Odd that we would have to pay when you don't, considering how taxes typically work in Canada and the states.
I'm not sure if the paying thing is country-wide, though, or if it's just my library.
Also our library is literally in city hall so idk why it isn't government funded, haha

yeah, it's a massive building. holds city hall, the town library, the town museum, the town theatre, and this weird waterfall window thing.

although we're supposedly getting a second library soon, idk how that's going to work

message 27846: by [deleted user] (new)

Thats cool. The local library here is a ok. They never have books. Like theyll have 5,6,7 of Harry Potter, but never ever the first 4. Its also quite disorganized and not updated.

message 27847: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 3428 comments That's why I'm in love with city libraries! They are huge and have almost any book I want!! The libraries near are medium sized, and get most popular books and will take patron requests, so it's a pretty good. My only complaint is their audio selection is severely lacking. *sigh* That's why I have an overdrive account with the next county over that has a city library!! The wait list on popular titles at large libraries is daunting though....

message 27848: by Zechariah (last edited Jul 30, 2016 07:39PM) (new)

Zechariah (zechbarrett) | 2992 comments I looove the Overdrive that my local library offers. I just requested that they add a book to the catalogue a day or two ago and it's already done. I also set my borrow settings for the longest period and renew right away if I need to keep the books longer.

Okay but you have a theatre, library, and museum in one building? That sounds so cool!

S'free here.

Can you guys get books out from any library in your city, or just your local one? If a library in my city has something I can order it online and it'll get to my local library in a couple weeks; it's a pretty good system.
