I am glad you are enojying them Amanda...Memories is my favorite. My TBR has gotten so huge that I have a hard time trying to decide what to squish in between Malazan books! lol I usually go with BOTM reads in my various groups. I am always happy if at least one of them does something I have already read...

But I am reading Assassin's Apprentice mostly just because everyone is so horrified I havn't! So far it is sweeping me along in a very classic fantasy sort of way.

You're right to get people interested in Malazan. I love what I've read so far - I have to get to book 6 of Malazan. There's a used book sale coming up. Maybe I'll get lucky!

And Farseer has some grit. Granted, it's not like the Bridgeburners, but I think you'd like it!

This is so not fair.. Each time I read a thread here, I want to start with new series or re-read an old one... There isn't enough time.. People stop tempting us :)
I started with Blade Itself as it was the book of month in group.. Now I want to start Malazan series :/

I stick with only reading the first book in the series. Too many authors and genres to read. Currently half way through Flyboys: A True Story of Courage. Excellent so far. The author portrayed point of views from all sides to eliminate the common mistake of demonizing the enemy, which is the root of lack of empathy and cause of cruelty in war. I'm on the beach on a drizzly day going for my walk typing into my iPhone. Because I felt like it.

@Aloha.. That's a good approach. But whenever I read a book that I like, I've to know the end.. So I end up reading whole series in row..
And due to all temptations and a bad habit of starting too many books at a time, I'm at lost on what to continue reading and what to leave for later :(
Atleast I haven't started with 3 more series that I wanted to.. (holding off for now)

I know the feeling! I just finished Storm Front and want to dive into the next but then I'll neglect the other books I need to read...and then there is Mercy Thompson's books I just started...and The Secret Histories...oh, my. I think I just gave myself a headache, lol.

I'm currently in the middle of The Forever War. It's reminding me of Old Man's War, which I loved.

I want to get to the rest of the Wheel of Time series over the next few months. I'm excited that Crossroads of Twilight looks to have more of Mat! Finally! I get the impression that Wherl of Time will be much like Harry Potter in that if I don't read the final book the day it is released, some douche will light up Facebook and the Internet with spoilers! When the final Harry Potter came out, I literally hid my laptop, turned off my phone and went to read the book under a tree in the park. A friend of mine didn't and had the ending ruined when he looked at his newsfeed on Facebook. I've put so much time into Jordan's epic, there is no way I will allow the ending to be spoiled!

I'd also love to get back to Dresden Files, Joe Abercrombie's series, and Honor Harrington. Not to mention, I've kind of been craving a good murder mystery...

One new rule that I've made for myself is to wait for author to finish series, read reviews and then buy whole set together.
Makes life so much easier.. WoT was such a painful experience, though Brandon is doing a good job..
Also, the fact that you forget few things about the series by the time next installment comes out.. Atleast I do :(
I've been waiting forever for Song of Fire n Ice and think I'll re-read before next one comes out.

Finished Daemons Are Forever this morning. Quick read but super enjoyable :)

As for reading styles well if I read the first book in a novel, I'll read the entire series that's available in succession regardless of size. It's like one big long story that way :)

I tried to talk to an employee at Books-A-Million about their atrocious fantasy section and all I got was *blank stare* and *no comment*. The kicker for me is always "We can order it for you." No, you can't. I can order it for myself from Amazon you dickhead. If you want the sale you have my book. No book, no sale!

I have to give the Malazon series another try. I have the first one at home but just couldn't get into it when I first tried to read it so maybe I should try again. Perhaps I just wasn't in the right frame of mind at the time.

You're not alone with this. The Malazan books are difficult to get into for almost everyone I've talked to who has read it. Granted, there are those who just hate the books and never continued, but I think it's one of those series where it'll eventually dig its claws into you if you're patient enough to continue.

Some get hooked about halfway through the first book, for others it's not until the second or third book where they find themselves hooked.

I'm on the second, and am hooked.

Hey e'rybody. Been away for a bit but had to comment on the Malazan Book of the Fallen. I can certainly understand not enjoying a series due to its dark or gritty nature, but it's the chracters and themes which elevate the MBotF to its epic status in my opinion. Whiskeyjack, Kalam, Quick Ben, Rake, Bottle, Hellian, Tool, Silchas Ruin, Tehol, Bug, Mappo, Kruppe and on and on and on ... these characters I truly love.

And the themes: standing alone for what's right in the face of certain death, sacrificing yourself for the survival of another, maintaining honor and self respect in spite of the evils all around you .... there's so much attitude, wit and depth to MBotF that it still leaves me realing.

I can't promise it's for everyone, but it's jaw-dropping amazing for anyone who sticks with it!

As for what I'm currently reading (theme of this thread :), I'm working my way thru Rothfuss' The Wise Man's Fear and Charles Adams' When In the Course of Human Events: Arguing the Case For Southern Secession. Both are fantastic ... but in completely different ways... :)

That pretty much cinches it for me. Malazan won't be for me as well; I tire very easily of battle descriptions. I'm much more into character and plot driven novels.
I'll get into A Song of Ice and Fire once I'm assured the series is nearing the end.

I've yet to see much of that. None of the characters from GotM that I liked are in DG except for bits. Kalam, yes, but not that much. There's no Kruppe who was interesting. I've not seen anyone face down anything except the godawful horror of slaughter unending.
