I just read Luke Hartwell's Jimmy, a very short story, also with a gay-straight friendship (like Atom Heart John Beloved), but this time the guys are in their late-30s. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for new work from Hartwell.

Same here.
I liked Atom heart more, but both were interesting and different reads.

Anna I'm glad they could help you, I'm so used to use the kindle or the kindle app on my computer, I had no ideas. :)

I just heard that she mentions Adrien English in one of her books. I haven't read her work though. Maybe someday I'll get around to it. I've just got too much on my TBR pile right now.

My two favorites are Life After Joe and Scrap Metal. Life After Joe is shorter -- my favorite mm short of all time -- and Scrap Metal is more of a true novel length. Both are very very much worth reading.

If you can bear to add to your TBR, I do recommend Rhys Ford's two mysteries. They're very good!

As I said, it's really difficult to choose between Harper Fox's books to identify a favourite, and I can't. As I read each synopsis I think "Oh yes, that one was so good!" - and then I realise I'm doing that for all of them. What is great is that they are all different.

I loved A Midwinter Prince. And The Salisbury Key and Driftwood stay in my mind too. I agree with Plainbrownwrapper and feel that Half Moon Chambers is evocative of Nine Lights Over Edinburgh.

Thank goodness she is so prolific!

I think Harper is one of those writers you just either love or you DNF. I (obviously) love her, but I can see that she wouldn't be a favorite with everyone in our little community when you consider what a wide spectrum of tastes and preferences there is here.

Happily enough readers love her to keep her writing.

K.Z. Snow (kzsnow) | 1606 comments I'm currently giving a book by Melissa Marr a try. She's a highly regarded YA author, so when I saw she'd published a supernatural tale for adults, I was on it. The blurb made Graveminder sound right up my alley.

Unfortunately, Ms. Marr had to stuff a romance into the story. It's already making me cranky. When I read outside the romance genre, I want to be outside the romance genre. It's kind of like a vacation for me. :)

I'm in a desperate need of good audiobooks. Any more recommendations? Anyone? What enjoyable audiobooks have you all listened lately? Any m/m?

I downloaded a poetry audiobook She Walks in Beauty: A Woman's Journey Through Poems today (my first audiobook with poems in it) and I find it quite soothing to listen to. :)

That's so strange! After you posted this, I tried it myself, just to see if there's a difference between our countries. So I went over to audible.com, found Men Under the Mistletoe, put it in the shopping cart. And then, after logging in to go to check out, it vanished from my cart. I typed it in the search and imagin my surprise when they told me they couldn't find such book. Very strange. Searching for Josh's name they only show me The Darkling Thrush. It's the same on audible.de. They only know one book...

Yeah, I know! In fact the very reason I joined Audible.com in the first place was the fact that I thought I could buy Men Under the Mistletoe (and Fair Game if I remember correctly). And right after I signed in the same thing that you just described happened to me too — those books disappeared. I'm a fan of mystery, but not this kind... ;)

Calathea | 6034 comments Johanna wrote: " I'm a fan of mystery, but not this kind... ;) "

Absolutely.

To answer your question regarding good audio books: I listen to Kevin Hearn's Hammered atm. It's part three of the Iron Druid Chronicles. It's a bit similar to Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden but imho not nearly as good. And still, as an audio book, I keep listening. The narrator is excellent and there are a lot of fun ideas in the book. I'm sure I would have dnf-ed the first book had I read it but as an audio book it's something else.

Thank you for the recommendation, Calathea! I haven't read the Iron Druid Chronicles, but I've listened books #1 and #2 of The Dresden Files. I liked those — they didn't exactly make me blindly fall in love with the series, but listening James Marsters' voice is a big bonus. ;)

You're still only at the beginning! Believe me, it still gets better. Or he gets better. I tried audio books years ago and thought it meh but after listening The Dresden Files I kind of fell in love with this experience. It's so different from reading or watching a film. Maybe you need more patience because you can't rush through? I know we've had a topic here about what to do while listening to audio books. It took me a while but now I can do it without needing to occupy my hands (I'm doing nothing additional while reading, after all) and find it very relaxing. :)

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1052 comments I so strongly associate Jim Dale with the Harry Potter books that I haven't been able to listen to him read anything else. Which is probably not a great thing for him career-wise, but he really does an excellent job with Harry & Co.

Grover Gardner is a great narrator for the Vorkosigan series by Lois McMaster Bujold. Lorelei King is such a good narrator that she's made even some of the more recent Stephanie Plum books bearable. (Although I finally gave up that series a couple books back.)

And these are non-fiction, which I know isn't every fiction reader's cup of tea, but Bill Bryson does a phenomenal job reading his own books. (In my experience, most authors are very, very bad at reading their own audiobooks.) A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail and I'm a Stranger Here Myself: Notes on Returning to America After 20 Years Away are my two favorites.

I loved to listen to Diana Gabaldon narrating Outlander. It also was such a long book (about 33 hours) that I still associate some of the gardening tasks with her voice although I finished the book a couple of years ago. ;)

Plainbrownwrapper | 201 comments I'm a huge audio addict. I will strongly second the recommmendations here for James Marsters doing the Dresden books, as well as Grover Gardner doing the Vorkosigan series. Both are great, and enhanced further by their narrators. :-)

As for listening -- I used to listen on my cassette and then CD Walkmen, then various Palm devices, then iPod Touch, and now iPhone. I don't use the Audible app any more, though -- I use a different one that's available in the app store.
