Well... if you put it like that... maybe being aloner wouldn't be that big of a problem... *g*

It left me feeling a little wanting, but I guess that's the point: This trilogy was a brief moment in a story that reaches back thousands of years, and will probably continue on for thousands more.
An epic, star-spanning science fiction that basically boils down to this: Two men from different worlds, enemies at first, who become brothers. A love story, in a sense--but not romantic love.

I just bought Pride of Chanur and Downbelow Station from Audible.com. Both narrators sounded promising. There are 22 Cherry books in Audio format on there.

It's set during the English civil war, a time of great political and social upheaval, which might make it sound worthy but dull although it is the opposite what with the turmoil in the lives of the two main characters. It's been a long time since I've been quite so grabbed by a book, by the hair it felt like. Towards the end last night it seemed like the author had hold of my heart and was trampling all over it but in an almost good way. She doesn't put a foot wrong historically either.

Chris tells me he thinks he'll have the files to me this weekend, so then it will take me a day or so to sit down and listen to all seven hours of it and make notes and then Chris will do his edits, and then I'll approve them, and then...ACX will hopefully get them into the sales channel before too long.
Short answer...hopefully by this time next month?
In fact, next month should be a pretty good month for audio as Kevin just contacted me for pronuniciation on All She Wrote, which means he's going to have that recorded in a week or so.
And Strange Fortune's files are supposed to be finished by March 1 too. So...yes, lots of audio books in the channel. I hadn't quite planned so many to hit at the exact same time, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

There's been a huge, huge boom in authors deciding to put their books into audio. ACX had more submissions in 2012 than in all their previous years put together, and December was insane. It took a full month to get my completed files approved (previously it had only taken 2 weeks).
The audio idea has caught fire.

Faded Sun was written by CJ Cherryh. Not in ebook form yet or audio that I could find. :(

haha, yep, that sounds like As Meat Loves Salt at the end. She does totally trample the heart. Sad, but also sadly appropriate ending.

Aaah... like I could have resisted reading the end of your message. ;) I'm really looking forward reading As Meat Loves Salt! So nice to hear that you liked it, Caroline! Reading it sounds like a penetrating, dramatic experience... ;)
You might not want to post it to me just yet though, because I'm leaving after a few days and I won't be back home until on 15th March. If the parcel doesn't post as a "letter" the post office won't keep it longer than two weeks (and after that they'll send it back to you). Wait a week or so before you'll post it, okay? And thank you in advance, Caroline. :)
So, who is interested in reading it after me? Whereto do I get to post it? (Why in the world is this so exciting?!)

Me, maybe. If you don't mind sending it to Canada. I imagine that might be too expensive.

Fantastic. Whenever you're done with it give me a shout. No rush. I have a wip in progress and an extensive TBR list (BRB is at the top of that.) :)
In the meantime if someone a little closer to Johanna would like to read it first. No problem.

Great! on all three counts. Thank you for letting me know.

Oh, wow!
I don't think I could enjoy audio versions of her books--not the first time I read the book, anyway. I do a lot of flipping to figure out alien terminology and remember who's who. Though, it would be interesting to listen to an audio version of Faded Sun now that I'm done. That would probably take me a year to listen through, though, at the rate I'm going with audiobooks. ;)

Well I tried. Hopefully I did manage to avoid any plot spoilers. Have a great holiday. I'll hang on to the book 'til you're back. We do have Aleks to thank for starting this off - a chain book instead of chain letter.
Yep Jordan - sad but totally appropriate. There's a fantastic song by Billy Bragg - The World turned upside down - which could provide a soundtrack for parts of the novel. It would make a superb film as well. If you have any other recommendations of similar books I'd be most interested.

Can I use LOL and wow in the same sentence - even though it's not really a sentence at all? ;)
What a title and what a blurb. Couldn't help but to add it into my to-read list. Thanks, Susinok!

I was introduced to Billy Bragg by the SO who early in our relationship sent me a copy of the song California Stars. It became "our" song.
Well, one of them. We're both a little musically obsessed.

Amazing isn't it. But I have to admit by the time the end rolled around I was ready. It's wrapped up very well.

You could send it to Norway, perhaps?

I was also surprised that you know Billy Bragg - he seems so quintessentially English. I went to listen to California Stars and I'm impressed that you made the leap to his more usual stuff - I'd never have recognised him in California Stars.
Do you know his song "New England" sung by Kirsty MacColl? - the lyrics are good! (And that led me on to her "There's a Guy Works Down the Chipshop Swears He's Elvis" - more fun lyrics.)

Do you want to read it before me? I don't mind.

That’s so kind of you, Mr Lanyon, thank you. So bragging rights eh.
Well I’m currently doing the last checks to the print copy. I’ve also been rounding up the various poets who offered to say nice things about the book
With a deep regard for precision of language and lucidity of voice, these powerful poems honour the memory of the Malta Convoys in WWII - the ships and the men who served in them. Davies writes with great compassion and empathy, but not an ounce of sentimentality. Carefully researched, beautifully written, she has crafted a compelling and moving collection. ...
This is a fantastically ambitious (I mean this word in the best sense!) book, and a great concept for a poetry collection. I like the semi-experimental feel of it, … You get a great sense of the people....
It’s the people, the men that the poems are about who are the important ones especially as what the merchant seamen went through is a largely forgotten aspect of WW2. Now I just have to trust that I’ve done justice to them. The book will be published in May by Cinnamon Press although anyone who wants to can already pre-order it. It’s even on Good Reads

I don't mind who reads it first either, but perhaps it should be sent to the one nearest first, so it doesn't have to cross the ocean many times?

I really enjoyed that book. I didn't notice the ranch style. I thought they were in converted warehouse spaces. Gin was. Don't remember Kane's house. There are some ranch-ish houses in South San Francisco and south of there. Not in SF itself that I remember.

I liked this one a lot too :)
And I'm missing reading: I had laser surgery for my eyes, and I still need to read very little and then let the eyes rest.
Thank god for the audio files! :)
