Ursamater | 18 comments I like Charlaine Harris. I liked the Sookie Stackhouse books for the first three or so and then lost interest. I like most of her other work much, much better. Currently, I prefer the Harper Connelly series. I'm pleased to recommend this series. Harper is a psychic who finds dead bodies.

Ms. Harris has a monster theme going on that makes her surprisingly dark for a author who writes supposedly "cozy" mysteries. I'm not talking about the obvious and less obvious monsters of Sookie, but the "secret internal monsters that hide inside people you know" kind. But like I said, I like her stuff generally and I don't hate Sookie, I just don't feel the serious love.

BTW, I have not seen any of True Blood.

aahh H.O.N! Can I tell you guys how utterly embarassed I am that I read 5 of them....bleh! I can't stand the lead character yet I couldn't stop reading because I had to know what happened to her dumb ass. Needless to say I got so tired of her whining and straight up stupidity that I could not finish the rest....if I do it's library time aall the way. bleh

Jessica (imahoodieninja) | 170 comments oh... and I COULD NOT for the life of me get into Vampire Diaries. I couldn't finish the first book. No character developement at all. There was supposed to be a love interest in there somewhere but I couldn't let go of the ADHD that I developed while trying so desperately to read this book....
Anyone.....anyone at all......did you feel the same?

message 404: by Morgan (new)

Morgan (morganannie) I hated the Twilight (Twilight, #1) by Stephenie Meyer series.

Also, Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater .

But being a children's librarian, I felt I had to soldier through them.

message 405: by Rafaela (new)

Rafaela (rafahta) | 60 comments I'll never be able to hate Twilight as even though I know it's not all that, it got me reading again.

I didn't read Vampire Academy for a long time, thinking it was like Twilight, but it was awesome.

At the bookstore, right next to the two books above there was City of Bones, and I couldn't even finish reading it. It was awful.

I finished Marked, but hated it every moment of it.

message 406: by Jessica B (new)

Jessica B | 13 comments I'd say at the moment my two least favourite reads have been The Forest of Hands and Teeth (The Forest of Hands and Teeth, #1) by Carrie Ryan and Beautiful Creatures (Caster Chronicles, #1) by Kami Garcia .

I will continue with both series but I just couldn't stand the characters. But I have to find out what happens even if it is going to be painful.

Nicky (KISMET8) | 3 comments Deanne wrote: "Vampire Kisses I thought they were the horrible!!!
As well as Vampire Diaries the first book was ok but it went downhill from there."

Haha! I usually never quit a series, but Vampire Kisses left nothing to the imagination and completely bored me to death....

message 408: by Morgan (new)

Morgan (morganannie) And don't even get me started on Hush, Hush (Hush, Hush, #1) by Becca Fitzpatrick

I started this and *tried* to keep reading but it was so painful I quit shortly after the first chapter.

I know. I expected so much more!!!

message 410: by Cynna (new)

Cynna C (eternal_starlight) | 1 comments Def going to say LKH because after the first nine books in her Anita Blake series the stories turn to crap. I couldn't even get in to the other series once she started making plots to specifically include sex. Gag.

Megan | 198 comments Cynthia wrote: "Def going to say LKH because after the first nine books in her Anita Blake series the stories turn to crap. I couldn't even get in to the other series once she started making plots to specifically ..."

I'm on book 3 right now and really like it so far. I have heard horror stories about how her later books are awful and just sex (and not even good sex scenes). IDK how far I will read in the series, but I'm usually the type that likes to complete series, no matter how painful it is to read, sigh.

I've also heard awful fan encounters with her. She was rude and wouldn't talk to ANYBODY at book signings and was really full of herself. I hate egomaniacs.

I guess the only series I gave up on was Wicked Lovely. I made it through book 2 and couldn't force myself to continue.

message 412: by Heather (new)

Heather | 4 comments I hated Evermore! I did not see the point and a lot of the backstory and motivation for the villain made no sense. The main character was just not interesting, she felt like a spoiled brat. The love interest was interesting and mysterious, but maybe too a little too mysterious. So many unanswered questions about his past and even personality for that matter.

the t.v. series messed me up on that series. I thought I would check out the t.v. version first. I watched about 5 mins. then I decided I didn't want to even bother with the books. so yes i can feel your pain. lol

message 416: by MsBeaglely (new)

MsBeaglely | 118 comments I don't think these would be considered Paranormal, but they definitely should be classifies as horrible.

The first one was The Hunger. Horrible! Horrible!! Horrible!!! I found the book in a box in the basement & knew that it was considered a cult classic. Why? I have no idead.

Memnoch the Devil was so bad it took me over a month to finish, which is unheard of for me

I have to admitt I tried to like it but.... it just didn't work. Many people say the book is contrived. Which a ridiculous thing to say of course it is it is fantasy duh. what annoyed me is that after book 1 things just seemed to go down hill I even read three I just don't really care to much about thecharacters I felt like it was just alot of complaining a nd constantly stuck in this doomed relationship enough new story line Please.
Any way I read the first 3 and then just thought I can't any more

message 423: by Roberta (new)

Roberta Bennett-Mabrey | 31 comments I also LOVED and continue LOVING the BDB!! It's hard to understand how you couldn't love the brothers but that's why there's lots of different books out there I guess!

message 424: by Akaria (new)

Akaria Gale | 101 comments I'm diehard devoted to the BDB but can totally see why other people wouldn't like the series. The names are eyeroll worthy, the slang is ridiculous and product placement is over the top. There's plenty to hate about the BDB. Doesn't matter though. I love my Brothers.

The series that everyone seems to love that I don't care for is the Night Huntress books. The first one was ok then Cat just annoyed the hell outta me.

message 425: by Roberta (new)

Roberta Bennett-Mabrey | 31 comments I had a difficult time reading the Demonica series just because it was such a downer all the time nothing but bad seemed to happen to her.

When you say "her", which her? In all of them, bad things happen, but it all turns around beautifully and there's always a good HEA. Of course that's my opinion and you're entitled to yours. :-) I was just wondering.

message 427: by Camilla (new)

Camilla (millaz) Wow.. BDB and Demonica in the "worst I've ever read" thread? How the hell does that happen? lol

BDB is just pure awesomeness and Demonica is delicious IMO..

The worst I've read would be the 2nd book in the Evermore series.. Wow.. That was bad..

message 428: by Roberta (new)

Roberta Bennett-Mabrey | 31 comments I must apologize for my brain malfunction because I did not mean Demonica series but the Georgina Kincaid Succubus series and that poor woman has a miserable life. I have only read the first three and stopped some day maybe I'll try the others.

Oh, ok! I haven't read those yet, though I heard they're good. I'll have to watch out for the depressing stuff, lol. Thanks for clarifying... I couldn't imagine Demonica would make a worst series list, but then BDB and some of my other favorites did. But like I said... everyone's entitled to their opinions.

I second that! I Love the series (even though I'm only on book 4) but the slang! Like PLEASE just STOP! And 50 cent being hardcore rap?? uuummm...No...
Other than that the story is great and I will definitely be reading the rest!

Me too! I saw just a couple shows and I'm like man I HAVE to read the books....couldn't get through the first one! It's a shame when the TV show is WAAAYY better! smh

message 432: by Crystalmarie (new)

Crystalmarie (CrystalsNovels) I hated BDB. I was lucky enough to find the whole series in mint cond. at a second hand store for under 5 bucks, so i picked them up.... omgosh, no wonder the books were in mint cond. whom ever donated them must have felt the same way i did. WHAT A DRAG! but to each their own, i looovvvvveeee Charlaine Harris, and some people hate her writing. So to give BDB credit, there are tons of fans, i don't need to be one thats for sure. :)

message 433: by Janet (new)

Janet | 1 comments I was extremely bored by Outlander. I bought the audio version and the reader does a great job but I found it painfully boring to listen to. I found the couple boring, the setting boring, and finally gave up because books aren't supposed to hurt.

message 434: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I have to say I love the Outlander series, but when I listened to the narration -- I thought it was done horribly and I couldn't focus.

message 435: by BaileyBones (new)

BaileyBones | 25 comments Probably the Chicagoland Vampires books I read the first one and it was absolutly horrible there was no romance and it doesnt even seem like she is a vampire at all

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 2659 comments Mod
Bailey--Chicagoland Vamps is UF so there doesn't tend to be a lot of romance in most of them. If there is, it usually progresses over multiple books.

Oh--and I'm another one in the hate, hate, hate the BDB books. Sorry, just could NOT get into them, even tho I thought the idea was great. Maybe if there had been less horribly unrealistic slang, no cringe worthy names, better editing. . . .

For me Twilight was the worst book in the series. The books got more interesting as I continued to read them. By the time I read the last one I was glad I stuck it out through that first book.

Just put the H in random spots! It has nothing to do with the pronunciation, so its ok!

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 451 comments I've tried, but I just can't get into Kenyon's Dark Hunter series. I don't like the characters or the world she's created. Bummer. I was so hoping to find another series to like.

Oh Amen...I find Kenyon SO dull and repetitive. I can hear the sound of a million teeth gnashing as I write this, but really, I've tried. The only character I have any time for in that series is ...Simi..? Is that her name? She's halfway amusing. Everything else is so simplistic and unchallenging.

The other series that makes me want to lay rat poison down is the Dante Valentine series by Lilith Saintcrow. Argh.

Lovely purge! Now off to strew rainbows on the wall and give away free unicorns.

You know it is funny I felt that way to initailly I only read to book two but there are great fun scenes in the stories ao much so that I felt like some of the story line was a little weak and strung together with lots of FUN scenes.
Tired to Cassie Palmer did not love it

Oh, thank heaven I'm not alone! I cannot get into that series either. I'm trying...and I do want to read Acheron's book, but it's not doing it for me. I also only made it through 1/2 of LKH's first Anita Blake novel :-(.

I loved the BDB, IAD, Night Huntress and Twilight series if that shows my "taste" in paranormal. I've also read all of the Sookie books, Demonica and Chicagoland Vampire books. Oh, and I love the Vampire Academy books too, but it took awhile...the past 3 books have been my favorites.

message 448: by Sandra J (last edited Sep 18, 2010 10:06AM) (new)

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 451 comments I know a lot of you will give a series at least a couple of books to capture your interest, and many of you feel the need to finish a series even if you hate it. That I do not get at all. If the book sucks after three chapters, it's gone. And I'm being generous with three chapters. I won't waste my money or my time when there's so much else out there (not to mention in the TBR mountain).
