mc | 1308 comments Aw, ns, am I too contrary?

Kaje, congratulations on the new book - listening to the writers around here, I get the feeling that regardless of how often you're published, there's a twinge of something, living up to expetabtions, anxiety, whatever that happens at that point.

If you all didn't have those feelings though, you wouldn't be able to create the characters you do.

Let us know what you think of Spin Out. Hard Fall is one of my favorites of Buchanan's. Joe is such a great character and a unique narrative voice.

ns (vedi) Turner and Turner: One Good Turn -- Green

Wow. This was a freebie??? You have to be kidding me.

Easily a candidate for one of the best m/m books of the year for me. I'm still in its rippling wake, that post-book, manic slipstream and can only shake my head in disbelief. One of the few books I'd gladly pay $7.99 for, unlike practically every other wallet-grasping unworthy out there.

Do yourself a favor. Chuck your phones in a drawer, gather up some cool lemonade or your choice of reading beverage, lock yourself in a room and put a Don't Disturb Me sign out front. You won't want to be interrupted on this mad slalom ride through JCPish land -- just with less sex and more Freud. I'd write more but the sequel's finished downloading on my Kindle...gotta run..

ns (vedi) Huge thanks to Becky (I searched the archives this time) who pointed us to the MLR Press freebie on this list a while ago. Many thanks, Becky!

Becky, which Kindle is it? If it's the orig Kindle1, I have a spare cord I could ship you tmrw. My Kindle 1 died, and Amazon upgraded me to a Kindle 3 for $60 (no free replacement, sadly). So I have a Kindle 1 power cable sitting uselessly on my desk.

If it's the Kindle 3, than you should be able to get the cord anywhere (it's a standard microUSB <-> USB cable, though you'll need your Kindle power plug to connect it through).

I don't have a Kindle 2 but I believe it also takes a microUSB <-> USB cable, so you should be able to get a replacement anywhere (for < $5, usually).

Trying to finish it sometime this weekend and I will definitely write down something about that. It's been a little hectic since I'll be working this weekend, plus I'm juggling between this book, the free stories at M/M Romance group, as well as a mainstream urban fantasy book by Sonya Bateman

I loved this one! The sequal, Turncoat is great too, so you can read on if you want :)

message 4009: by ns (last edited Jul 22, 2011 05:57PM) (new)

ns (vedi) Wasn't Turncoat great? It's rare that a sequel exceeds your expectations in that fashion, but it certainly did mine.

Also loved Golden Boys. It's slighter, more a novella, and you feel things get over far too soon, but it's still so weird and fun (and crazily interesting African-American characters) that it's still irresistable.

Wow, ns, thanks! I really appreciate the offer. But it's a K2. Amazon has shipped the cord, so I think I'm just going to have to wait until Tuesday. :( My mother and I went on a little shopping spree at Borders today, so I think I'll survive. :)

Speaking of, if anyone is shopping around for an ereader, Borders is selling any Kobo ereaders in stock at a discount. Only 10% at the moment, but that still puts one at just over $100. And the discounts will get steeper in the next few weeks, assuming there are any left.

And ns, I'm glad to hear that Turner & Turner: One Good Turn is good. I'll have to bump it up my list!

Reading The Summoner (Dominic Grey, #1) by Layton Green Picked it because stories with DSS protags are few and far between, but this is pretty much an example of why most self-published work is...self-published.

I will say that it's a solid premise.

It's actually kind of fascinating from a writing standpoint, and if I ever get time, I'll dissect it thoroughly because I think that process would be useful for some of you. It's what happens when someone knows enough about writing to think they now know it all.

After reading the posts about this series, I'm soooo tempted to read it, but fantasy is not my favorite sub-genre. How elaborate is the world-building? Are we talking half-man/half-beast MCs or human MCs with a dose of magic and mysticism?

message 4021: by mc (new)

mc | 1308 comments I know I will buy this series, but I keep thinking I should wait until it's done, especially given the mass of unread books I have.

I saw a discount on a book I've wanted to read for a while, in ebook format, which I already have in (heavy) hardcover. Should I buy the ebook? Or just commit to reading the book at home?

You know, a lot of fantasy leaves me cold, and I think that's because so often real characterization and exploration of relationships is skimmed over in favor of world-building and magic systems and blah, blah, blah. And not that these things are not crucial in fantasy, but the number one thing I read for (be it mystery or fantasy or westerns or biology books) are the characters and any relationships they might have. So I am OFTEN disappointed. Especially in biology books.

But Ginn is the rare mix of good solid original world building as well as the more important (to me) emotional content. Her characters are real and engaging and you desperately care about what happens to them -- nowhere more than in Rifter.

I think that most m/m readers will enjoy her work, whether they like fantasy or not, in the way that so many m/m readers enjoy my work whether they like mystery or not. (In fact, that has to be one of the compliments I hear most frequently -- I hate mystery but I like YOU) :-D

One thing I give him credit for is his research. I know how hard he worked for it because it's difficult finding the kind of stuff on the DSS that really fleshes a story and the characters out.

The funny thing about research is a writer doesn't get credit for all the stuff they get right. That's taken for granted. But get one little thing wrong! OUCH. :-P

But I think he did a good job on that.

I loved this story too! I've read others that have tried to impart a story through the person who has a lower IQ, and this one is by far the best. I just adored Al and his voice. I loved reading of others through his eyes, and picking up on the subtle clues he doesn't even know he's giving away.

I just got back fm vac; am skimming to catch up.

Re Ginn Hale--I couldn't agree more. She is such a breath of fresh air when it comes to m/m fantasy; isn't she? I thoroughly enjoyed her White Lord series; it was wonderful.

Have you (or any of y'all) read the Jaida Jones and Danielle Bennett series; it starts w/Have Mercy? I've been enjoying hang out of it. The first one, Have Mercy, contains the only overtly and front-and-center m/m romance. It was very good. But I'm not sure the next two books weren't even better. All have at their center a powerful m/m relationship of some kind. The second does not involve a romance, but it's hilarious. These books are not comedies; but that one had moments that just blew me away for funny.

One other thing--Have you, Josh, (or any other contributers here) read Map of the Harbor Islands yet? C'mon, people! Chop, chop! Pls keep me informed.

message 4031: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper Havemercy was good, some unique world-building and great characters. I also like the second one even better. Shadow Magic is lighter and funnier and doesn't take itself too seriously while still having a great story to tell and wonderful characters narrating it. I haven't read the third one yet.

I've been working on clearing out some of my non-m/m TBR, and today I finished Tempest Rising. I don't know why I waited so long to read this one. Very entertaining, not a sex-fest like so many urban fantasy books lately, funny, and a strong female lead without being a ridiculous bad-ass. I do think she ended up with the wrong guy at the end, but as the first book in a series there's plenty of time to correct that!

I'm reading so little right now. It's really disappointing because for a while there I had a little free time in the evenings and could actually read and we were having those great Book of the Month discussions. Now I'm buried and all I can't think is I'm paying the price of taking that free reading time. BUT after this month life will be something close to normal again. All things being relative. Thank you for mentioning that you are reading Ghost Story! It made me pop over to my library's website to see if they had the ebook. I figured I'd at least get on the waiting list. Low and behold, there were copies available! Woo hoo! (They must have just put it up, because if it had been available for long there'd be a list.) I never do this, but I bought it just for the cover. I know. Terribly shallow of me - but it is a good cover. But it turned out to be worth it for the story; a very nice little book. I'm still happy to have Kindle-sized a copy of the cover, though.
