John (arkbear) | 322 comments I've been reading Bob the Book, chiefly because I was curious about what wins the Lambda Literary Best Debut Fiction category these days. Completely charming, especially if you hoard old books like I do. But it does make me feel odd reading it on a Kindle. If books have personalities, the Kindle must have one hell of a case of multiple personality disorder.

Mine might be closer to that, if Brideshead Revisited would quit bickering with The God Delusion

I'm hopeless lately because of a series of unfortunate events. If something positive happens, I'll change my name back to something more cheerful.

I'd like to change my name to Emanuela Butler, though, lol

mc | 1308 comments Sorry to hear that Emanuela.

Pray for me. Since I've been downloading free books to my ereader, I've decided to start reading Ulysses by James Joyce. I don't think Jack Harkness is in that one, more's the pity. Maybe Gabriel Byrne, given the country.

Yes! re Gerard Butler (and Daniel Craig). Here's one for you. Did y'all see Butler in that dragon movie...with that Batman actor who's so good. My impression, the makers left it to the audience to decide if the two were "partners." And a very nice early role for Butler.

I found it impossible not to read the series straight through, Susan (I recommend getting hold of Fish and Chips!).

message 3718: by Susan65 (new)

Susan65 I probably will but I have a crazy tendency to read multiple books at the same time. I am currently half way through Vampire in Atlantis as well...not sure why I do this. I also wish Fish and Chips was available on my Nook...I hate when Barnes and Nobles does'nt offer all books in a series and I have to search elsewhere.

message 3719: by mc (new)

mc | 1308 comments Susan, I didn't buy an ereader until I had amassed - and I do mean amassed - hundreds of ebooks, mostly in pdf format, in far better priced and complete environs than B&N. It actually doesn't occur to me now to buy an m/m book at B&N. But I am very new to the Nook, so I am definitely not the right person to talk about this issue!

message 3720: by Susan65 (new)

Susan65 How did you read them? On a computer?

message 3721: by mc (last edited Jun 25, 2011 11:48AM) (new)

mc | 1308 comments Yes, Susan, and that made me VERY used to backlighting. I am starting, just starting to get used to e-ink. I think I may keep this thing, though it isn't perfect, especially where sideloading is concerned. And B&N customer service isn't the best, though I have found the people in the stores to be terrific.

I actually bought the original Nook the other day (since you can return it) to compare it to the Touch, which is what I originally bought, but I'm going to return it. I'm already spoiled by how incredibly light it is. I just wish one could do more with shelves an the like...but at least those are software issues. The hardware has glitches, but I think they (ereaders) all do.

TMI, right?

message 3722: by Susan65 (new)

Susan65 Never too much info. I love my nook color but it does have crazy glitches. I read pdf on my computer at work...since i cant be seen reading a book lol.
The email part drives me crazy because even though i delete mail it keeps coming back as new...nuts i tell you.

message 3723: by mc (new)

mc | 1308 comments Ah, no email here. I bought the original nook to compare and contrast because the people who have it love it SO much, but I think it might be better to stick with the newer model.

I really don't know about the people here, Susan...in less than two months, they've convinced me to buy an ereader, read books I've been saving for a special occasion, and perhaps, even starting writing again.

It's a dangerous place, I tell you. Be warned.

The m/m group is doing a massive free anthology. I'm too tired to explain it coherently, but here's the thread about it.

They did one for Christmas last year that you can still download for free from ARe.

Ah, sorry. I forgot it's a private group. Basically, there were pictures, and Dear Author letters, and a bunch of people volunteered to write stories based on the pictures and letters. And then sometime in July those stories will be posted, and I guess the whole collection will be made available again through ARe.

I guess that really wasn't all that hard to explain. I'm just not firing on all cylinders tonight.

Kaje Harper There's lots of good stuff in the m/m romance group, so yeah, join. The Christmas anthology had great stories and this one has writers like Neil Plakcy, Amy Lane, Jade Archer, Kate Sherwood...It will be out for free eventually (or some of it; we have 113 stories coming) but the group gets them first. (Happy I-can't-wait-till-July-1 dance...) There are other great discussions and resources too, although if you don't like graphic pix then beware. This group definitely needs the no-minors precaution.

There are around 110 stories, and they will all eventually be part of an anthology, but I think that's not until October. A lot of authors are going to also offer their works for free on their websites, I think? But I can't remember the rules around that. Not until after the anthology comes out? It's all going to be free, at any rate.

I would recommend you join the group, ns. :)

ns (vedi) Anne wrote: "I would recommend you join the group, ns. :) "

Thanks, Becky, and I hear ya, Cleon, Kaje and Anne. I really do. But I have to say, it's just logistically impossible for me.

I can barely keep up with this forum as it is. I have very little spare time, and even the little that I participate here cuts into my reading time (which was carved out of my sleeping time to start with). There's no way I could take on an additional timesink that is certain to be (judging by the group membership numbers, if nothing else, which scare me).

And truth be told, I figure anything interesting will probably filter its way to here, eventually.

Reading used to be a pretty solitary and private activity for me. Even this much sharing is going way out of my comfort zone, honestly. I'm happier reading than I am discussing a book in public - just the way that I'm built, I suppose. Not that I don't enjoy writing about books occasionally.

I do look fwd to reading those stories at some point. That will be fun :).

Cream of the m/m crop: JCP, Kimberling, Hale, Derr, Fox.

ns (vedi) Kaje wrote: "Wow, you're organized. I never plan more than one book ahead, and rarely remember what I read when. Let us know what you think of the Banis. I've been considering diving into those."

Ah, no, no organization or planning goes into that, I just write down what book I've read after I've read it. I just do it on my own in a simple text log instead of using the Goodreads site like everyone else (which I abuse mostly to track my paperback purchases).

I'd go mad if I didn't keep a record of what I read and what I've bought with the amount of reading and buying I do. I suspect I'd be picking up the same book to read a dozen times with that sieve I have for a memory, not to mention buying books I already own.

I liked the Banis books, but as I mentioned earlier in this thread somewhere and the ensuing discussion, they did lose a bit of their lustre when I found out they were recent books (2009). They definitely felt very dated, and somewhat derivative, as a result.

No such luck, mc, a downside of living so far off the usual speaker circuit.

No, I have not. Thanks for the rec, I'll look it up, it sounds interesting.

"I finally bought a Megan Derr book. You and others have been recommending her so much, I thought I'd give it a try."

Ooh, I'm glad! Which one did you get? She has only one real dud that I didn't like (The King's Harem), and the rest have varied from decent to adorable.

They are all wonderfully written, though, she's a very polished writer. You do have to frame them and read them appropriately, though -- they are not exactly the m/m genre -- they are fairy tales, charming fables or more complex fantasy (Prisoner, Bound).

Victor Frankl was a survivor who had lost everyone in the concentration camp during Nazi period.

He was one of existential psychologists and he formed his theory as the result of his experience in the camp. Shortly, he felt that a man needed to have a meaning in his life and he would be able to endure anything.

He's a very great man and it's a good book. Unlike many philosophy/ psychology books, the book is easy to understand. It does contain some details on his experience in the concentration camp.

message 3748: by Becky (new)

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1052 comments I just finished A to Z by Marie Sexton. I wasn't sure that I was going to like it. I didn't particularly like Zach in the sample, but I loved Strawberries for Dessert so I decided to give it a chance. It was kind of different, but I liked Zach quite a bit once he finally pulled his head out of his butt, and I liked Angelo from the start. He's definitely rough around the edges, but he's a good person, and smart. His thoughts about Matt and Jared (the main characters from Promises) and Zach were really interesting.

Reading-wise, I just plan to putz around for the next couple of days. But then on Friday the next Lady Julia Grey title, The Dark Enquiry, will be available for Kindle. I can't wait! I love a mystery series with a slowly building romance (like AE), and this one definitely qualifies. I absolutely adore Brisbane.
