Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Several people are in Australia, Gin. Sandra's one of them. I've lived in Canberra, the capital and would not recommend it unless you're planning on working in government. It's a lovely place to visit, but not to live, IMO. I'll let the other ladies help ya with the rest. :D

message 452: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Gin, where you want to live depends on what you plan on doing.

I'm in Sydney and love it, *best place in the world* of course. LOL.

Give me an idea of what you're thinking & I can tell you your best options :)))

message 453: by Gin (new)

Gin | 99 comments My husband and I are both nurses, so not government for us. We have 3 children ages 3, 8, and 10. We want to be some where that doesn't get too cold and has access to water. I don't really prefer living in a huge city with tons of traffic, but don't mind being close to one. Not sure I want to live in the middle of nowhere either. We love being outside, arts, music, etc. I don't know we are pretty flexible. I think at this point, the water and warm is the only requirement.
What's Sydney like?

message 454: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Probably weather wise, I'm guessing like California. OK so I'm giving you info on coastal places and Sydney and north.

Sydney has plenty of beaches etc and national parks, great art galleries, Sydney Opera House, concerts etc etc. Population of Sydney is about 4.5 Million.

I suggest you check out the Sutherland Shire which includes Cronulla, outskirts southern Sydney rather than north which is even pricier. (applies whether renting or buying, closer to the city prices go up) http://www.sutherlandshireaustralia.c...

Your other best option could be SE Qld (Gold Coast), which is just below Brisbane. The weather would be just a bit warmer than Sydney and they have all the same stuff except the SOH. LOL. Just be careful cause they had a major flood (one in 100 yrs type) last year up that way. Population of Brisbane is 2.2 Million.

Need any more info just post again Gin ;)

Gin | 99 comments Thanks so much! I look those areas up.

Are those areas overly touristy?

message 456: by Gin (new)

Gin | 99 comments Oh, and how is Brisbane?

message 457: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Gold Coast is touristy but its a big place, and Bris is a city of 2 mill people, and becoming more bustling, but still not a huge population :)

message 462: by Gin (new)

Gin | 99 comments Where is Melbourne in relation to Sydney?

message 463: by Belinda (new)

Belinda | 801 comments You can Sandra! I'm not big into footy LOL!

Melbourne is about a 1 - 1 1/2 hr plane ride south of Sydney :)

message 464: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Gin, Melb to Sydney is 895 km or 556 miles. Definitely not close ;) Melb is capital of Victoria, Syd is capital of New South Wales & Brisbane capital of Queensland. Brissie is 920 km or 571 miles. So Sydney is more or less in the middle :)

Belinda, I'm definitely not into AFL, give me rugby league any day. LOL

message 485: by Freida (new)

Freida Cameron | 10 comments Hi,my name is Freida.
I was born in North Carolina.
Currently live in Tennessee.
DH was 22 years in the US Army and during that time we spent time in Nurnberg Germany and Schweinfurt Germany as well as lots of towns in Georgia USA. I totally love Germany, and if all things were equal, I would definitely love to be able to split my "retirement" years between the US and Germany, with lots of side trips to places like England, Scotland, Wales, Australia...and you get the picture I am sure!

message 486: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Welcome, Freida! Germany was a lot of fun and so convenient to other countries. We went there several times, but were never stationed there.

And I definitely agree on the butler!

message 489: by Lulanie (new)

Lulanie | 2 comments Hi all. I'm live in Rustenburg, South Africa. Was born in the Eastern Cape and would like to retire somewhere cooler :)

message 490: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Hi, Lulanie! I've been watching the cricket game SA vs AUS and enjoying it immensely; day 5 starts in an hour and a half. Ah, reading & watching cricket, 2 things you can do at the same time. LOL.

Somewhere cooler sounds good to me as we both head into hot summers.

message 491: by Lulanie (new)

Lulanie | 2 comments Ah, i prefer not to watch cricket as i support Aus and that does not go do well with the family :) But reading while the others watch is great!

message 492: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments That would be tough Lulanie, supporting Aus surrounded by family barracking for SA. At least it wouldn't be too bad today with the match drawn.

Oh, you should! It's a beautiful country with lots and lots of stuff to see. :)

message 496: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments I bet. I kinda glow in the dark, so I'm a bit fearful of the beautiful tanned bodies I've seen in beach pics from Brazil. ;) I'd still go if I had the chance though!
