I pretty much ended up choosing Dresden because it was short, and I needed a shortie to close out March. Plus it's different, and I needed to change things up after WMF.
I don't know, Kevin. I've kinda got the feeling that if I were to read Dresden and not like it, I'd be banned from GoodReads.....But I can't argue which is better, since I haven't read any Jim Butcher. I should.
I will say that The Name of the Wind lives up to hype. As far as The Wise Man's Fear, well, we'll just have to wait for my comment until tomorrow or so. 200 pages to go.

Sure, if you want to! Might as well comment here and there if we're both reading it at the same time :)
Dawn wrote: "Uh oh, I'm scared. Drastically? What are you going to read?!?!?!?"Hmmm...maybe Storm Front?
Now wait. By the time I chug through 200 pages of WMF, you two will be done with 300 pages of Dresden.
I'm going to the library today or tomorrow, I hope. I can add Storm Front to the list.Along with Graceling, Fire, Foundation, and Silverthorn.
Hmmm. All short, but can I knock them out in 2 weeks?
Chris, don't chug WMF! It's too good to rush! I promise to procrastinate and read Storn Front super slowly...
I think a Dresden Buddy read is a good idea...Dresden is great but a fast read, so its erfect for our in between doorstoppers reads
I'll actually be reading it a little slowly too, now that I think of it.. I got my new Sims Medieval yesterday, so I'll probably be hooked to that a lot.. Plus I gots things to do tomorrow.. So no worries, I'll still probably finish before you, but I won't finish before you start at least! ;)
I'm not rushing, Laurel. I'm staying up until nearly 2 am every night to make the 100 page goals.I'm exhausted. LOL
Laurel wrote: "I have a copy of Storm Front I've been meaning to get to. Should I make a post for a buddy read?"I have storm front, too. I might join a buddy read!
At the moment i'm reading George R R Martin - Book 1 -A Game Of Thrones and enjoying it a lot :) let us see what they'll do with the Tv Series inspired bit this book...
I'm reading The Name of the Wind. I'm enjoying it but it's a little stressful. Rothfuss creates great characters and stocks his book full emotional moments...sometimes I feel a little drained. I've noticed some heavy handed foreshadowing as well as a lack of action. I need something to happen to break up the emotional tension.
MrsJ, I know what you mean about the foreshadowing in NOTW, but oddly enough, it didn't bother me at all in that one. Weird how things sometimes bother us and sometimes don't, isn't it?

I've spent so much time slightly depressed by Kvothe's life that I can't help but to notice... Did I mention that I cried for about 3-5 chapters straight? My husband looked up and was PO'd, lol. He made me put the book down and go wash my face with cold water...
It doesn't stay depressing the whole time, but the beginning does have a lot of sad parts packed in.
I hope so, Dawn. It's starting to remind me of A River Runs Through It (the movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105265/). Not in plot but in the tear factor.
Kvothe can't seem to get a break, but I like the he keeps on trying. I feel that those very harsh events he survives with grace are preparing him for what's to come in the future.
Someone on another board made a great comment about Kvothe. she said that he was so smart that he ends up outsmarting himself a lot and quite a bit of his misfortune he brings on himself. That thought struck me as true because while you spend so much of the book rooting for him and feeling bad for him, you are also quite exasperated with him as well.

On the other hand...you can tell that he had been slightly spoiled by his parents...maybe spoiled is not the correct word. They made him learn the value of hard work and practice but they didn't teach him any type of diplomacy or restraint. Then he lost his parents at such a young age and never had another adult guide.
Those are all good points about Kvothe. I think that he is a bit arrogant, but I feel that there were situations he faced that were beyond his control. His reaction could have been different. I think I identify with his 'you're not the boss of me' attitude. I'm kind of like that with some people.
I finished book: [We Have Always Lived in the Castle|89724], Foundation and Something from the Nightside and am almost done with The Windup Girl. I picked up Opening Atlantis and Fool's Errand at the library so they're next!
Maggie, have you already read Hobb's Farseer trilogy? I thought you hadn't read her before for some reason.. If that's the case, definitely don't read the Tawny Man trilogy before Farseer! If you have read Farseer, just ignore my rambling :)
no, I havent read it...and I know you all said Farseer first, but my library just doesnt have it, and I want to make sure I dont hate the style before I buy them....
You are making a big mistake if you start with Fool's Errand, you should be patient and wait until you get your hand's on Assasin's apprentice.I don't think you will understand anything if you start with Fool's Errand.
Maggie, I'll hit the used book stores around here tomorrow and try to find you a copy. Friends don't let friends get a bad impression of the Farseer Trilogy!
LOL! Wow, you guys are making me feel I should read the Farseer Trilogy. (I will, I will but my TBR list is killing me.I finished Storm Front and started on The Deed of Paksenarrion. I had to put The Name of the Wind on hold for a while...he's a bit too intense for me sometimes.
I'm also reading The Magician's Nephew - one of my least favorites of the Chronicles of Narnia so this will go slowly. Of course I'm also re-reading Kushiel's Dart.
I'm also reading Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother. Some of the things she did/does make sense but a lot of the time she was cruel and petty for no reason. Of course, as this is a bio that is specific to her parenting and not to the family as a whole I'm sure that there are some things that she does not talk about that shows the good in the family as well.
Wow! I truly appreciate everyone's concern over my literary well-being!Chris was good enough to send me an epub version I can load to my Nook, which I have done, and I will hurry and return the library book before I get tempted!
It's worth it! I'd hate to see anyone start in the wrong place and have it ruined for them. Yay for Chris!
i'm reading Watership Down by Richard Adams and i'm really enjoying it so far. i've been wanting to read it for years but just hadn't got around to it. i just discovered this really good band though, called Fall Of Efrafa and everything they ever put out was influenced by Watership Down, including 3 concept albums titled Owsla, Elil, and Inle. i decided i needed to read the book now because if a band makes their whole existance revolve around WD then it must be a really awesome book.
