Adding another copy of the book but in a different edition

Hi all,

I've tried searching for a thread discussing this issue but can't find anything...I was just wondering how to do this: I want to add another copy of the book, but it's in a different edition (i.e. one is a paperback, another is a hardcover; or two copies but different publishers).

How do you do this? Every time I try to add another copy in the title it doesn't let me do other options that are available to me when I first add a book.

I hope I'm making sense, and thanks in advance to anyone who might be able to help :)

T., You can definitely do this.

If you do any search from the results page you'll get a link to manually add books:

http://www.goodreads.com/book/new

Fill in the form. If the ISBN is already taken, mention that in the book's description field and leave the ISBN blank. (That should not be a problem in this case; the book should have a separate ISBN.)

Then, create the book, and add it to your shelves in you want.

Then, come back to this group, and post and ask for it to be combined with the other edition.

What is the exact nature of the problem you've been experiencing?

Do you have the ISBN of the book? Sometimes if you search by ISBN it will simply pull it in from Amazon and you will not have to manually add it. If that doesn't work then manually add by following these directions. Then you can combine it with the other editions - or ask one of us librarians to do that for you.

Melody is correct. Definitely search by ISBN first. It may already be in the database!

Hi. Thanks everyone for the reply.

Here's a particular situation: I have already added The Blind Assassin in my bookshelf. It's a paperback, has own ISBN, etc. Then I want to add another copy in my bookshelf, but this time it's a hardcover, and has a different ISBN. Whenever I choose the option to add another copy, it does so but under the ISBN which is already in the bookshelf (the paperback one), and I was wondering if it's possible to separate the two.

T., Hmm. You should be able to add both editions to your shelves. Are you sure they don't both appear. Go to your books and search your own shelves by the title and see if both paperback and hardcover show. If they do, I think you've gotten what you wanted.

T. Try going to the book's page and clicking on "other editions." Are you adding from there? That's what I would do.

The other editions are there, just can't seem to add them. Maybe I was just doing some missteps. I'll try to do it again and get back to you then. Thanks :)

T. Click on other editions and add any one you want. All those added should appear in your books.

One way I have found that works great for me, is I add the first format to my shelf and then if there are other types I want to add for the same book, I go to the book page. From there, under the "Other Editions" section, I click on the other format I want to add to my shelf. Doing that brings you to a new page with the other format book info at top. If you look below that you will see the "My Review" section. In the bar, you should see two options, "review this edition" and "switch to this edition." Just clicking on "review this edition" will add it to your shelves with the tags you pick for it.

I hope I didn't get you completely lost. I'm not the best at directing people without pictures to point at. LOL
