I just checked Amazon USA- Kindle $3.99!

I think it is so inexpensive because it includes excerpts from the multi-voice audio edition. They are hoping for up-sales. http://www.amazon.com/American-Gods-A...

O-kay. I bought the American Gods too. Thank you for the recommendation everyone. And thank you, Anne, for reminding us of Simple Gifts — you have recommended this one to me earlier this year and I'd forgotten all about it. I'm definitely going to read it during the Holidays. :)

And of course you can't forget The Thin Man. Although -- sacrilege, I know -- the movie is better. The SO and I watch the movie every Christmas Eve when we get back from my parents.

One of my favorite movies. There's definitely more humor in the movie than in the book with Powell and Loye working off each other so well.

When I have time, my own favorite book series to read at this time of the year is The Dark Is Rising Sequence , by Susan Cooper.

The monsters are scarey - the idea of something that you're not able to see or do anything about is just terrifying. However, I really liked the characters and the story, so it was well worth reading, as is the rest of the series.

message 10424: by Lady*M (new)

Lady*M | 197 comments I love Lehane's writing, but I couldn't read Mystic River. The movie was bad enough (bad for the same reason you couldn't rate the book, KZ, though both acting and directing were superb), but knowing how good his writing is - I didn't even attempt to read it.

So my aunt just told me about this non-fiction tome about how kids grow up to be, or are born, different from their parents. Examples are kids born deaf to hearing parents or gay/transgender kids born to straight parents. It's called Far from the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity.

It's a tome, and pricy, but I glanced through it and it looks like it would be a good read for anyone interested in the topic and for parents/families who have kids that aren't like them.

I just bought it and will give it a try. It'll likely take me ten years to read it though, so I can't promise a review right after Christmas. We'll see how it goes.

You probably did, Pender. But I give Lehane a whole lot of credit for being able to write such an absorbing story while making his characters so odious. I'll definitely be reading more of his work. He's a remarkable writer.

Had damadged kindle replaced and Christmas is a good excuse for a little indulgence ;)

I like mysteries but Josh's are the only real m/m ones I seem to have read.
Or maybe some of those non racist/phobic Sheriffs? ;)

Currently re-reading 'The Administration' series and the 'Shadow of the Templer' books, but craving something new (new to me).

Or maybe Amor En Retrogrado, Death by Misfortune or The Elegant Corpse by A.M. Riley.

Have you read the Psycop series by JCP? They are paranormal mysteries and the first book starts off with:

Once upon a time if you told doctors you heard voices, they'd diagnose you as schizophrenic, put you on heavy drugs, and lock you away in a cozy state institution to keep you from hurting yourself or others.

Nowadays they test you first to see if you're psychic.

Excellent books. I love them.

ED | 105 comments A few days back I got "Men Under Mistletoe" and "His for the Holidays", in audio format. A great collection of stories. I only did not like the narrator from the first Mistletoe story. I struggled listening to him. The others were all very good though. I had many hours of great entertainment to listen to the stories. And thank you for everyone who recommended the Regularly Scheduled Life for me when I was asking about K.A. Mitchell books. I finished it last night and I actually liked it a lot. It was very difficult to put down. And as for the sex in the book: (view spoiler)

Reggie Just finished First You Fall. I really enjoyed it. I'm hesitant to recommend it because of the humor. Humor is so subjective, so be careful. The book is a mixture of cliche and very insightful pithy comments. This mix kept it entertaining and fresh.

The writing craft is a little inconsistent within the story, but I didn't mind. It was very entertaining. I enjoyed the mystery too. ;-p
