I love Ethan Day and Sno Ho was fantastic!! I've got #2 sitting in the wings waiting for me to rotate the TBR order.

message 1555: by Blaine (new)

Blaine (blainedarden) m/m, m/m/m, m/f/m, m/f. What do I read?

I read my fair share of m/f romance in my early teens, before I realised detectives were way cooler :), and I rarely consciously read them anymore, unless there is romance in the fantasy/detective/sf novels I read. (looking forward to the release of Fury of the Phoenix, I loved Cindy's first novel Silver Phoenix: Beyond the Kingdom of Xia )

I definitely prefer m/m, preferably mystery/suspense/fantasy, but romance and bdsm have their place in my library as well (though I tend to avoid slave stories). I never really know what to say when people ask me why, apart from saying the theme intrigued me, and knowing it's not about two men together being hot. Though, I, very recently, had a small epiphany about the why, that I'm not really ready to share with a crowd, but it did clear up a lot of things for me.

I don't mind m/m/m at all, if written well and more than just pwp. I'm always awed by how some writers make a triad work so well (the same goes for open relationships).

As for m/f/m. If I know it's the main pairing of the book, I'll skip it, it's really not my thing.
But when it's only a small part of the story, like in 'a Vintage Affair' (even though I didn't know about it until I read it), I will read it.

And no, that scene in 'a Vintage Affair' wasn't fun to read, but it was well written and showed so much about the characters involved.
Secretly, though, I was kind of rooting for Cormac to be the one. He kind of reminded me of a young Snape, though I have no idea why. I tend to go for the odd one out, and Cormac definitely fit that description :)
I have no knowledge of wines either, but that didn't bother me at all. (Then again, most of the car makes mentioned in any book are unknown to me, and the last thing I want to do while reading it look them up on the net)

this post became so much larger than I intended ... back to writing now ...

I never thought I'd give anything by Josh a 1 star review. And it pained me to tell him so.
I kept hoping Botelli would give Antonio a set of cement shoes...

message 1559: by Heather C (last edited Mar 19, 2011 06:02AM) (new)

Heather C (heathercook) Andy, if it makes you feel any better, it doesn't even feel like one of Josh's books. But I'm still enjoying it so far

message 1560: by Alyosha (new)

Alyosha | 35 comments Yep, it's much more Laura than Josh. And I did enjoy it, the first few pages made me roll my eyes though, especially "Gabriel felt the pound of it in his chest, his heart picking up the rhythm. They were playing his song all right, and the name of that tune was danger." Very amusing.

Andy Slayde | 220 comments Heather C wrote: "Andy, if it makes you feel any better, it doesn't even feel like one of Josh's books. But I'm still enjoying it so far"

This is very true. So much in there that Josh would never, ever write. I did not find Antonio to be a believable character.

And as Alyosha gave an example - a lot of the text is eye roll worthy.

I did enjoy the shootout in the alley.

message 1562: by Alyosha (new)

Alyosha | 35 comments At times it felt like reading one of the old, cheap pulps. But even then, I did find MH worth the money and entertaining.

I can see what you mean HC, it was my second Josh Lanyon book, (I read Fair Game first), thinking back this book had a different feel to other JL, but there were a lot of things about Ortega's faithfulness and endurance that reminisces of Josh's men to me.

Sounds pretty good, I'll have to check that one out.

Reading [book:Tatterdemalion
at the moment. I'm enjoying it immensely, fantastic setting. It was highly recommended to me by B and Niky, so I'm glad it's living up to expectations.

I agree Lil' Grogan...I've thinking about Mexican Heat today and something about Ortega just sounds so much like a character JL would write...

message 1571: by Alyosha (new)

Alyosha | 35 comments Oh no, I love pulp as a genre, it might not be the highest form of literature, but it can be very entertaining.

And like I've said, I did enjoy MH. But if you've read a lot by both authors, I think it's pretty clear who wrote most of it. I could be wrong, that's just the feeling I got.

Lauraadriana, I'm liking Tatterdemalion better and better ;) You ought to read it if you like beauty/beast- theme, futuristic, dystopia-like paranormal novels.

Bubbles Hunty Honest & Direct Opinions (vapidbubbles) Aly glad you are liking it, the blurb for the sequel sounds even better, IMO Trammel

Bubbles Hunty Honest & Direct Opinions (vapidbubbles) oh uh play some DA2 to hold you over

message 1575: by Alyosha (new)

Alyosha | 35 comments mmm, I will. I'm just so close to beating it already ;( Oh well, I can always play Oblivion after I'm finished with it. For the hundredth time lol

message 1576: by Bubbles Hunty (new)

Bubbles Hunty Honest & Direct Opinions (vapidbubbles) but there are two other classes and two other history settings i think you can play through DA2 like six times and have it be a little dif each time. I am a couple hours into my second playthrough

message 1577: by Alyosha (new)

Alyosha | 35 comments I know I know. I will :D And I loved it that you could use your DA1 things too. Like in Mass Effect, which is one of my all time favorite sci-fi game series.

message 1578: by Bubbles Hunty (new)

Bubbles Hunty Honest & Direct Opinions (vapidbubbles) I had erased my DA1 saved settings and was sad about that

message 1579: by Heather C (new)

Heather C (heathercook) In Mexican Heat: the beach house scenes feel more like Josh's writing with the descriptions of the surrounding and the smells and scents...

Alyosha | 35 comments gaaah!! Bubbles whyyyyyyy???? I would have been devastated. No, I don't take gaming too seriously lol

I'm sorry to hear that B :( You have my sympathy *hugs*

Heather, of course there was Josh's voice too to be heard. :)

message 1581: by Bubbles Hunty (new)

Mary (mary-soto) | 37 comments Just finished reading Kate Sherwood's Trifecta-I really enjoyed it. Now I'm reading Tamara Allen's Downtime.

message 1584: by Bubbles Hunty (new)

Bubbles Hunty Honest & Direct Opinions (vapidbubbles) Trifecta sounds interesting for sure but i dont like open relationships and even if they settle down to an exclusive m/m/m in the end the book is just not for me

message 1585: by Mary (new)

Mary (mary-soto) | 37 comments Truly I'm not a great fan of them either or even menage or polyamorous romance but I don't know what it is about Kate's novels-I think it's how she writes her characters that I love so much. :)

Glad you are liking this. These characters are great. The book is so funny, but not slap stick (at least IMO).

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ (manutwo) | 1768 comments Just finished The Elegant Corpse, I loved it. A.M. Riley is very close to become an auto-buy.

I'm reading Faith & Fidelity and enjoying it, for now.

JPerceval | 154 comments Bella wrote: "So any1 reading any M/F right now?"

I actually read mostly M/F, with a smattering of M/M *g*. Most of what Heather C already mentioned, but I can't stand the Black Dagger boys (*ducking rocks being thrown in my direction*).

I just finished Silver Borne (Mercedes Thompson, #5) by Patricia Briggs and How to Woo a Reluctant Lady (Hellions of Halstead Hall, #3) by Sabrina Jeffries , both of which were quite good. In M/M, I'm reading Death of a Pirate King (Adrien English Mystery, #4) by Josh Lanyon (not like anyone here has heard of that one...!). Pretty sure I'll be picking Changes (The Dresden Files, #12) by Jim Butcher as my next read, b/c I adore Harry Dresden. Will pick a romance too, but not sure which one.

I love Harry, too! Changes was a great title for that one, because it was a real game changer for the series. The ending. Oh. My. God. I've been dying for the next book, and now they've put it off until July. Bastards.

I have a bad habit of reading the last page of any book I pick up first, so yes, AUGH!!!!!! The title of the next book intrigues the heck of out me.

Heather, you have GOT to read the rest of the series!

I'm still pissed at Sci-Fi for cancelling the TV series. Paul Blackthorne is who I picture when I read Harry.

It's the third in a series -- the first two are

The Truth About Lord Stoneville (Hellions of Halstead Hall, #1) by Sabrina Jeffries and A Hellion in Her Bed (Hellions of Halstead Hall, #2) by Sabrina Jeffries . Though they stand alone OK, they really should be read in order since they deal with an inheritance issue and the mystery of the parents' deaths.

Jeffries is one of my keeper authors for historical romance -- great romances expertly woven into the fabric of history.
