I've found I have less tolerance for poor writing as I get older. Not so much misspellings, but incorrect usage, canned or fill-in-the-blank plots, poor sentence structure & such. That means some of my old favorites no longer are.I've also diversified my reading a bit more. I went for decades reading SF & Fantasy almost exclusively, although I use the terms very broadly. Now I tend to read more non-fiction, although still not a lot. My job requires reading tons of nonfiction, so I tend to get my fill & want something escapist on my off hours.
That's an interesting question, Mary JL. Years ago I remember loving the novels written by Irving Wallace. Recently I tried reading one of them again and found that I didn't enjoy it at all. That definitely indicates my tastes have changed.

As a child, I liked historical fiction and mysteries. At the age of 10 or so, I add science fiction and fantasy. That is still the major part of what I read.
However, I have added one new type of book to the list--non-fiction. Perhaps non fiction books for children were not as well written years ago, but I have discovered that well written non fiction can be just as interesting as fiction! I am slowly seeking out a bit more non fiction to broaden my reading tastes, though fiction will probably dominate.
However, I do feel you can learn somethng from fiction, even if the story is not "true".
Any new additions to your reading "menu", friends?
