Welllll, I don't think realistic police procedure is much of a priority in manga. Certainly not what I'm ever looking for. ;-)
I have great affection for those three in particular. I'm not saying they were flawless by any means! But I still did really enjoy them.

I'm reading her Faded Sun trilogy right now. Just finishing it, in fact. It's interesting, because while her MCs are both male, the society they live in is a strong matriarchy.
She builds really rich worlds. LOVE her work. She has this knack of making her aliens seem alien while still making them...human. People you can empathize with.

I met her a few times. She lived in Lawton, OK, for a while and would come to our science fiction club meetings now and then. She was a lovely person and so interesting to talk to.

I met her brother, too. He went to the same high school as I did and graduated several years before I did. David Cherry (no H) did a lot of fantasy art back in the 80s. He did a lot of work for Dragon Magazine, the role-playing game magazine.

I miss Dragon. They stopped publishing it around the time I started reading it. :P
A family friend of my roommie told me the story about how the H ended up in Cherryh's name. Something along the lines of: Her agent/editor/publisher said, "'Cherry' is just not...sci-fi enough, so let's add this silent H."
And you know, Cherryh does seem so much more...mysterious and interesting and exotic.
Anyway, that's the story that I heard. :)

My love of manga inspired me to learn enough Japanese to read all those written sound effects and since I watch anime in Japanese with subtitles, I picked up a fair amount of spoken Japanese too. I actually had to speak quite a bit of Japanese when I stopped off in Tokyo for four days so it came in very handy.

Ah, you talk about Junjou Romantica, though, right? I watched both seasons and like them, too! What I meant here, though, was Junjou, the manga by Fujiyama Hyouta. It's really great!

I think there is a very natural crossover there. Which is why I think certain Japanese publishers are thinking that crossover might work the other way too.

Have you ever read Rin by Satoru Kannagi and illustrated by Yukine Honami? She also illustrated Desire which is one of my favorites. I have that one in both English and Japanese

I can't even buy BRB right now, if I'd wanted to. Or, anything for that matter. I went to their "help" section on the website, and got an error message there too. *sigh* WTF?
As for what I'm reading next, well, I'm still currently reading Andrea Speed's book, then I promised to read Veterans, and after that, perhaps something of Josh's. I'm very tempted to read BRB, but I've been meaning to read Fair Game for awhile too, so I'm not sure which one it will be.

Does anybody have any Smashwords search tips? I knew what I wanted and got Blood Red Butterfly right away, but what if your are just browsing?One nice thing is that the site is FAST to navigate and it's easy to buy. Just not that great for browsing a particular category like m/m unless I'm missing something.
I think you just have to be aware of what you're looking for after linking to the 'Gay & Lesbian' tag. Make sure the adult filter is off. I tend to keep the site bookmarked for easier searching.

On a different note: I've had War and Peace (Tolstoi) looming in my book shelf for a while now. I don't think I can escape much longer... has anyone here read it and can tell me whether I'm going to potentially waste my time? I know a lot of people are raving about it, but I've had mixed experiences with so-called 'classics'. (Sometimes I have this suspicion that if you write long enough sentences with the most confusing, nonsensical plots the labels 'classic' and 'intellectual' are automatically pinned on your books, because no one has ever read enough of it to actually know what it is that you've written.)So, to read or not to read? I'd be really happy if someone could advise me one way or another here... :)

I felt like this for a long time and then I decided I lived well for 50 years without having read it, I can go on like this. But I've liked Anna Karenina, which is also much shorter ;-).

Well... I haven't read 'Recherche', but I've read 'un amour de Swann' and let's just say, it wasn't my cup of tea. Very... flowery. Over the top flowery. To be honest, I didn't really understand what all the fuss was about. So, it will be some time until I will try Proust again, I think :)

I'm a big fan of 19th century British novels like 'Jane Eyre'. That book really had me captivated from the very first page!

I used to feel a great deal of guilt for not finishing War and Peace, but I've come to the conclusion that I can't read EVERYTHING. I mean, I think I got the gist with War and Peace. ;-P
I recommend Woody Allen's Love and Death after you finish W&P. :-)

Woody Allen's perspective is usually hilarious, so I have high expectations :)

I've never completely finished War and Peace either. I tried reading it though, but that was a long time ago. That's why I found the bit where Steven (Satan) Krass is (view spoiler) in Somebody Killed His Editor hilarious (23%):

I had the same problem. They have SO many books there and I wanted to find a few new ones, without searching through textbooks and The Great American Novel. If you click on the Gay and Lesbian category, there is a subcategory for EITHER Gay or Lesbian, so that can narrow it down a bit more. Then I spent some time clicking on one of the search categories above this: Best Selling, Newest, Highest Rated, Length, etc. Doing each of these subcategories finally got me to some workable lists that at least had some books on it I had heard of. And I perused from there.
Another thing I just found recently at Smashwords. You can tag authors as a "Favorite Author" and that can lead to easier searches by going to My Smashwords and proceeding from there. Also, they have a Wishlist feature, but it's more like you add a book to your Library. When you then click on your Library, you will see unpurchased books at the top of the page and your purchased books at the bottom. A bit strange, but it works okay if you know that adding a book to your Library doesn't actually buy it.
