Lol, Nicki--I do sympathize with keeping books--even if I don't like them, perhaps someone will borrow them, right? I just ran out of space. I've got books double-stacked, which just ruins the joy of looking through my collection.

Okay, I've started reading The Yiddish Policemen's Union... which of you nuts tried to convince me it was urban fantasy? I'm warning you, I'm packing... gnomes.

This is my 'system' as well. Limited shelf space and actually a fairly limited number of 're-readable' books as well. A few series/authors that are auto-buys but otherwise, my system is to buy-to-own only the books that I know I will want to re-read. Fortunately, although my local library doesn't have much of a fantasy/sci-fi section, they have a very good interlibrary loan setup. I do try not to 'overwork' it but so far they've never failed to get a book I've requested.

Even realizing that you meant page rather than word, I still find this comment laughable. 400 pages qualifies as epic? In comparison to Dr Seuss perhaps. Good luck reading Erikson, Martin, Rothfuss, Jordan, Goodkind and a dozen other authors whos average novel is practically twice that size.

I just finished Paul Kearney's Monarchies of God series, so I'm now rereading George R.R. Martin's A Game of Thrones.

The Farseer Trilogy is a pretty good but I think people can do better. Abercrombie, Rothfuss, Weeks, Lynch, Sanderson...

This morning, I started reading Relic. This is my first read from this series. Not very far but intriguing so far.

I like Charlaine Harris, especially the Sookie series. They're not life-altering literature or nothing, but they're fun reads, popcorn fluff that I read quickly and enjoy. :)

I just finished Fortune's Fool and it was very, very good. I can't wait until I can find me a copy of the next one The Snow Queen so I can continue on. When I went to Borders last weekend and got Fortune's Fool, they didn't have the Snow Queen, but I did buy The Sleeping Beauty , so I need to hurry up and get TSQ.
I'm going to read next, The House on Durrow Street , the second book in the Mrs. Quent series, though I know when I finish it, I'm going to be mad because the third one's not out yet, and the author's website hasn't been updated since like Feb of 2010... it's going to kill me, that wait of unknown duration...

Working on Perdido Street with The Well of Ascension next up. Really am enjoying Perdido. This is the third book I've read by this author. Fun!

So far I think it's really great, too. A fast, entertaining read. It also feels like something that was written today. It feels too dark to have been written in the 1950s.

i wish it had been! the first third was pretty enjoyable. the rest was....eh, sorta annoying. i will be reading the sequel for a group read but i'm not exactly excited about it.

Sorry about the word vs. page, my proofreading abilities are deteriorating along with my vision and as a matter of fact 400 was a typo as well (should have been 500. But I'm also a mystery afficionado and consequently, books in the 500 plus page group tend to have to be very well written before I don't have this overwhelming feeling of "Will you get ON WITH THINGS! I don't care what you had for breakfast, dinner and lunch and where you had to go to get it ... last week, yesterday OR today!" Just simply the type of reader I am ... the majority of my 'favorite' mystery books are in the 300 to 400 page group as well as my favorite fantasy books.

I've read all of that series liked them well enough to own/re-read, though have never been able to really get into her other series.

Lol oh it's no biggie, Sharon. If it weren't for the edit button, I'd be a hot mess on here. We're definitely opposite ends of the spectrum. I enjoy the gradual build as well as the in depth characterization of big ole 1000 page epics. Fortunately the genre is broad enough to give us both what we like ;)

Some of this I will blame on my age. (Hey ... they keep calling this the 'golden years' so it's got to be good for something, right?)

Anyway, back to what I was saying ... I can blame it on memory issues due to old age now ... and people actually believe me. So I will blame my preferences to the fact that with really long books, by the time I get to the last third of the book, I have to keep going back to the first third to remember who they're talking about!

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Just finished Tiger's Quest. I love the Indian elements and how it brings all sorts of mythologies and legends into play.

I just started Unnatural Issue: An Elemental Masters Novel. Not too far into it yet, but I've enjoyed all of the other elemental master books so far.

I also read The False Princess partly because my sister in law wanted to borrow it so I had to read it first. It was a fun, quick read. Also read Daughter of the Empire for a group read. I really enjoyed that one too.

Next up will probably be Midnight Tides. This is also for a group read. I'm really enjoying the Malazan books so far.

I might get something else before I get to Midnight Tides, but that one would depend on my mood at the moment.

I'm currently reading Sarah Canary by Karen Joy Fowler. It was recommended to me, but I can't remember from whom.

Has anyone else read it? I'm not getting the whole Wizard of Oz vibe it allegedly has, and I'm wondering what I'm missing.

Picked up Son of Ereubus the other day. I'm only 80 pages in, but J.S. Chancellor may be a new author to watch.

Leaning towards dark fantasy, the story itself is refreshing and fast paced... I'll know more later, but I'm already annoyed I spent time writing about it instead of READING it during my now almost over lunchbreak.
