I just finished The Summoning Fire by David Michael. It's gritty urban fantasy. Not for the faint of heart. I thought it was good, though.
Danielle that looks very good, I really enjoy gritty urban fantasy. I am going to take a look at it.
YW???? What does that mean?I just started Storm Front by Jim Butcher. I know that was a group read from last month but I am always a little behind!
Christine, I sort of envy you. In just starting the Dresden books. That series is one of my all time favorites and I'm one of the ones waiting (under great strain I might add) for April when the next volume is due. (LOL.) Enjoy.

So far, I like Harry.
The TV series will seriously mislead you in some ways. There's a Dresden group here and their only rule is, "don't mention the TV series", LOL. I rated the books 5 stars from the first one, but they actually get better into the series. It is of course a matter of taste, so decide for yourself, hope you enjoy them. My reviews are here if you're interested.
I promise to never mention the TV series again. That's easy because I only watched part of the 1st one so that hardly counts. LOL5 stars from a guy who rarely gives 5 stars is high praise. I hope I enjoy them half as much as you do! I will read your reviews after I read each book so I can decide for myself. How many Dresden books are there?
I loved Storm Front, too. It's a lot of fun. I watched the television series a while ago (sorry Mike! lol), and enjoyed it a lot. But, now that I've read the first book, I can see how people would hate the televised version.
Oh, I don't hate it...I even have the DVDs, but it's one of those cases of having to realize that you have 2 different stories that happen to have the same name. LOL The series hardly resembles the books...and isn't near as good.
I can agree with that. If I were to watch the series again, I think that I'd watch it as a project that appreciated the books and took the stories in another direction.
I'm reading The Riddler's Gift by Greg Hamerton, slowly but surely, and I think some of the members on here would enjoy it. I am pretty sucked in. I'm also reading The Iron Duke by Meljean Brook. It's got a fair amount of romance, but stands on solid legs as a very well-conceived and executed steampunk fantasy. I recommend both books.
I'll look for your review of The Riddler's Gift. I've seen lots of good reviews, but I can't decide if it's one I'd like or not...
I'm currently reading Towers of Midnight by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, Crystal City by Orson Scott Card, Wintertide by Michael J. Sullivan and Lord of the Shadows by Jennifer Fallon.
So jealous of Regina and Christine both. Would love to reading either of those series for the first time as well :) Completely different but both amazing :) And Mike, I just completed my hardback Dresden collection with a first edition, first printing of Storm Front for Christmas :) good times, sir. Good times.
Anyone who's read my reviews knows that the Dresden books are some of my favorites. It's always great when you find a really good book, a really good series is even better.
I'm hooked. I loved, loved, loved Storm Front. Mike, I want to read your review. Harry Dresden is such a great character. I like how Butcher defines magic and how his book is set in Chicago. I love Chicago! My review is kind of gushy but I couldn't help myself. Its well written and its entertaining. I can't wait to read more!Grant, you are so lucky to have a first edition, first printing. How did you get it?
Christine, I don't know if others feel this way, but I found in reading the Dresden books, that the weakest (and it's still a fantastic book that I gave 5 stars) is possibly the second (though there are story elements there that tie in later). But the books get better as they go. I think one of my favorites (out of a series of favorites) is Dead Beat. It may be that at that point there is a burst of character growth for Harry, Murphy and others...or it could just be the story. :)Enjoy.
Michael, I want to read American Gods soon. I'm currently reading Anansi Boys as a buddy read with Christine. What are the books you've very excited about? You can't give a tease like that and leave me hanging. I'll drive myself mad with curiosity. And I'm also reading This Immortal.
You are going to love The Name of the Wind! Its an amazing book!I'm reading the Anansi Boys and The Lightning Thief
I'm currently reading Bloodheir, Uther and The Naked and the Dead. I still plan on reading Shadowrise, The Summer Tree, Easy Company Soldier: The Endless Combat of a Sergeant from World War II's "Band of Brothers", Gods and Legions: A Novel of The Roman Empire and Conquistador: A Novel of Alternate History before the month is out. Not sure what I'm reading next month outside of the book group reads
Grant, If you're going to read The Summer Tree, you'll want The Wandering Fire and The Darkest Road handy because it's one continuous story. You'll be in the middle of the story when you finish The Summer Tree. Unless that doesn't bother you, but I thought you'd want to know that there's no wrap up at the end of The Summer Tree. I didn't know and had to hunt down the rest of the trilogy immediately.BTW, it's one of the best series I've ever read. I can't wait to see what you think of it.
*smiles* It's one of my favorite series as well, Jackie. I read it years ago and have reread it only once since then so I judged it time for another romp. Nonetheless, I think you for the tip! I actually didn't know at the time I first read The Summer Tree and had to wait well over a month before I could find the second and third novel since the internet wasn't as handy then as it is now ;)
I didn't realize it was going to be a re-read. Wasn't that month waiting awful? I had to wait about 2 weeks before mine was delivered and it felt like 2 months.
Will you be reviewing it for goodreads?
You know I've yet to review a single novel. I'm obviously very opinionated and passionate in my views of novels however to be honest it's a bit of a daunting task. I've read A LOT of novels and I'm so OCD that I don't know that I could start reviewing without attempting to review..well..all of them. Talk about a task that ate your life as Tad Williams put it.

Reading
. It's a disturbing premise but a great series so far.

Snort, grin, Two Weeks, A MONTH wait??? - how'd you have felt if you had to wait for Kay to WRITE them? I did. People, ;) - you have no patience.
Lol, Janny, I'm a George R.R. Martin fan. I oooooze patience. Lol for that matter I'm a 28 year old male. Considering my generation you should be madly impressed that I'm literate ;)
Janny wrote: how'd you have felt if you had to wait for Kay to WRITE them?I'd have been cursing him out...similar to how I've been doing with Jennifer Roberson.

Amen - but, well worth the wait...Have you tried
Carol Berg yet? If not, her work could provide you with a stellar dose of consolation.

You Martin fans, no patience either - ;) - were you aware it took Tolkein 17 YEARS to complete Lord of the Rings? (I researched that one, not older than dirt, yet.)
In a weird way, it's a testament of our love for an author's work when we become impatient. Better than not caring if the next of a series comes out or not.
Jackie wrote: "Janny wrote: how'd you have felt if you had to wait for Kay to WRITE them?I'd have been cursing him out...similar to how I've been doing with Jennifer Roberson."
I'd started Kate Elliot's Spirit Gate right after it was published. I stopped half-way through when I discovered it was a trilogy. :) I think that was about 2007. Not sure if she ever finished the series yet...
oh, BTW - didn't Jennifer Roberson write the Tiger & Del series? Loved that series but I don't think I ever finished it.
Yes Janny...but Tolkien released it all as one book. (the publisher broke it up into 3 as they thought it too long...and probably because it would make more money that way LOL).People didn't have to wait the 17 years between volumes!I remember when I was waiting for Tad Williams to release green Angel tower...I thought that was a long wait (90 to 93)... did I have a lot to learn. :)
The waiting can certainly suck, but I'm patient. I look at it this way: the longer it takes for any series I love to be completed, the longer I have to enjoy it.
I don't always. The bad thoughts always sneek their way in, like, "What if I die before the next book comes out?" LOL

She has finished it, actually. And started a new one.
MrsJoseph wrote: "oh, BTW - didn't Jennifer Roberson write the Tiger & Del series? Loved that series but I don't think I ever finished it."She did. Great fun read. Did you find her historicals? She did a two volume work on Robin hood that was spendid, and also, one on the massacre of Glencoe. Lady of the Forest and Lady Of The Glen: A Novel of 17Th-Century Scotland and the Massacre of Glencoe; I also loved her Karavans series.
Lol, in my Heaven, Mike, I've no doubt that God will allow me the library of my dreams. I'll even loan you a book or two if ya like when we meet up ;)
And Janny, I could'nt agree with your Carol Berg recommendation more. I really enjoyed her Bridge of D'Arnath series which garned more attention than the Rai-Kirah or The Lighthouse Duet. However, I really think the Rai-Kirah series was a better series overall and wish it had gotten a bit more appreciation. Have you read The Spirit Lens yet?
