Trish (boxiedoxie) | 38 comments I hope this topic isn't to old, but here are a few ideas.

1. Name: Berthaversary (Birthday and Anniversary spliced together)

Duration: 2 months

Rules: Choose your birth month or wedding anniversary month. Spell out that month and each month after until you have 10 spots (10 books). Use book title (1st letter of title or 1st letter of word in title) or authors name (first or last).

Example:

A - P - R - I - L - M - A - Y - J - U

2. Name: Months

Duration: 2 months

Rules: Use the first letter of each month (in order). Match books by that letter and the first letter of the book or authors first or last name.

I'm working on another one. but it's a year long challenge using odd US holiday's. I'll post that when I'm done.

Trish (boxiedoxie) | 38 comments Ok, here's the big one.

Odd Holidays Inside and Out.

Rules: Choose a book for each catagory.

(For a year long challenge they would do them all (4 books a month), but for a 2-3 month challenge they could choose one from each month)

www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/

Each Month will have 4 catagories based on an odd holiday. I was thinking base 2 catagories off whats on the cover and the other 2 off what's in the book, that's what makes the "Inside and Out" part. I have a full list written up if this sounds like a challenge people would like. Some of the odd holiday's are: Male Watchers Day (Jan. 8)Make Your Own Holiday (March 26), Embrace Your Geek Day (July 13), and Book Lovers Day (August 9). Some of them are hilarious.

Another challenge along those lines, off the same site, is using 2 catagories off the "Month" holiday. Like Blood Donor Month and Sarcastic Month. Each month has 2 catagories, but you choose 1 to use. I have a list for that as well.

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments I love all the odd holidays there are. A few more random days:
Thank a Mailman Day - Feb 4 for all you online orderers :)
National Beheading Day - Sept 2
French Fry Day - July 13 (that's my fav)

That sounds like a fun Challenge Trish :)

We'll definitely be able to use this challenge, with perhaps a tiny tweak here & there, incl a name. LOL

We'll be in touch :)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Lizz, Sandra's been tweaking your Roadshow challenge. Feel free to add more suggestions anytime. They don't have be detailed, if you just a thought you'd like to share. We love when our members join in the challenge creation fun.

Also, you could do like Dana and others have done, and post a challenge yourself. All we ask if that you put it in the right "duration" folder and try not overload everyone - space them out a bit, giving everyone a chance to participate in them all (if they'd like).

Lizz (Beer, Books and Boos) | 1193 comments I might try that

Lizz (Beer, Books and Boos) | 1193 comments What about for a group challenge that game could be chess or checkers. I don't know how it would work

message 168: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Definitely not chess. I'm not smart enough to organize something like that.

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Sounds fun, Lizz. Like Laura's iSpy? Or something different?

message 183: by Laura Lulu (last edited Jun 20, 2011 11:31PM) (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments No Steph, I think she means one where there's a list of common words in titles and you have to read a book with each of those words. Like, read a book with each of these words in the title: blood, passion, shadow, night, kiss, etc. I remember doing a challenge like that a while back, but I don't remember where.

But we already have something kinda like this in the works, that Word Link challenge. When we have to set up a little "link ladder". Books can be read out of order, but your actual challenge list has to be set up so we can see the linkage. For example-

Magic Slays
*magic*
Cold Magic
*cold*
Night's Cold Kiss
*kiss*
Iron Kissed
*iron*
The Iron Thorn
*thorn*
Thorn Queen
*queen*
The Shadow Queen
*shadow*
Succubus Shadows

Remember? :)

Lizz (Beer, Books and Boos) | 1193 comments Steph wrote: "Sounds fun, Lizz. Like Laura's iSpy? Or something different?"

I'm still trying to work it out

message 185: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments I do remember that one, Laura. Are we working on that one to post? I think Vivian or someone 'round here suggested the word train. I remember seeing a "read these words" kinda challenge over at Everything PN, I think.

message 186: by Laura Lulu (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments Vivian's was the chain one where there were different requirements to chain together, like "read another book in the same series", "read another book the same color", "read another book by the same author", yada yada yada.

Then I went off on a tangent with the "Word Link" one above. I'm good at tangents. ;) Remember, we couldn't think of a name for it, because we didn't want to use the word "chain" since that was in the title of Vivian's? Lol.

I'll work on them both tomorrow--I gots to go ni-night. :)

Sorta like a relay?

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 1237 comments Those ideas sound like lots of fun!!!

The word ladder would be great! I foresee a list of 40 or 50 words (or more). Then give folks the option to link as many as they choose. Set a minimum number of links for 1 month participation, 3 months, 6 months, or a year!

Vivian's chain sounds intriguing, but maybe harder to do. Guess that depends on if the chains can be rearranged to fit the individual. If not, could be tough to figure out. But, if there were groupings within the chains of 2-4 books, the groupings could be read in whatever order the individual wanted - as long as they could connect the groupings to each other. Is that as clear as mud????

LOLOL Ya'll are the experts. I'm still trying to figure out the cartoon thing.....I'm working on it, just finding it hard to whittle down to size!

message 190: by Laura Lulu (last edited Jun 21, 2011 09:45AM) (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments Christina, do you have to read a relay in order? If so, then no, it's not like a relay. :) Your little challenge list has to look pretty, showing the two books with the same word in common, but you can read out of order. In order is too much of a pain in the butt--it takes away any spontaneity in your reading and it becomes a chore. :(

It will be like Cindy said above: "the groupings could be read in whatever order the individual wanted - as long as they could connect the groupings to each other"

Cindy, for the word ladder one, we won't give you a list of words to choose from--the sky's the limit. Because there are going to be people who have 2 books with the word "passion", but then there will be people like me who don't read much PNR and don't have any books with "passion" in the title. Or I like straight fantasy, so I may have 2 books to read with "sword" in the title, but someone who doesn't read straight fantasy may have a harder time with that one. :)

And I like the idea of a minimum number of links required for 3 months, 6 months, a year.

I love this kind of challenge--where we get to search our TBRs for words. That's where the idea for the iSpy challenge came from. :)

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 1237 comments OK - that makes sense! Your ladder could go all the way to Pluto!!!!

Might be fun to see if you could make a circle and connect the last book read to the first.....the others could be read in any order.

Christina (AKA Babbling) (babblingbookreviews) | 1242 comments Laura Lulu wrote: "Christina, do you have to read a relay in order? If so, then no, it's not like a relay. :) Your little challenge list has to look pretty, showing the two books with the same word in common, but you..."

Your "link ladder" example reminded me of a relay. I understood the part that it didn't have to be read in order: that's what the finished product looked like a relay to me. :D

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 1237 comments I saw a challenge on a different group that got me to thinking..... IMO their challenge was WAY too long, don't really see how you could do other challenges along with it.

Anyway....what about a birthstone challenge? Either it could be a year long challenge and everyone could read at least 4 books to correspond with the current birthstone, OR, each person could use their own birthstone and the challenge could be 1-2 months depending on what categories are actually chosen.

Here's a list of the birthstones:

January - Garnet
February - Amythyst
March - Aquamarine
April - Diamond
May - Emerald
June - Pearl
July - Ruby
August - Peridot
September - Sapphire
October - Opal
November - Topaz
December - Turquoise

I can see using a cover color for each stone. A seasonal book. Maybe something to go along with the most prevalent horoscope sign. Even using the first letter of the stone as the title or author name.

Hope this makes sense.....it's getting late here and I didn't have enough coffee today.....

BTW - the challenge that sparked all this was about animals..... I have no idea how I got from animals to birthstones.

message 194: by Laura Lulu (last edited Jul 03, 2011 11:58PM) (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments Lol @ animals to birthstones. :)

You could also keep it super simple, a year long challenge, 24 books, one book with a cover color matching the stone, and the other book with the title or author's name matching the first letter of the stone. With the stipulation being that you had to read the 2 books for each month's stone in that actual month.

Read in January - red cover and title/author beginning with G
Read in February - purple cover and title/author beginning with A
Read in March - light blue cover and title author beginning with A
Read in April - white cover and title/author beginning with D

And so on...

Also, there are a couple months that have 2 different stones, like October, my daughter's month. It is both the opal and a pink stone--I'd have to go check to find out the name. But a pink cover may be easier than an opal one. :) I'm pretty sure one of the other months that has two stones is June, and maybe December? Let me go check...

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 1237 comments Love the chart Laura!

I like the idea of just 2 books a month! If you do it that way, then will probably get LOTS of peeps signing up, cuz they can still participate in other challenges at the same time.

For a Bonus twist - we could pick our favorite stone and spell the name of the stone with titles, authors, even cover colors or items on the cover.

Sherri | 781 comments Has anything been done using the continents or countries? The books you would have to read would be set in that country. It cold be also be a variation of bingo or something like stamp my passport.

I love the birthstone Challenge and chart.

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 1237 comments Sherri - that sounds interesting. But, how would you find books to fit? Is there a list somewhere that tells you what country a book is set in?????

message 200: by Sherri (new)

Sherri | 781 comments Cindy - You can search by places in goodreads. Some of the books have locations in their book details. If you go to http://www.goodreads.com/places you can search.
