EXCUSE ME?

Let me know when :) I live in the north-east, in the region of Venice and Padua, but not very far from Ferrara, Bologna, Mantua. It takes me only a couple of hours to get to Florence and 3 to get to Rome, so if you - all of you - happen to visit Italy, I'd be happy to meet you. I could be your guide around the small medieval towns in my countryside :)

Note to self: No bitching about Tab. LOLOL

message 4355: by mc (new)

mc | 1308 comments I decided not to read the preceding 400 odd comments I have unread after this opening classic. I mean, what's going to top that? All right, now I have an image in my head that isn't going to go away.

Aw, don't diss Tab. I drank a lot of Tab in the old days (haven't had a can in a long time). My freshman year of college, that first couple of weeks, I drank a LOT of warm Tab in hot late summer weather. Desperate times. And I never liked beer.

I discovered Fresca about 7-8 years ago. Had never heard of it before then.

I don't drink a lot of soda anymore, but sometimes, there is nothing better than an ice-cold can, especially in the summertime.

Emanuela, how beautiful that area is! Several years ago, I had a workshop in the Lake Garda area. So gorgeous.

ns, I still can't get that image out of my head, fireworks and all.

Jeffrey (formerly-aeros) Finished w/ "Bareback" by Chris Owens...YIKES! Is all I can say.

Now 15% into "Snowball in Hell" by Josh.

Hopefully, a little cool down from my previous read.

Still reeling from the aforementioned... Maybe I need a Fresca.

Did you know that Bareback has a sequel? I haven't read it yet, but I'm looking forward to it. The author also has a handful of free short stories with Jake and Tor on her website.

Yes, it is! Sirmione, Peschiera, Castiglione, Lazise... was it really a workshop? It's a jewel :)

What is the difference between Tab and Diet Coke? Tab is not sold in Italy.

Yeah, the sequel is very good. In some ways it's written more to my taste (more personal life events, less sex scenes - not that sex scenes are ever bad but Bareback was a little over the top.) And yet it also felt a little less raw and emotional, so it didn't hit my delightful angst button quite as squarely.

Noted; I will avoid any mention of the strange things people choose to consume. Especially when said consumers write the wonderful books I really, really want to read. Wait, maybe there is something to this foul-tasting liquid that I should know about...Josh drinks it, Josh writes sooo well...hmmm.

I got dragged off by another unrelated character in the middle of the night to write his story. And Mac and Tony are deep in heated discussions about Mac's latest case and whether they should get married, so I'm letting them stew for a bit.

Not as much sodium in Tab. It's sweeter and flatter and tastes more like coke (although that's not saying a great deal). It was very big when I was a kid and I guess I developed a taste for it (partly because we weren't aloud to drink diet sodas). :-)

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ (manutwo) | 1768 comments Interesting, thank you! I realized I missed a lot of pop culture reference :)

Hmph. If Josh recommended bungee-jumping before editing, would you do that, too? (/ends mother-like nagging voice) :)

Blaine (blainedarden) Josh wrote: "(partly because we weren't aloud to drink diet sodas)"

I didn't allow my kids diet sodas either.
Personally I really don't see the point of replacing sugar with sweeteners, it ruins the taste and really isn't as healthy as people think they are
(of course, since I'm not allowed either sugar or sweeteners these days ...)

And Tab's not sold here either (surprise surprise)
As for pop culture references ... I seem to be sorely lacking in knowledge of those *sigh*

You never know. Sometimes just winging it seems impossible, and if someone laid out a short-cut to success, even bungee-jumping, I just might be suckered into it. (Why should I be smarter than the rest of the world? Oh, yeah, because I am the mom of two teenagers, for one thing.)

I felt that way, too, but it had the potential to be more angsty. I kind of missed that -- and you know I'm not always into angst.

Mandapanda | 76 comments Just finished Amy Lane's newest release A Solid Core of Alpha. I love Scifi in general so I was looking forward to this book. In fact the Scifi setting is really there to allow the dramatic events of the MC's life to unfold. The situation couldn't have happened in any other setting. It's a poignant story of how prolonged isolation from other people can affect someone. Really made me think. Plus it was a bit of a tear-jerker. I loved it.

Heh. I am exactly the opposite. I tell mine sugar is white death. And artificial sweeteners might have health risks, but we know sugar is evil. Perhaps our kids will meet at college and yours will be drinking diet soda and mine will be drinking the syrup.

Traci Very late to the thread (and the group), but then again, better late than never! I just finished "The Happiness Project" by Gretchen Rubin - interesting book. Learned a new genre, too: "stunt non-fiction". All the books that have the writer trying something for a year (or a specific time period) are classed as stunt non-fiction. Hmmm..... perhaps Josh can try something like this? "My year of Tab"?

Nope, for Josh that would be a normal year. Now if I tried it that might qualify.

How about he writes "My year without Tab"? No, wait, that would probably make him insanely cranky, which would mean no new Josh books, which is NOT acceptable! lol...

My heart actually dropped when I read that first line. :-D We did have about six months when Tab was unavailable anywhere in the entire Los Angeles county. I think they must have been changing packaging or something. IT WAS TERRIBLE.

LOL. Sounds like me when I got pregnant the first time and everybody (and I do mean *everybody*) was all "Oh, noes, pregnant women Must Not Have ANY Caffeine!" And I had a 2-a-day Super-Jumbo-Sized Coke habit...and they wanted me to go cold turkey.

Yeah, didn't happen. What made it worse was, every time the DH and I went out to eat (which we did fairly often back then) he would sit across from me drinking a coke while I had water, or worse, Sprite. Bastard. He never did understand why I got so pissy.

message 4386: by mc (new)

mc | 1308 comments Tracy, that makes me laugh - in the old days, when my mom was pregnant with me, they still drank! and here they were forcing you to give up caffeine cold turkey.

Josh, do you remember that Tab energy drink about 10 years ago (maybe?!), which I think was supposed to compete with Red Bull. That wasn't too appetizing.

I've really got to find some Tab. I think I've forgotten the taste. I went off sodas for a good long while, but now I'm back in the habit of having a couple of Coke Ones every week.

"Moderate caffeine" ... Yeah caffine is NOT my friend. I supplement my rage with (moderate) chocolate intake a good Josh Lanyon book. Works every time.

And 11 years (or so) ago, I didn't know who Josh Lanyon *was*. Or is. Or whatever. Now, I just have to remember to stop with the caffeine at 2, so I can get enough sleep, 'cause I have to get up at 6 to get my Barbarian Horde on the school bus, and it comes awfully early in the morning...especially when you stay up till 4 reading b/c OMG the book is Just That Good.

Traci Josh, I actually used to drink Tab as a kid. My dad was a type-2 diabetic, and back in the 70s, that was pretty much it for diet soda. I don't remember hating it, but I have to admit, I've found others I like better. Right now my diet drink of choice is Pepsi Max.... as for docs telling you to give stuff up when preggers, yeah, my mom was told to give up smoking, then the doc changed his mind when she went a little nutty! Told her to just cut back as much as possible, due to health risks, preemie chances, low birth weight, etc. Well, I was 3 weeks late and showed up at 9 lbs!

My favorite non-caffeinated drink it Stewart's Root Beer. It comes in a brown bottle that, from a distance, looks like a beer bottle. When we lived on post, I used to sit outside with one of those and a book in the morning, watching my sons (2 & 3 years old at the time) playing in the front yard.
