What else are you reading? (June 2010 - May 2013) *closed*

Here you go, love. That's what he has up on Fiction Press. Some of the stories are not finished and it looks like they won't be. So tread carefully.
That was my take on the story - a handful of issues, but the voice was good. You heard Ryan evolve as the story went along. And I liked Sno's explanation about being a pedophile. For all the offenders out there, how many people (because it isn't just men) are there that suffer from that urge and don't act on it?
Pedophilia is a hard subject to feel any empathy for those afflicted with it. Even a single act brings terrible consequences.
Anne wrote: "So, I finished NonConsensual Love. I really, really liked it. I mean, I had a few issues with believability, but the teenage voice was perfect. And Sno wasn't exactly a dirty old..."
Anne I'm so glad you read it...It's certainly a story gives you lots to think about.
This is by him
it's one of my favorite stories. Certainly my favorite fanfic. I hope you like it. I've pimping this out for weeks now :O)
On another note just read this
last night. Lovely and sweet short story that deals with recovering from addiction.

It's not bad, but it's not Making Promises either.

It's true, it's hard to feel any sympathy, but the idea that there are people out there who feel it but don't act on the impulse has crossed my mind more than once. I can't imagine how awful that would be.
I thought the way he handled Sno's acceptance of his own urges was good. It was just there, and maybe something he could only really be honest about with someone like Ryan.

I read The Girl for Me a few days ago. I liked it as much as (possibly more than) NonConsensual Love, but in a different way. It grew on me.

I liked it alright, but it's not my favorite by her.
I'm going to read the rest of Three Wrong Turns in the Desert tonight. I like it a lot, but I find myself not craving it. It could be I'm not really in the right mood. I love his descriptions of Tunisia.

Ohh I'm starting to read that with a friend tonight, I'm looking forward to it.
About Sno and Ryan...One thing that I kept thinking about was when Sno told Ryan that he had never even admitted to being attracted to men until his late thirties and by then he had missed the chance to be with a young man...

Yes, thanks...heading out for a longish stretch of travel so hope to get a lot of uninterrupted reading done (joy joy), and some internet-free days following (hell hell)...probably will get online again in a week.

Megan Derr (I used the "Contact Us" at LT3 site) said that "Prisoner" was going to be available this week from LT3 (ebook) and in a few weeks (print).
I'll likely get to pick it up next week.

the time passed very pleasantly :O)
I just did two LONNGGG flights this weekend #1 was 9 hours and #2 was 11 hours. Read

My first ticket was 6 + 10 + 8 hours (and that was just airtime), but I've now switched that to 9 + 10, and it's about 40 hours total door to door, but my laptop battery + kindle1 + kindle2 should cover me this time :).
On my last trip, my laptop died in 3 hours, kindle1 lasted 8 hours, and I had 14 excruciating hours of unsleepable*, claustrophobic tedium to survive.

AWw... that sounds horrible! Sorry you had a bad travel. They should provide ebooks to read on plane instead of movies. lol.

@Cleon in the entertainment screen thingy they had a few audiobooks :O)

THIS.
Exactly what I was thinking last month on my US cross country business flight. The papers, magazines etc are unnecessary weight, stale etc. anyway. How much opportunity here to load up a few ereaders with good reading materials and allowing passengers to use/rent??
Publishers are wasting an opportunity -- hog-tied, captive, bored-out-of-their-mind audience dying for any kind of input. If I was a publisher, I'd offer a few free ereaders with a stack of books from my house loaded (for use on plane only, obviously), maybe free in business class only, and for rent in coach.

Wow, I *am* doing KLM this time!! Thanks for telling me! I fly international and US every year, but haven't come across USB support yet. I rely on the layover in Schiphol or Frankfurt to recharge my laptop, usually.

Ohh cool I hope you get one of the good planes! And Schipol now has free wi-fi too in the whole airport, you get like two 30 minutes sessions, just open your browser and it's there. So you could get more books for your next flights :O) And they have the audiobook for The Great Gatsby on their tv thingy :O)

Excellent! Last time I schlepped through Schiphol, I paid some $15 for 5 mins...

Yeah, the internet is new, it was not there last October when I flew through there, but it works fine now. I just used it this weekend. :O)

Yeah, battery life. I can't decide what's worse on long trips -- figuring out how to fit all those paperbacks into my carry-on (and the extra suitcase full of books to read while I'm there) or figuring out battery life.
Actually, I'd rather figure out battery life. I've never been in an airport where I couldn't find a place to plug in for a while. As long as I had an adaptor.
The husband borrowed my iPad last year for a trip to SE Asia, and didn't download any books before he got there, then was pissed when he couldn't once he was there (his email was US).

Ohh I'm starting to read that with a friend tonight, I'm looking forward to it.

But if he hadn't been attracted to young guys (like, way too young) in the first place, he might not have cared. I have two friends who 'became gay' (their terminology) late in life -- one in his 30's and one was almost 50 -- and neither one of them has expressed any need to find a teenage boy.
OTOH, why would they tell me that?

Ohh loved Seth...maybe you'll like him better in the second one.
@Anne, yeah battery life is an issue especially with the kindle cover that has the light in it (it's the one I have) the battery goes FAST.
I was so happy when I got on the plane and saw the USB drive in my seat :O)

That's just freaking brilliant, Cleon. Why doesn't anyone do this, and how much start-up capitol does it take?

But back to the books... I think in my third circle of hell, I'd put people on an airplane, and they'd all get a kindle or other device preloaded from the publisher. It would have thousands and thousands of novels on it, but they would all be the first chapter only. You'd have to buy the book to read the rest. But since this is hell, there's no wifi.
That's my weird way of saying I don't want the publishers preloading a kindle for me before I get on an airplane, I guess. I'd rather it was one of those kiosks like they used to have for rentable DVD players, where you could pick what to preload before you got on the plane. Then once you were off the plane, you would turn in your device at another kiosk.

That's just freaking brilliant, Cleon. Why doesn't any..."
Actually it's very cheap compared to movies. Just plug a Kindle or any e-reader for every seat and fill them with free books. For paid books, you have to pay a bit (not as expensive as retail price, of course, since you don't download the books to your device. You can ask Amazon to sponsor you so you can cut the cost.

Lots of people are attracted to 'abnormal' things or people, it's just a question of what you do with it I guess.
The only thing that bugs me about Sno is that if Ryan hadn't called his parents, Sno might never have come clean about not forcing Ryan into anything. I think if Ryan had made it clear before that the hated what they were doing, Sno would have backed off, but since Ryan was enjoying it....

Now we just have to make sure there are lots of M/M options....
Anne, yes, there would have to be a wide variety of books on these devices. I do like this idea though! But my problem would end up being the selection of books. I'm imagining them being filled with classics like Pride and Prejudice. Which, I know a lot of people like, but I don't, so I want a wide variety. Or an option to put whatever I want on there at the kiosk or on the flight.
You'd just have to make sure they didn't get stolen though, put in an alarm or something similar to a library book, so if you leave the terminal with it the alarm goes off, or once you go past the kiosk.
On the other hand, I tend to pack a lot of books with me anyway. And if I should run out, there's always a notebook and a stray plot bunny floating around to keep me busy. That's the great thing about being a creative writer, I'm rarely bored. lol.

I wouldn't use credit cards with unsecured wi-fi. It's very dangerous. I haven't flown in a while and I have only flown short distance with Air Asia (economical airlines). I prefer to save money for the travel itself, lol, so I don't know about airplane facilities these days.

This is what the outrageous ($500?) security deposit on their credit card is for....

I was on a grand jury for a month, once, and I cannot tell you the number of ways people steal credit card info. I think using a credit card on unsecured wifi is nuts, too. But just handing someone your card is nuts, from what I saw on that grand jury.
Started Three Turns in the Desert last night. Very enjoyable. Neil's strength is setting. I saw that with Mahu too. Terrific research and a real knack for bringing it to life.

Josh, that's exactly what I was thinking with both books! I felt like I was truly there, and yet I couldn't find large sections of boring detail. He's amazing with setting!

Yes, and it's so much FUN.

I had the same reaction. I'm iffy about reading the second book... especially since I can't remember most of the LCaD.
I started the May read... Three Turns in the Desert and had to put it down. I could not get into it.
So now I'm reading Dragon Bound, Thea Harrison.
I finished and really enjoyed both Hell Cop anthologies. All the stories are very good, which is rare in an anthology, IMO.

I know, I'm amazed at how easily he makes me feel like I'm in Tunisia.

Neil made me want to eat couscous and Tunisian food so bad. lol.

From above, I've never read Tamara Allen, but was thinking about trying The Only Gold. It seems that many people here enjoyed it - any other comments? (I know that tastes vary, of course.) Generally, I don't read TONS of historical fiction in this genre, but this looks like a good one to try.
(Since I joined, I have been making a list of the books mentioned here (only in the past few weeks, mind you)). I dare not tell you how long it is.

So, this Failte person, have they written anything else? I did a quick search and came up with nothing.
ETA: Failte has 10 stories on Fictionpress, but he hasn't posted since mid-2009.
