I'm getting done with Redshirts: A Novel with Three Codas. Not liking it as much as I thought I would.

Me too which makes me sad because I love the premise!I've just started reading Range of Ghosts mainly because Scott Lynch has been pimping it so much and the description sounded good!
I'm reading:Goblin Quest - really cute!
The Summer Tree - haven't really started yet
Personal Demons
The Shadowbearer
I'm sure there are some others in the mix but those are probably at home. ;-)

I got a real kick out of Jig in Goblin Quest. Definitely quite the character.

He is! So nice and so confused about it. And misunderstood. I head it was supposed to be comedy but I haven't found any funny as yet.
Ah, Eona. One of my great disappointment books... I'm currently reading Regarding Ducks and Universes and Crocodile on the Sandbank. Not far enough into either to gauge them, really, but I still feel slightly miffed with Ducks & Universes in that it's not as funny as I was expecting (though given that I'm only 14% in, I should probably give it awhile longer).
± Colleen (of the Crawling Chaos) ± wrote: "Ah, Eona. One of my great disappointment books..." Oh, no, really, Colleen? I'm only a little ways into it at the moment and, so far, it's not too bad. I just hope it doesn't go downhill from there!
Unfortunately, yes. I still found it to be a page-turner - the writing style, for me, is just eminently readable - but I really, really disliked the direction some of the plot went. Can't say much without it being spoilery, though.I just hope you have better luck with it than I did. :>
I'm currently reading The Midwich Cuckoos and Through the Valley of the Nest of Spiders, neither fantasy.
Kernos wrote: "I'm currently reading The Midwich Cuckoos and Through the Valley of the Nest of Spiders, neither fantasy."Totally icked out by that title. Just guess which one. ;)
Kernos wrote: "I'm currently reading The Midwich Cuckoos and Through the Valley of the Nest of Spiders, neither fantasy."The Midwich Cuckoos was just an okay read for me, although I absolutely love John Wyndham's The Day of the Triffids. Your second book sounds very intriguing and creepy-crawly!
Naamah's Kiss. So far not as good as the first three Kushiel books but I like it better than the last three.
Traci wrote: "Naamah's Kiss. So far not as good as the first three Kushiel books but I like it better than the last three."Really? I've been wavering about that one...
Having a real hard time getting through Skinwalker. I've finished two other books while reading this one. Not a good sign.
Damali wrote: "Naamah starts off very good, but then things fall apart, for me."Not good to hear. :(
Actually I'm finding the whole random sexuality odd so far. It really worked in the Kushiel books. But here it's like, hey you're cute come over here.
A little spoilerish.I don't know how far you are, but my big problem is that she's like a wannabe Phedre, but as soon as she got the chance to be on her own, she became dependent on someone else, and whiny and needy. That's my most hated POV.
The one thing I loved about Phedre is that, even in the beginning when she was living with someone else, she had her own mind. I felt like she had control, and she was smart. The Naamah POV is none of that. And I don't even recognize the rich, vivid city anymore.

That makes me sad. I think I'll continue to avoid this one. The lushness was what made me love it.
Sophie wrote: "Having a real hard time getting through Skinwalker. I've finished two other books while reading this one. Not a good sign."@Sophie, I am just curious why you don't like it. It is next on my list, but from the description I am rather sceptical...
Just finished Rise of Empire. It was even better than the first book. Mystery, suspense, and more than a few 'hold your breath' and exclamatory moments. Started book three, Heir of Novron
Jalilah wrote: "Sophie wrote: "Having a real hard time getting through Skinwalker. I've finished two other books while reading this one. Not a good sign."@Sophie, I am just curious why you don't like it. It is ..."
Skinwalker is the other extreme for me. I do like women POVs who can take care of themselves, and not look for a shoulder to lean on, BUT that doesn't mean they have to harder than a man...just saying. :D
And that Beast half of her was weird, too. The whole thing was weird actually.
I think it's always interesting to discover why others dislike or at least don't care for some of the books that are my favorites. Gives me a different perspective on things.Actually, the skinwalker/beast thing was one of the primary attractions for me, probably because I've always been interested in the skinwalker myths of the southwest Indians. They have a different outlook on skinwalkers ... evil ... and I liked this cooperative, benign perspective on the skinwalker myth. Didn't always like Beast ... as a personality ... but then I'm not a cat person either, so to me the personality came across as realistic.
Oops, sorry, Sharon. I didn't know that was one of your favorite books. I'm trying to make an effort to have respect for other people's favorte authors. :DI've also had a problem with the wolf scenes in the Patricia Briggs novels, so I think it's just a personal hang-up for me, and nothing to do with the books. :)
Damali wrote: "Oops, sorry, Sharon. I didn't know that was one of your favorite books. I'm trying to make an effort to have respect for other people's favorte authors. :D"No, no ... I don't mind when someone doesn't like books I do, I'm just interested in reasons. I've tried to read books that some people just rave about and I end up thinking 'why?' myself.
Actually, I don't like many of the werewolf things either ... you mentioning you have a problem with the Briggs wolf scenes are one of the things I don't care for in those books myself. Too much 'wolf pack' mentality even in their human form.
And I'm definitely not much of a vampire fan either, I've only read one book and two series where the vampires were either characters I liked or could tolerate well ... one is Robin McKinley's vampire character in Sunshine, the other is the very nerd-y little vampire, complete with pocket protector, who apologizes when his fangs come out unexpectedly, in the Liam and Figg series by Stephany Simmons. But I know there are a lot of people who are avid fans of the vampire series.

Hmm, the writing style mostly. I find it very awkward.
I feel a little petty about it, but there are just these small things that are driving me nuts. Things like spending an entire paragraph describing in extreme detail just how an iron gate lock works. How Jane spends a lot of time putting on tons of weapons but doesn't seem to use any of them. How everything about Jane is explained by her "website". 30 pages in I think the phrase "she must have really studied my website if she knew that I [insert Jane skill/characteristic]" at least 3 times.
Then there's this crazy "factoid" where the author claims that black eyes are "a sign of mixed European and American Indian heritage." Um, isn't dark brown eyes one of the most common eye colours in the world? These are small things, but they keep adding up to an annoying whole. I don't give up easy, however, so I'm really trying to focus on the good stuff
I like Beast, but I don't understand why she wrote the point of view in the past tense. Every time I read Beast's sections my mind automatically turns it into present tense. In my head, that seems to suit an animal mentality better and somehow makes the switch from Beast to Jane less weird.
About halfway through
which was a free download sometime back. Getting better all the time and I'm at the point now where I'm finding it difficult to put down.
Kamla wrote: "Just finished Rise of Empire. It was even better than the first book. Mystery, suspense, and more than a few 'hold your breath' and exclamatory moments. Started book three, Heir of Novron"Glad to hear it - Heir of Novron should be "the best of the set" (if I did my job right).
I started reading Shadow's Edge second in Brent Week's Night Angel Trilogy.
I'm reading The Virgin's Lover by Phillipa Gregory...I love historical fiction almost, almost, as much as fantasy.
So, I'm a little annoyed right now. I'm trying to get ready for July BotMs but I'm running in to total BS.
Book 1: Song of the Beast is not only not available at my library(well, libraries...I live in an area that gives me access to two library systems). One library only has 1 Carol Berg book period and 1 library has a total of 3 Carol Berg books.
*sigh*
So I would need to buy it (which I was trying to avoid since hubby is about to ban my bringing any new books in the house).
Mike (the Paladin) wrote: "May have asked this before...do they have "Inter-library Loan"?"I'm not sure. AFAIK we don't (or at least I don't) because I already belong to both systems. But I would have to call to find out.
Our local library trades with all the libraries in the county. You just have to request a title, and they'll search for it.
Robin wrote: "Our local library trades with all the libraries in the county. You just have to request a title, and they'll search for it."We're set up as a county system already. So I searched both the county I live in and the county directly beside us.
:-(
I wonder if I can get into AA County? They probably have a great library system...
Our local library takes phoned in requests, ordering the book or putting your name on a waiting list.
So I just signed up for another library card. This will make 3 since my Philly Free Library card expired.
I use inter-library loan a lot. Libraries across the country belong to a system (I think there's a fee the local libraries pay as our system doesn't get audios or videos. They say it's because of cost.)
Ok, so I just got access to the state inter-library system. There is a total of TWO copies of Song of the Beast in the entire state!
One copy was checked out and I requested the other. Hopefully I'll get it by July 1 but they were talking 30 days. O_o
I wonder what my local library's policy is regarding donated books? I know they sell a lot but I wonder if they will take brand new books...I'm willing to buy them a copy.
That's why I stopped donating to our local library. We had one librarian who sold donated books on principal. She said she wasn't going to let patrons determine the library's collection.
Mike (the Paladin) wrote: "I use inter-library loan a lot. Libraries across the country belong to a system (I think there's a fee the local libraries pay as our system doesn't get audios or videos. CRAPPY schools, crappy libraries and great public parks. ???!?!?!? Something is wrong in the world when books and education take a back seat to organized sports.
Mike (the Paladin) wrote: "That's why I stopped donating to our local library. We had one librarian who sold donated books on principal. She said she wasn't going to let patrons determine the library's collection."O_O
But patrons are the ones who have to READ the collection!
I know. I've noticed that every time a tax increase comes up the state legislature says if they don't get it the schools will have to close or something... Some how I'm beginning to wonder.
We're cross posting, LOL. Yeah...but she's the head librarian and she knows, "what we should be reading".
Mike (the Paladin) wrote: "I know. I've noticed that every time a tax increase comes up the state legislature says if they don't get it the schools will have to close or something... Some how I'm beginning to wonder."Schools?? Who needs money for schools when the kids can play soccer!
