PM me your email address and I'll send you the mobi versions of the DC, Liade.

Aleksandr Voinov (vashtan) Liade - I don't think you do. Just click on the "request to join" button, I'll approve you.

I know, and after this I will definitely check out her writing. And as I said, it isn't fair to let something like that be a judge either, but there are so many books and many writers out there....

I haven't either, but after reading Gold Digger, I have thought it is about time I did, so maybe I should head over to that place too.

message 9256: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov (vashtan) Anne - Absolutely! Sometimes you get so overloaded that every excuse works to narrow down the field. Though in JS's case, that would hit the wrong author. She's on the literary side of things (which not everybody likes), but I love her style/voice.

I'm new to it too, started reading the other night and now it's eating huge chunks of my time!
I'm reading it on my phone - there's an Adobe app for Android, and as long as I turn the phone so I'm reading in landscape the font is fine (for me anyway)

Thanks for the note -- I'm a big fan of good prose!

Aleksandr Voinov (vashtan) Plainbrownwrapper - Me too! So I cherish the authors who can deliver it.

Anne | 6816 comments Aleksandr wrote: "Plainbrownwrapper - Me too! So I cherish the authors who can deliver it."

Me three, It is always such a relief to read authors that you don't fear will let you down with bad writing that kicks you out of the story.

I have just started Johanna, nice to know about the group read, most people I know are way ahead of me. Thank you for sharing.

Liade, Anne, Sarah and Manda! It would be lovely to do the Special Forces group reading together. :) I assume that we are going to need all the peer support we can get while reading (I cheated a little and read the first two chapters today). I'm planning to give it a try anyway — the people in the group seem like a merry bunch. ;)

Sarah (pointycat) | 134 comments I think I'm a little over a third of the way through - so hard to stop reading it!
And I seem to have joined the group a while back, handy :)

Really not a good book to read before bed, not unless you mind losing a few hours then wincing when you see the time!

Oooh! Where did you find it? Every time I look it's insanely expensive.

Plainbrownwrapper | 201 comments Becky wrote: "Oooh! Where did you find it? Every time I look it's insanely expensive."

I got my copy used off of Amazon. I think it was $25 total, if I'm remembering correctly. No more than that, anyway.

Antonella | 11565 comments Becky wrote: "Every time I look it's insanely expensive. "

But it used to be insanely cheap (and insanely small written)!
Maybe we are talking about a different edition?

message 9271: by Lora (new)

Lora | 58 comments Same edition. 1200 insanely small type pages. DH just bought himself a Harley, so $115 for a "like new" used book didn't seem quite as painful. I've wanted it for a really long time.

I was just thinking - hope Lora has either very good eyesight or strong glasses, because I found it so hard to read (physically) that I never got very far.

message 9273: by Lora (new)

Lora | 58 comments Oh, it was through Amazon.

message 9274: by Lora (new)

Lora | 58 comments Magnifying glasses ARE cheap. LOL! Trying to find all the individual books would have made me nuts.

message 9275: by Becky (new)

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1052 comments If the print is really small I might be better off getting the individual books. Plus, I bet the collection is a brick, and my wrists really don't like that. Hmmm.

It gave me a bit of a giggle that most of the books listed as Customers Also Bought on the Brandstetter page were Josh's.

message 9276: by Plainbrownwrapper (new)

Plainbrownwrapper | 201 comments Dang, I can't believe the price is so high now. I need to start treating my copy better -- it's just been banging around the house. I checked the price, and when I bought it last December it was $31.19 including shipping!

Wow, that's dedication to m/m!

I bought mine in October 2009, and it was very cheap then.

message 9278: by Lora (new)

Lora | 58 comments I haven't actually recieved my copy, so I can't testify as to how tiny the print really is--I do have decent vision for reading (at least so far) and I figure I will be able to manage it.

I figure the price isn't really all that bad when you figure it is 12 books (shh! I am trying to justify this!) and that is only about $10 a book. Besides, the price keeps going up on it, so chances are, if I want to resell it at a later date, I can recoup some of the purchase price. And I have saved (please, keep the snickering to a minimum) tons of money by reading ebooks for the past 4 years.

Heck, I can't even keep a straight face trying to justify it.

message 9279: by Antonella (new)

Antonella | 11565 comments Hi, Lora!

You really don't have to justify anything here!

As Charlie Cochrane nicely said in her welcoming speech to the UK GLBT Meet in Brighton: ''It's great to be here, in a place where we don't have to explain/justify ourselves for what we write and what we read'' (more or less, I didn't record it ;-).

Liade | 397 comments Aleksandr wrote: "Liade - check in the group. I know people have conversions. :)"

OK, I seem to be a member of this group now. But at first glance there's no indication whatsoever where to look for these converted files. Do I have to ask/search for answers in threads with intimidating four figure numbers of posts?

Hey, I don't want to appear overly grumpy, but it seems to me that information like that could easily be made available on the group's front page.

I bought my Complete Brandstetter second-hand on Amazon three years ago for what I now realise was an absolute bargain price! Couldn't believe the prices when I checked just now.

I have that copy as well - but with the minuscule font you definitely have to add the price of the top quality glasses necessary to read it!

Aleksandr Voinov (vashtan) Thank you, Lenore! Much appreciated! :)

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ (manutwo) | 1768 comments I'm finishing Maurice, liking it and enjoying a bit the historical period, it forces dynamics that are a bit different, because the social class comes into play in the mind of the characters. Let's see how the last 15% will play out.

Slightly different: where else are you reading?
Well, I entered Amazon.it yesterday and they were selling the Kindle Paperwhite. I've been coveting it since when it appeared in the US, so I made myself an early Christmas present. Delivery from November 22nd on :D

message 9294: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov (vashtan) Ohhhh. I'm torn between a Kindle Touch and a Kindle Fire (HD). If I could find any way to sell the idea to my guy (who correctly reminds me every day I already have an iPad and my Kindle Keyboard is perfectly fine) ...

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ (manutwo) | 1768 comments The Kindle Fire is too much like a tablet, I think, so I'd buy something else first, but also my eyes work better with black and white. I'm very curious about this new Paperwhite screen, because it is lighted but it shouldn't strain the eyes. I've been very happy in that regard with my Kindle 2nd generation, but I can't read in the dark :)

I'm not going to abandon my first Kindle because the new one doesn't have text-to-speech, which is a great feature when I have migraines.

message 9296: by Lenore (new)

Lenore (xlenorex) | 10 comments No prob, Aleks.

And my Kindle keyboard is perfectly fine as well but I couldn't resist the Paperwhite's awesomeness. Already pre-ordered it! Roll on October 25!

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ (manutwo) | 1768 comments Do you think they heard our protests, Lenore? And why do you get it a month before me??!! :D

:) They sure as hell heard my cries of frustration!
And I'm not sure why I'm getting it sooner.

message 9299: by HJ (last edited Oct 12, 2012 01:43AM) (new)

HJ | 3603 comments I am strugging to resist the lure of the Paperwhite, because I simply don't need it. My old Kindle keyboard is absolutely fine. But the Paperwhite is so shiny and pretty! (Even if/or maybe because I do think of the early-flowering narcissus every time I see the name...) I'm using the fact that I couldn't play audiobooks on it to help fight the temptation.

I read that Amazon sell the Paperwhite at cost because they make their money out of the fact that Kindle owners read four times as many books than they did before owning one, while continuing to buy print books too. Interesting - I wonder why? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-...

message 9300: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov (vashtan) Okay, I wasn't aware that they do the Paperwhite in the UK, too. Damn, that's a shiny piece of tech. I think I'll get one (not that the guy would notice) for Xmas. :)
