IT's true, some stories can be predictable,but the thing I must point
out is that being predictable doesn't necessarily make something bad
or poorly written.........is fact,there are times when predictability
is a sign of good story telling....it mean the story is flowing seamlessly and smoothly. A wise teacher of mine once told me, when
your mind is settled, then the vision becomes clear....and in the case of good story telling, it often means it becomes predictable becuase it's good. And it doesn't mean it's any less exciting......example......

I'm a huge A Song of Ice and Fire fan but have pretty much gone through every topic about the series there is for now. Have to wait for Dance now.

Amazon.de screwed up and shipped out 180 copies of A Dance With Dragons early. Some of those lucky germans have been going around dropping spoilers and whatnot.

Just tossing this out there for those of you who hate having books spoiled.

Nothing is sacred anymore. Was it really a screw-up or was someone being an asshat? Incompetence abounds, but so does corruption. And why do people feel the need to be a douche and make stuff up (the whole false spoiler crap)?
I'm just staying away from all the sites pertaining to the topic so I don't have to worry about it. Except for this one...for the moment =D

I've just started reading these... I sort of didn't want to start until the series is finished, but then I had a sudden yearning for a proper large-scale epic. (OK, maybe not such an unusual yearning for me...) So far, I love it, the political world seems very well developed which may be my #1 requirement.

A buddy read is an informal group read between members who agree to read the same book. It can be a book not eligible for a group read. A sequel or one that has already been a group read. Or not.

i dont fully get why ppl call her naive... she is a strong ruler, but refuses to just throw away every shred of honor and such just to satisfy everyone... every time she does something that isnt so neat, at least she has the consience, thinking... and despite bad things, she still has hope that there is good in people... some of you may call that being naive, but i think it is sweet :P

My favourite characters are Ned (my first favourite character, actually; I loved how much backstory and history we got through his chapters. His honour got him into trouble at the end, but that's also what I like about him), Jaime (his character arc has to be my favourite in the entire series, very compelling), Tyrion ((view spoiler)[at least for the first three books; he's witty and smart and he especially managed to pwn a great deal in ACoK (hide spoiler)]), Arya (loved her from the start), Brienne (another strong, great character) and Sansa (my second favourite character arc in the entire series, the psychology in AFoC was especially fascinating to read).

Well I obviously love A Game of Thrones because it introduces the reader to the world of Westeros, both its complex history and the underlying brutality (Ned's fate shocked me so much that I didn't pick up ACoK until several years later! Yeah, my first foray into the more gritter, new fantasy). It also moved very quickly, which was great (unlike AFoC/ADwD).

But I would have to say that my favourite book in the series is A Storm of Swords. I was on edge from start to finish, there were so many OMG =O moments (I wish I had read this book sitting down; I read most of it while waiting in line to take a regional bus back home for Reading Week) and it's such a game changer.

I hate to say it, but with the long periods of time between books, I sort of lost interest. I do have to say that at the time I was reading them, I found the story to be riveting, with surprising twists. Sometimes the extreme descriptions of sexual activity felt overdone, but other than that I enjoyed the series. My fave character was Jon Snow, btw. I suspect I'll eventually get back to it.

I had the same problem. I took a break between the first and second book, and haven't been able to motivate myself to read the next one, since I know I'll have to reread "A Game of Thrones". It was a riveting first book, and I couldn't put it down until I finished. (Now I've lost my copy of "A Game of Thrones" so I can't reread until I either find or buy a new one)

Ned was my favorite so far, and part of the reason why I took a break between book 1 and 2. He's sympathetic and easy to root for. I felt like I could really like Jon Snow too, but he only had a few chapters devoted to him in the first book, so I didn't really feel like I knew him well enough for him to be a favorite character yet. It probably changes, so he probably would become my next favorite character.

*sigh* I need to finish this series.
