Blaine (blainedarden) I read Breathe by Sloan Parker today and absolutely loved it, I just couldn't put it down.
Over the past few days I've also read Grand Jeté by Diana Copland , Holiday Outing by Astrid Amara , Shift Happens by Storm Grant , Concubine by Jill Knowles , and, of course, Don't Look Back by Josh Lanyon .

Ranging from simple lovely romantic stories to dangerous trekking through the rainforest to submission and amnesia. I enjoyed all of them :). I have to admit I normally don't go for were type stories, but Shift Happens was definitely worth the read. :)

Next to my bed Gravedigger (Dave Brandstetter, Book 6) by Joseph Hansen is waiting for me to continue and on my ereader I just opened St. Nacho's (St. Nacho's, #1) by Z.A. Maxfield .
Still plenty left to read :)

Glad you enjoyed it, Leah. That was one where I wrote the sequel because readers wanted it so much. I thought the story was there (or nothing on earth would have budged me) but I was surprised at the interest in a follow up.

When Wicked first came out it moved very slowly, but it's performed steadily ever since.

She's as prolific a writer as you are, Josh. Harper's settings and plots are also as varied. I think my next big trip will be back to Great Britain for a "Harper Fox's tour of Great Britain." I'll get from one end of the island to the other. Maybe I can convince Jan to join me. ;-)

Yes! I was actually there at the end of last June. The weather was gorgeous, however, very unlike her winter setting. But the fact that we saw the city in sun and warmth actually helped engrave it into my memory so I could visualize everything cold, gray, and windy.

The settings of her other books- as well as the characters- are hugely memorable. I can't recommend them enough. Very powerful.

Heather:

Marie Sexton has a story about Matt and Jared called Putting Out Fires coming out Valentines Day (2/14). The Promise was a real tear-jerker in all the right ways!! When Jared asked Matt what he thought about getting married and Matt was like "no way" - yikes! I was screaming at him. I love the fact that Matt is so introvertedly emotional. I love Matt and Jared second only to Adrien/Jake - and A/J are still way ahead!

Happy reading~!
Leah

It's funny, they aren't what I would call an apples-to-apples comparison. Yes, they both have the Alpha cop who denied his "true self" and the bookish, "beautiful" protags in Jared/Adrien, but for me Matt/Jared had this amazing friendship in the beginning that I don't think either one wanted to screw with, but Adrien/Jake had the instant electrical attraction while working kind of relationship. Both couples had their, what I would refer to as physically repelling moments - meaning both of the Alpha's were very physical at one point in pushing their love interest away, hurting them in the process.

Wow, now that I think of it, these two couples have some wierd similarities going on. Nah! I think it's just the formula that works! [am I talking to myself?]

Time to go!

message 1031: by Heather C (new)

Heather C (heathercook) Leah. I think I read the Coda series and the immediately read AE so I was making many comparisons. But with AE there is mystery and romance and with Coda it's pretty much all romance. So I can't compare the series. But I can compare the couples. Plus, with J&M we do get to seeing them living their HEA. But with A&J, their HEA has been left for our imagination. Well, as of right now it has... ;)

Bubbles Hunty Honest & Direct Opinions (vapidbubbles) On Fire had a fireman and a twink. Once i got the skimming through the sex down it went really quick. Nothing ever happened it was just the slutty pink haired twink meets the sexy fireman when the fireman is doing a charity car wash so he is all wet in his tight, black fireman's uniform and the twink accidentally bumps into him they have sex every-time they meet wherever they are and blah blah. Some how the twink can cum like 12 times in an hour and almost always creamed in his panties before they even did anything.

Bubbles Hunty Honest & Direct Opinions (vapidbubbles) I am now reading Wrestling with Desire by D.H. Starr which is a YA book and they can't have penetration so should be nice reading something that is not all sex

Also starting Regularly Scheduled Life (Ohio Books, #1) by K.A. Mitchell in a few hours but hear that was is mostly sex and angst so should be a joy to read

Ha! I've read many, many books like this. Personally, I like lots of sex/intimacy in my M/M books, but it has to consist of a readable plot that keeps my interest as well. In Josh's writing book Man Oh Man, he discusses the fact (with great wit I might add) the fact that gay men, and men in general, are thinking about sex every 60 seconds - lots and lots of sex. So it doesn't surprise me if an M/M relationship consist of lots of sheet-crumpling activities, especially in the beginning of the relationship. But having the sex, and nothing else, is more like an instruction manual.

I think the best book I have read yet that consisted of very little actual sex, but TONS of intimacy and "tender moments" was Warrior's Cross; just a perfect mix of angst, sexual tension, intimacy/sex, and the characterization and plot pacing are so spot on it's scary. Also, this is one of the very rare books that had me in tears, as well as laughing out loud.

This is why ereaders are soooo good. :) No one can see what you're reading unless you show them. Though, it usually has to be in the middle of a sex scene when someone asks "Is that a Kindle? Can I see it?" (I have a Sony Reader, but EVERYONE asks if it's a Kindle). I even keep a couple of innocuous books just so I could show other features of the reader without showing all the M/M stories.

message 1037: by Merith (new)

Merith | 361 comments Bella wrote: "Honestly hate this kind of books; such a waste of time and money :-S "

I agree. There are a handful of authors who write interesting sex scenes - scenes that have meaning - Jake and Adrien's last scene comes to mind. Unless the story's purpose is for sex, it's such a waste to put so much trash in there. I tend to skip or skim through a lot of the sex in stories any more - most all read the same. *sigh*

/soapbox

Yes, that sounds familiar, about having an m/m book on screen when someone asks about the ereader ...
Depending on who asks I normally warn that the genre might not be their cup of tea, but the last time someone asked was in church after choir practice and I thought zapping away from the book I was reading would attract more attention than just keeping my mouth shut ... He made no comment, but I kept hoping he either couldn't read English (which in my country is about a 50/50 chance) or didn't read too closely. ;)

The question I'm mostly asked is whether you can read comfortably on an ereader. They rarely ask the make/brand. Then again, kindle isn't quite as hot here, since they don't sell many books in our Dutch language at amazon ...

I've never read any of her stuff, but now I'm going to have to check it out! lol, if only I had an unlimited budget for books, then I'd be all set. Perhaps that will go in the pile I'm planning on buying if I win NaNoEdMo next month.

Lora | 58 comments I just finished Wishing on a Blue Star. I picked it up free from Dreamspinner not knowing what I was about to read. It is an anthology of blog posts from Patric Michael while he is battling Lymphoma and short stories and poetry from other authors. Very moving and a completely engrossing read. It's also a major tear-jerker so don't read it right before getting pictures taken.

Ohter than this, I have been working my way through the Temperance Brennan series by Kathy Reichs.

@Bubbles--On Fire 2 is more of the same but there is also a bit more story in between the sex scenes.

I forgot to mention, if you like historical romance, you might want to check out The Phoenix by Ruth Sims. It's a "Victorian saga" about a doctor and an actor. There is a lot of sex, but you'd never know it because she writes it so well, and it's a lot of door shutting. BUT, you don't even notice the door shutting at all. I HIGHLY recommend it.

I reread it for the second time about a month ago and when I finished it I had that "Post-book" depression thing for about a day and a half. I just didn't know what to do with myself because the book was over. I couldn't read anything else, I didn't want to watch tv. I just wanted more of Kit and Nick.

"the Phoenix is a multi-layered historical novel that illuminates poverty and child abuse, theatre history in America and England, betrayal, a crisis of conscience, violence and vengeance, and the treatment of insanity at a time when such treatment was in its infant stage. Most of all it is a tale of love on many levels, from carnal to devoted friendship to sacrifice." -the back of the book.

Yup. Highly recommend it. Just be prepared for all those emotions. It's a roller coaster for sure.

J. Rosemary Moss (jrosemarymoss) | 71 comments I'm partway through C.J. Sansom's Matthew Shardlake Mysteries. They're set in England during Henry VIII's reign, and feature historical characters like Thomas Cromwell.

I'm loving these so far. Matthew Shardlake is a London lawyer who begins as an ardent Reformer but starts going through a crisis of faith as he sees that Cromwell is just as corrupt (and spilling just as much blood) as the Catholics in power before him.

Matthew solves murders with a loyal but uncouth rogue named Jack Barak, a patralineal descendant of converso Jews. Jack isn't much religious, but he has a sentimental (and potentially dangerous) attachment to his Jewish heritage.

(I adore Jack. This is a gen series, so his relationship with Matthew is--at most--bromantic. But don't let that stop you from reading this series! Oh, and Jack doesn't come in till the second book, but the first one is worth reading anyway.)

I love mysteries, history and religious issues, so these books are perfect for me. Overall, I think Sansom does a brilliant job of bringing the Tudor period to life. The mysteries themselves are so-so, but since I love the characters and setting, I'm ok with that.

Dissolution by C.J. Sansom Dark Fire by C.J. Sansom Sovereign by C.J. Sansom Revelation (Matthew Shardlake Mysteries) by C.J. Sansom Heartstone A Matthew Shardlake Tudor Mystery by C.J. Sansom

Thanks--I hope you enjoy them!

The only problem with the first book, Dissolution , is that Jack Barak isn't in it yet. But Matthew has another young assistant named Mark. And Mark is a sweet, likable fellow--he just pales in comparison to Jack!
