SOLVED. Novel from 80s about a running or cycling race from coast to coast [s]

Back when I owned a bookstore, I read a book--a real page turner--about a very long race. I'm pretty sure it was coast to coast. The organizer had many problems, backers withdrew, etc. I think there was a love interest but that's not what I remember.

It was a really great read, and I've often wanted to find and reread it.

Was it a true story? The official American coast to coast bicycle race is called RAAM, for Race Across America. They list a number of books about it on their merchandise page and I'm sure there are more.

This sounds a lot like Flanagan's Run, a book about a foot-race across the USA during the Depression.
