What else are you reading? (June 2010 - May 2013) *closed*

I guess I should read Conquest next. When is our discussion? This weekend or next?

Talking about book discussion, I don't think I can participate this month with the looming of HJD. It's fun, but still a lot of work to be done before my story is ready for submission!

Yes, maybe that's it. I think it is also that your writing style is very -efficient in the use of words maybe?-There is no reason to skim fast or look for the best parts. So it is a pleasure to read every word and relaxing as well.
I suck at writing unless it is a directive of how to climb a ladder without causing a huge work comp claim. I hope you understand what I am trying to convey.
Oh, I also thought your use of the dreamlike writing was a brilliant way to get across Swift's state of mind.
You should be teaching our next generation. Truly.

Second this! I think you have the most efficient style as a writer. No wasted words, nothing to skim over.

Poor kid.

:)
Filled with suspense are they? She tells me The Prince is required reading for dictators and presidents. I think she was trying to call me a dictator.

I think it's next weekend. I hope Jesse and Evan from Conquest cheer you up after the trauma of In the Company of Shadows...:(

This is on my to-buy list. Is it good?

I've not made to much progress...you know work and all that...but yeah it's really good so far!

For the record, that is a very useful skill.

Thank you both very much!

It reminds of when my dad was young - they used to go every week to the movies to see the serials (Flash Gordon and the like), and he tells me how exciting that was, but of course, each week ended on a cliff-hanger, which made him and his friends crazy!
I'll be waiting a couple of months, though, at least, because I can't imagine that they will be writing quickly.
And in all seriousness, I have to thank you for recommending this book. What I've read via recommendations: Mann of My Dreams, In the Company of Shadows, Rock Lane Cooper's Mike and Danny series, and a couple of other 'online' writers have all been so worthwhile (other than the one who shall go nameless). Keep 'em coming! You guys have great taste!

Hey, I hope that you purchased all the G.Hale books from weightle..."
Okay, of the books I do own, it's only the anthologies that are from other publishers (ARe specifically). So, I think you're safe... at least to my knowledge. I hear that there are such sites, but I do not know where to find them, and wouldn't use them if I did. I have too many friends as authors to see them lose income to support such places.

me neither, care to share?"
I'd talked about making a point of finding new/unknown-to-me writers and her name popped up. Usually someone unknown to me is known to you all.

@mc - Just saw your post.
Was offline yesterday reading CUTYS.
The discussion begins Saturday June 25.

Hmmm. I was so much more socially conscious in high school. I can see my high school self choosing those books.
Wish her luck. :)

I've heard of him (her?) but never read the books. I think they're on my wish-list though.

That's good to hear. You know, piracy is an inevitable byproduct of ebooks. Piracy is annoying and sad. But bootlegging--you know stealing somebody's stuff and actually charging for it instead of just giving it away is a whole other situation.

Hey, thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed them. To answer your question, because of my Blind Eye Books editing schedule, I will not have a book release in 2011. However, I am contracted to write Bellingham Mysteries 4 for Loose Id, which will release April 2012.
And speaking of Blind Eye Books, as a writer, I'll be contributing to the Blind Eye Books shared world project called The Irregulars. The other authors are Josh, Ginn Hale and Astrid Amara. The Irregulars will be released in March 2012.
Other than that, I'm writing a sequel to Ghost Star Night, but have no idea when that might be released...or finished. :)

Yeah, I've never understood that.
A couple of years ago I as looking for a Stargate Atlantis DVD and what I thought was a second hand version, turned out to be a copy.
Luckily I found out before I bought it.
I'm still on the fence about Ginn's series.
I want to have it, but I don't want to read it until the series is complete.
So, it's on my wishlist, but I'm not sure when I'll buy it ... yet

I'm a huge manga, anime and HK action fan and so in my 20's I ended up owning a lot of bootleg VHS tapes without ever really understanding that the were not authorized copies. Then when I found out I just felt really bad. The lure to buy bootlegs is strong though, especially for media that isn't commercially translated into English. DMP (Digital Manga Press) actually has an awesome program going now where they're trying to bring scalalators into the legitimate publishing fold. So far it seems to be working. The publisher is an awesome guy.
And RE: Rifter... Well, I respect your decision... but don't you want to read the kissing scene in Book Three? Don't you? I bet you do.... (dangles Book Three in front of computer screen.)

I do! I do! I CANNOT WAIT,.
Even though I am making myself wait because of deadlines. But this next chapter is my treat to myself.

LOL
Since I'm still reading

and still need to read

But keep dangling that kissing scene in front of me, and who knows, it might make me buy it sooner ;)

I'm in awe of your discipline :)
Mmm, since I finished my 'Hot July Days' story last night ... I do earn a present ...

*shakes head* Truly unforgivable, Josh. What would Prof Swift said? :P

Uh huh. Obviously someone who never tried to buy a kilt. ;-)

In kilts? ..." In his interview on JesseWave, Damon said he liked to wear Kilts in hot weather. Maybe that's why he added that detail to his character. He associate it with heat & firefighting gets pretty hot (although hopefully he's not wearing kilts on the job) Just guessing here.
I spent half my life hanging out with guys in pipebands and I don't know anyone who likes wearing kilts in hot weather! They're wool. Light, medium, or heavy worsted. And expensive. There are utility kilts, of course; I don't know anyone who would actually wear one. :-D But now I'm being a Celtic snob.
Hey, to each his own! It can't be any sillier than some of the things I've put into books.

so, why does that make me think of Jake in a kilt?

Oh no, teasing readers like that must be illegal somewhere!
Jake is Irish, but you'd never get him into one of those saffron or emerald kilts. Although he'd look good, no doubt about it. :-D

*raises eyebrow*
do I dare ask how you know this?
Actually, I have a thing for male skirts or man skirts or whatever the hell they want to call it. The ankle length ones rather than kilt length.
Don't know why, but show me a good looking man in a skirt, and I'll be drooling (err ... especially if combined with a permanent 5 o'clock shadow)
pity hubby would never go for that lol

In one of her books ZA Maxfield put a couple of chefs into Utilikilts - supposedly nice and cool for the important parts *g*.
But a real kilt: 8 yards or so of real wool are also really heavy. Like Josh I have spent a lot of time around men wearing kilts and I once heard them referred to as "cozy". I don't think even wearing them the proper way could make them cool (temperature, not attitude) *G*. Best worn for Burns Night, which is in January, IMO ;).
Yes, unfortunately in California the vast majority of Scottish events (barring Burns Night and St. Andrews) take place in the sweltering heat of summer. NOT weather designed for wearing wool.
