Patty Barnett (barnettfineart) I don't know the story but hope someone comes up with the title. Sounds like a good one, would like to read it. Actually I'd like the title of the compilation - the entire group of stories are good ones

Jackie "the Librarian" | 218 comments I'm not sure this is the right story, it doesn't completely fit, but "Revelations in Black" by Carl Jacobi might be your story. You can find it in the The Penguin Book of Vampire Stories, and probably other horror anthologies as well.

Here's a description:
In a seedy antique shop the narrator finds a curious book velvet-bound book, Three Unicorns and a Pearl, which he learns is the first of a trilogy, written by the proprietor's brother Larla before his death in an insane asylum. Fascinated by it he can make no sense of the text, which does indeed seem to be the ramblings of a madman, until he enters the garden of a run down old house, where a mysterious woman sits at a bench, alone except for a huge dog. The narrator’s interest in reading the other volumes of the trilogy grows into an obsession.

Summer (Romani) | 3 comments Well, it might be a little tough for searching reasons, but... I found a site that has everything that L.P. Hartley has done (even if the story isn't by him, you said "W.S." was in the compilation along with your story...). Anyway, this also lists every anthology that contains any of Hartley's works, along with other author's stories.

Some of them don't contain lists of stories, but one of the titles or covers may jog your memory a bit on the title of the book that holds your particular story. Also, I believe "W.S." was published in 1951, so you could likely skip searching all of the books before then... I know it's a LOT of work, but, if you're really so into this story, don't give up! I wish I could have helped more. Good luck.
