Your wish is my command: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cV2L... Very shakey camera. That's an interesting technique, too.

DUDE, I googled that the other day - crazy!! We're actually not gonna be in NZ when it comes out, though, fortunately for ya'll - I won't see it probably til my birthday on the 10th. :)

message 24563: by Abby Elizabeth (new)

Abby Elizabeth | 4157 comments Yeah, it looks pretty good. I didn't like the last Captain America movie very much....but this looks way better so that's good. ;)

Rebecca | 3428 comments Oh that's right. I think I remember having this conversation before. Well, it looks amazing to me, but I liked the winter soldier

message 24566: by Abby Elizabeth (last edited Nov 28, 2015 07:53PM) (new)

Abby Elizabeth | 4157 comments See, the first Captain America movie was by far my favorite of the Avenger Marvel movies. All these other movies just sort of mush together in my head. None of them are memorable on their own. A good movie shouldn't fully rely on the movies it's connected to for it to make sense. It shouldn't be a blur of action sequence-action sequence-oh look a kiss-oh look Stan Lee-action sequence. They're good movies. But they aren't memorable. Captain America was memorable, it was beautiful. Some of the scenes still give me chills with a mere thought. I don't mean to dis Marvel, I do love the movies...but they don't fulfill their potential.

That's subjective, Abby; I think they're some of the best/most memorable movies out there. xD

@Rebecca: Germany, actually! We're going to Europe next year on a family trip :))))

message 24568: by Abby Elizabeth (new)

Abby Elizabeth | 4157 comments Some of them. And like I said, I do like the movies. I just never have high expectations for them. And some have disappointed me. Just ask Briana--I am suuuuper picky when it comes to books/movies/tv shows. XD

Oh my gosh that sounds amazing! Have fun! :D

message 24569: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 3428 comments @Abby: I'd consider myself super picky, especially when it comes movies/tv shows. I think you and I must be picky about different things though, since our opinions often differ about these things.

@Johanna: WAAAAAY COOOOOL!!!! (You're taking me with you, right? :P)

???Also Sherlock season 4 starts filming while we're there?

message 24571: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 3428 comments Filming Sherlock season 4.....

*Changes plans* Okay, I'm dropping out of college, flying across the world, kidnapping you, and demanding a ransom of a spot on the trip.

message 24572: by Abby Elizabeth (new)

Abby Elizabeth | 4157 comments Wait: YOU'RE GOING WHERE THEY WILL BE FILMING SHERLOCK? *confused* And I thought season 4 premieres this January? Or wait. I know it'll be a weird but amazing episode that somehow takes place in the past....is that all we're getting? One episode and then another long wait? Or will that be the start of the season? But then will the season take place in the past??? *very confused*

@Rebecca. What do you judge movies on?

message 24573: by Rebecca (last edited Nov 29, 2015 04:02PM) (new)

Rebecca | 3428 comments Yep. All we are getting in January is the Special. Last I heard they have not even begun filming season 4, and will start that in 2016. But you can still be happy BECAUSE THEY ARE RELEASING IT IN THE USA ON THE SAME DAY AS IT RELEASES IN ENGLAND!!!!!

@Abby: That's not a hard question. No, not at all! (can you see the sarcasm font?) I guess things I complain most about in movies are the comedy (most of it is not even funny), the relationships (don't get me started), the plot (relatively believable with minimal plot holes), and most importantly, it must have some relevant meaning to it.

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) | 11500 comments Mod
Yeah, The Abominable Bride is a one-off 19th century episode; Gatiss and Moffat are writing the scripts now, and they're filming a 4th series (back in modern day) in Spring over in the UK. I don't know where they're filming it, but we're spending a week in London at the start of March, so if it's there we'll have a couple of days to coincidentally and incredibly happen to stumble over the set... right? That happens, right??

Btw I AM INCREDIBLY SO EXCITED FOR THE SPECIAL. There's something magical about Victorian Holmes that Sherlock has always missed and I'm SO EXCITED to see Benedict and Martin and everyone in that setting. The references to the ACD stories in the clip we got alone were magnificent.

The only thing that really bothers me in stuff (other than incessant swearing/edgy humour) is major plot holes or unnecessary drama.

And here I am just thinking "can this hold my attention and would I enjoy reading/watching/thinking about it again". And "do I like the characters (or at least most of them)".

@Jo: I WANNA GO TO EUROPE *coughgermanyfirstcough*

message 24576: by Rebecca (last edited Nov 30, 2015 08:25AM) (new)

Rebecca | 3428 comments Oooh, good point Briana. Liking the characters is essential!! Well, actually, the characters just have to evoke emotion from me. If I don't care about them, then I don't care how the story plays out.

That's one of the reasons I found Arrow so delightfully frustrating! Season 2 turned everything on its head. Characters I liked in season 1, I came to the point of not being able to stand them in season 2. And characters I could not stand their guts in season 1, I began to not only like, but had one become a favorite character in season 2. So. Much. Character. Development.
Anyone else seen Arrow? I've only seen the first two seasons, and won't start the third because school.

YES EUROPE!! I'd love to go to Germany as well. I'm casually learning German on Duolingo, and it's such a fun language!

@Jo: I'm excited for the special, but it looks like it will be more paranormal....I'm not a fan of paranormal. At least I'm pretty sure nothing happens to Mary in the special. I'm SO worried something will happen to her in Season 4! *cries*

message 24577: by Abby Elizabeth (new)

Abby Elizabeth | 4157 comments The Abominable Bride looks fantastic but the fact that after all this waiting we only get one episode makes me a bit sad. BUT OMG JO IF YOU STUMBLE ACROSS THE SET WHILE THEY'RE FILMING I WILL BE SIMULTANEOUSLY JEALOUS AND SOOOO HAPPY FOR YOU.

I've seen a couple episodes of Arrow but I haven't really gotten into it, though it's on my to-watch list right alongside The Flash, Agent Carter, Agents of Shield...

For me I care about characters and character development foremost. Then: does it make me think? Does it have redemptive value? Is it memorable? Does it move me emotionally? Do I connect with one or more of the characters? Etc.

@Rebecca: I've seen a couple episode of Arrow here and there and I might get around to watching it from the beginning sometime, but probably nowhere near soon.
Yeah I saw/heard about that. You know, I've never thought of german as a fun language... Maybe that's cause I've grown up with it and it's just another language. Also certain pressures have been put on me and my sisters (in past years) concerning learning german and I think that's taken a little bit away from the fun aspect of it. But I'm glad you're enjoying it.:)

DAREDEVIL, YAS. So good.

@Bri I'M SORRY I wish I could take all of you. Unfortunately I learn Spanish and we're not even going to Spain, xD German sounds too hard!

Abby: I SO HOPE THAT HAPPENS. Like here, the only people or sets you'll stumble over are like the latest Peter Jackson or James Cameron films, maybe a few Hobbit dwarves. But in Europe, like, everything that's not filmed in America is filmed in Europe. So whelp, I'm so psyched.

@Rebecca: It looks a bit darker, but I don't know if it's necessarily going to be paranormal? It may all just be 19th century paranoia - in the stories sometimes things would seem unearthly and then turn out to have purely human explanations (Hounds of Baskerville for example) . But then again Moffat could be using this episode as an opportunity to do whatever he likes, so we'll see, xD It certainly looks exciting.

Briana LS wrote: "@Rebecca: I've seen a couple episode of Arrow here and there and I might get around to watching it from the beginning sometime, but probably nowhere near soon.
Yeah I saw/heard about that. You know..."

Arrow is pretty great. It starts out a little slow, but it gets better!

But I would have loved to grow up around another language! My dad's family is actually German, but they don't speak it any more. My grandma knows some German, but it was never past down. I'm kinda sad about that! :( Sorry to hear you aren't enjoying it, have pressure about it. It's at least fun for the casual learner.

Abby ~love is beautiful fear~ wrote: "Right! Daredevil too. :)"
Melisquish wrote: "Lots and lots of violence xD"

Yeeeaaah, I tried Daredevil. Just couldn't get into it. The story sounds cool! But the violence was pretty gory and unnecessary. I never really connected with the characters either, so I just quit.

Johanna wrote: "I SO HOPE THAT HAPPENS. Like here, the only people or sets you'll stumble over are like the latest Peter Jackson or James Cameron films, maybe a few Hobbit dwarves. But in Europe, like, everything that's not filmed in America is filmed in Europe..."

BUT STUMBLING OVER PETER JACKON AND THE DWARVES WOULD BE AWESOME!!!! I see what you mean though. And all the things that are filmed in America are filmed far, far away....usually across the country.

Johanna wrote: "looks a bit darker, but I don't know if it's necessarily going to be paranormal? It may all just be 19th century paranoia - in the stories sometimes things would seem unearthly and then turn out to have purely human explanations (Hounds of Baskerville for example) ..."

Yeah, but the Hounds of Baskerville was terrifying! I don't really like being scared...
I do hope it is more like that though. I'd prefer that. And the plot of Baskerville was ingenious!

Briana LS wrote: "*sigh* This is just another reason for all of us in the future to do a huge trip around the world with just us GR friends."
