Of course! This would be for the whole Goodreads gang. Anyone who feels like participating -- and no pressure if you don't.

A book a month should be doable.
No ideas at the moment, though there is plenty on my to read list ...

I love this idea! And, um, The Darkling Thrush is on my to-read list, so if anyone feels like starting with that . . .

Well, that's a lovely thought, but I was sort of thinking maybe this would be a reading/discussion that I could be part of it too? ;-D

Like a group activity so I can play too!

As for TDT or any of my stories, sure! Anytime. We can schedule or not schedule -- I can add a file or you can add a file.

No experience necessary for this, Minne! We'll just all read and chat and see if we agree and hopefully have fun where we don't.

So I'm looking through a bunch of books that I bought at some point but never read...

Jade Falconer - Savior
The Desire for Dearborne - VB Kildaire
Finding Zach - Rowan Speedwell

I don't have any idea about them -- I'm not even sure at this point why I bought them.

Do any of these sound like they'd be fun to try?

I vote for Savior to start with. A spoiled celebrity/bodyguard story sounds like fun. Plus it's cheap on Kindle!

YOU CAN NEVER BE MY FRIEND AGAIN.

:-D Of course this is just for fun and totally voluntary. I mean, it may end up just a couple of us read or maybe just me and you all have to listen to me drone on about the book.

Okay, I made a community poll so people can vote anonymously and by Monday we should know what we're reading. This one is sort of a rush job just to get our feet wet.

Next month we'll do this properly with more time and more selections.

Yvonne (ysareader) Finding Zach looks like more of a story. I'm not sure about Savior. The reviews are that it's very short & the author tends to fill up pages with lots of sex scenes. If that wins, not sure what there would be to say about it.

If it wins, and that turns out to be the case, we'll spend lots of time kvetching about how short it was and how there were too many 'filler' sex scenes. ;)

I already voted for Savior , but Finding Zach does look good. I'll be happy with whatever the group decides.

I honestly am fine with any of them. I'd just like to get some kind of regular reading/discussion going for my own sake. I've found not reading has been one of the things I miss most about my current schedule. When I do read it's for research or analysis and that's really not at all the same thing.

Frankly, sometimes there isn't a lot to say about a book -- and that's okay too.

message 1327: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne (ysareader) I'm willing to read any of them too as the point was to try out something new. I haven't read a celebrity one or what looks like a historical before in this genre.

How these two men would rebuild their relationship. Show that both are capable of loving and sexual relationships.

I was reading something about that (not the book, your comment on the book). For the reader, the story of interest--the primary story--is always the story taking part in present time. So no matter how interesting the past story is or the flashbacks, if the present times story isn't equally gripping, the reader feels disappointed.

How funny. I just finished Drew's story last night as well. I was disappointed that the focus was mostly all on the past relationship as well. And didn't care for the ease in which they seemed to get back together. Other than a quick catch up, there wasn't really any meaningful dialog to get them to a point where they could be more than old friends meeting again after 10-12 years.

Interesting. And it was disappointing. There were other issues with the story but I really was hoping it would deal with the present. It had an opportunity to address 2 tabooish subjects. I fear I won't find a story that will meet my expectations. I might as well just throw in the towel now.

Yes! 13 years of baggage solved in the time it takes to fix a lift. It had potential, just failed to deliver.

message 1337: by Lora (new)

Lora | 58 comments I voted for Savior. I'm afraid of the whole tearjerker thing with Finding Zach. Wishing on a Blue Star has me covered for tearjerkers for a few months, I think.

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ (manutwo) | 1768 comments I am very angst-sensitive and Finding Zach didn't stress my angst-o-meter much. It's very emotional, but I found that the attitude of the protagonists is what makes a book emotionally difficult to read and all things considered I think Zach had a positive attitude. I can't elaborate further without spoiling it too much.

I don't know what any of them are about. I just grabbed three titles I'd never heard of from the stockpile of stuff I keep buying but never reading.
;-)

I think I accidentally voted for Savior when I was putting the poll together, and since I had no preference, I let it stand. If it's short, all the better since we're starting this late in the month.

In fact, we should technically be also putting together choices for the following month's read. I don't want to get too far beyond that because I find it dull when the whole year is plotted out (I get enough of that with my writing schedule).

Andy Slayde | 220 comments Josh wrote: "In fact, we should technically be also putting together choices for the following month's read."

Are we just doing unknown authors? How do we base the unknown? Or any interesting title? And where should we compile this list of suggestions?

I'm with you; plotting the year would make it seem more like a class reading list than something more fun and spontaneous. And with so many new books being released all the time, we might want to go with an upcoming release, much anticipated everyone is looking forward to reading (like GhosTV).

Would you want to solicit requests for reads (like Lori does for the M/M romance group) or pull selected offerings from your bookshelf, not more than 4 or 5? I would suggest something old(er), something newly released, and something from a new or 'featured' author.

I'm finding there are a lot of older stories out there I haven't heard much about. It also seems as though the nature, the tone of M/M romance has changed somewhat from 10 years (or more) ago.

message 1342: by Merith (new)

Merith | 361 comments Andy wrote: "Are we just doing unknown authors? How do we base the unknown? Or any interesting title? And where should we compile this list of suggestions? "

I would think that under the 'Book of the Month' heading, Josh will create the topic 'Book Suggestions for XXX' whichever month is upcoming.

Since we're just starting, I think some of these details will be hammered out as we go along. Maybe offer up a multiple selection to choose from - a story from an unknown (or little known author), a newer or just released story, and maybe an older story from at least 5 years ago? Maybe even something available only in print (though a lot has made its way to e-format, even much older stuff).

message 1343: by Andy (new)

Andy Slayde | 220 comments Merith wrote: "I would suggest something old(er), something newly released, and something from a new or 'featured' author"

I like that idea. I would also suggest that if one of the stories is from an author in this group, that permission is asked. They may not want their book discussed this way.

I'm totally open. I think it's fun to try an "unknown" every so often, but though these authors are unknowns to me, a lot of you had already read them, so...really "unknown" is probably not a realistic criteria.

I'll add a file as suggested in the Book of the Month section and we can just throw out ideas each month.

And yes I agree that if an author is a member here, we should probably ask before discussing their work. To be honest, I don't even know who's here if they don't comment. I know Nikki Kimberling and Jordan are because they chime in now and again. LB...who else? Of course Andy, Kari, Missy...okay. Yes, we do have a lot of authors, so yes. We'll give them a head's up if we're planning to do their book.

Have you read Drew's Something About Trevor? It was the first story I'd read of his (off CRVBOY), and I loved it. He's one author I will always support, regardless of how much I may or may not like the 'current' story. But then, there are other authors I do that with today. Drew is special in that I want him to succeed after he gave me so many hours of wonderful reading pleasure.

Some of the stuff he wrote for CRVBOY was clunky, new writer kind of clunky. But 'Trevor' and another of his Surface Tension were good, solid stories. It is interesting that most of his stories are set in England, but Trapped Nerves and Rough Road to Happiness are set in the states. It's a little odd when an author jumps locations like that. Understandable when the character moves from one locale to another, but barring historicals, it's not usual.

That's how I felt about jumping into fantasy. Talk about a change of locale! No wonder some readers' heads were spinning. ;-)
