What else are you reading? (June 2010 - May 2013) *closed*

Actually, mine seems quite self actualized.

Actually, mine seems quite self actualized."
Mine might be closer to that, if Brideshead Revisited would quit bickering with The God Delusion

Awww, you're my new best friend, lol
I'm hopeless lately because of a series of unfortunate events. If something positive happens, I'll change my name back to something more cheerful.
I'd like to change my name to Emanuela Butler, though, lol

Aww... *hugs* You know I would hand delivered Butler and all hot guys in your photo album, bound & gagged, if I could right? ;)

I'm a Ianto Jones fan :)
Or ... a Gareth David-Lloyd actually.
Every time I think my obsession has passed ... and then I hear him sing again and I go ... *guh*

I know I know :D

Pray for me. Since I've been downloading free books to my ereader, I've decided to start reading Ulysses by James Joyce. I don't think Jack Harkness is in that one, more's the pity. Maybe Gabriel Byrne, given the country.

Yes! re Gerard Butler (and Daniel Craig). Here's one for you. Did y'all see Butler in that dragon movie...with that Batman actor who's so good. My impression, the makers left it to the audience to decide if the two were "partners." And a very nice early role for Butler.

Also, have you read Theo's story? Not the same drama as Mann of My Dreams, but very sweet, I thought.

MC Can you pm me your email addy and I'll send the pdf to you. I actually loved Theo's story. I've read it about 3 times now and it grows on me more each time. It's quite poignant and sweet.

I found it impossible not to read the series straight through, Susan (I recommend getting hold of Fish and Chips!).

I actually bought the original Nook the other day (since you can return it) to compare it to the Touch, which is what I originally bought, but I'm going to return it. I'm already spoiled by how incredibly light it is. I just wish one could do more with shelves an the like...but at least those are software issues. The hardware has glitches, but I think they (ereaders) all do.
TMI, right?

The email part drives me crazy because even though i delete mail it keeps coming back as new...nuts i tell you.

I really don't know about the people here, Susan...in less than two months, they've convinced me to buy an ereader, read books I've been saving for a special occasion, and perhaps, even starting writing again.
It's a dangerous place, I tell you. Be warned.

mc, come over to the dark side. Write. You know you want to.
That reminds me, I should probably try to organize the writing day for tomorrow.

The m/m group is doing a massive free anthology. I'm too tired to explain it coherently, but here's the thread about it.

I had seen the link, actually, but it doesn't let me view those pages (as I'm not a member of the group).

Ah, sorry. I forgot it's a private group. Basically, there were pictures, and Dear Author letters, and a bunch of people volunteered to write stories based on the pictures and letters. And then sometime in July those stories will be posted, and I guess the whole collection will be made available again through ARe.
I guess that really wasn't all that hard to explain. I'm just not firing on all cylinders tonight.
Read

There are around 110 stories, and they will all eventually be part of an anthology, but I think that's not until October. A lot of authors are going to also offer their works for free on their websites, I think? But I can't remember the rules around that. Not until after the anthology comes out? It's all going to be free, at any rate.
I would recommend you join the group, ns. :)

Wow, The Violet and the Tom looks good. I love alternative history stuff.

I have a friend who's looking for good BDSM, but I don't know her well enough to be sure exactly what she's interested in. I might rec this, though.

Thanks, Becky, and I hear ya, Cleon, Kaje and Anne. I really do. But I have to say, it's just logistically impossible for me.
I can barely keep up with this forum as it is. I have very little spare time, and even the little that I participate here cuts into my reading time (which was carved out of my sleeping time to start with). There's no way I could take on an additional timesink that is certain to be (judging by the group membership numbers, if nothing else, which scare me).
And truth be told, I figure anything interesting will probably filter its way to here, eventually.
Reading used to be a pretty solitary and private activity for me. Even this much sharing is going way out of my comfort zone, honestly. I'm happier reading than I am discussing a book in public - just the way that I'm built, I suppose. Not that I don't enjoy writing about books occasionally.
I do look fwd to reading those stories at some point. That will be fun :).

I've finished the Masks series by Hayden Thorne. The 1st book is

Then I read

Cream of the m/m crop: JCP, Kimberling, Hale, Derr, Fox.
I will just say that Night might just be the most beautiful book I've ever read. I did start crying around the second line of the foreword, though. And then you just sit with all this stuff in your mind, all the detritus of this immense mental fatigue bearing down on you, choked up by this severe emotional arteriosclerosis and think to yourself you may never read another book again. NS goes to find icecream.

Also, have you ever read Victor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning? You might appreciate it.
I finally bought a Megan Derr book. You and others have been recommending her so much, I thought I'd give it a try.

Ah, no, no organization or planning goes into that, I just write down what book I've read after I've read it. I just do it on my own in a simple text log instead of using the Goodreads site like everyone else (which I abuse mostly to track my paperback purchases).
I'd go mad if I didn't keep a record of what I read and what I've bought with the amount of reading and buying I do. I suspect I'd be picking up the same book to read a dozen times with that sieve I have for a memory, not to mention buying books I already own.
I liked the Banis books, but as I mentioned earlier in this thread somewhere and the ensuing discussion, they did lose a bit of their lustre when I found out they were recent books (2009). They definitely felt very dated, and somewhat derivative, as a result.

No such luck, mc, a downside of living so far off the usual speaker circuit.
"Also, have you ever read Victor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning? You might appreciate it."
No, I have not. Thanks for the rec, I'll look it up, it sounds interesting.

Ooh, I'm glad! Which one did you get? She has only one real dud that I didn't like (The King's Harem), and the rest have varied from decent to adorable.
They are all wonderfully written, though, she's a very polished writer. You do have to frame them and read them appropriately, though -- they are not exactly the m/m genre -- they are fairy tales, charming fables or more complex fantasy (Prisoner, Bound).

No, I have not. Thanks for the rec, I'll look it up, it sounds interesting. "
Victor Frankl was a survivor who had lost everyone in the concentration camp during Nazi period.
He was one of existential psychologists and he formed his theory as the result of his experience in the camp. Shortly, he felt that a man needed to have a meaning in his life and he would be able to endure anything.
He's a very great man and it's a good book. Unlike many philosophy/ psychology books, the book is easy to understand. It does contain some details on his experience in the concentration camp.

Thanks for the info, Cleon..sounds pretty interesting. I'll definitely look it up.

Reading-wise, I just plan to putz around for the next couple of days. But then on Friday the next Lady Julia Grey title, The Dark Enquiry, will be available for Kindle. I can't wait! I love a mystery series with a slowly building romance (like AE), and this one definitely qualifies. I absolutely adore Brisbane.

Cannot say anything about it yet, since I have only been in chapter 1. But the blurb sounds promising

Sounds very interesting. Let us know what you think of it. I am currently reading Counterpoint: Dylan's Story.
